Boss Has Idea Who Will Get New Deals
Thursday, 11th Apr 2013 06:00

Manager Mick McCarthy says he has an idea which of his out-of-contract senior players he wants to keep at the club beyond the end of the season, but is still to talk to any of them regarding new deals.

Lee Martin, Andy Drury, Arran Lee-Barrett and recent signing Jason Brown all have terms which are up in June, while Daryl Murphy, Guirane N’Daw, Richard Stearman, Jay Tabb, Reece Brown, Aaron Mclean and Patrick Kisnorbo are all on loan until the end of the season. David McGoldrick is still at the club despite his 93-day loan being up and is set to sign a two-year deal in the summer.

McCarthy says he has plans in mind: “I’ve got a good idea of who I want to keep and what I want to do, but they’ve also got an idea of what they want to do, and not playing in League One is one of them.

“So, there’s a bit of motivation for them all to pull their finger out — make sure they’re negotiating as Championship players.”

Those negotiations have not yet begun with McCarthy keen to have Town’s survival confirmed before doing so: “I’m not talking to them now.”

The Blues boss has already told youngsters Ronan Murray, Jack Ainsley, Joe Whight, Cormac Burke and Gunnar Thorsteinsson — who is set to sign a two-year deal with Hermann Hreidarsson’s ÍBV in Iceland — that they will not be kept on when their current deals are up in the summer.

McCarthy hopes they’ll ultimately prove him wrong, but warns that he doesn’t recall making too many serious errors of that type: “I’ve not released many that have gone on to embarrass me completely, but I hope they do. I don’t release players who I think are good enough for the team, that’s for sure.

“At their ages and at their time of development, they’ve got to go and play for somebody, whoever it might be.

“Me signing them and sending them out on loan is not right either. You don’t develop as a loan player, you’ve got to go and play somewhere that’s your club, your shirt, where points are played for. Not U21 football, I’m not a fan of the U21 league personally.

“They’ve got to go and play for someone. I’m not bothered where it is, go and play professionally, or even semi-professionally, at any level and have a career at it and play 300 or 400 games and then you’ve been a footballer. That’s my view on it.”

Meanwhile, McCarthy was back at his old club Millwall on Tuesday night to watch the Lions take on Sheffield Wednesday, who the Blues face at Hillsborough a week on Saturday.

Must try and sign Stearman, McGoldrick and Tabb. Martin can leave, we are a better side without him. Offers so little.

Goven the loan comment. I'd say Carson may not be playing for us again?

McGoldrick & Stearman are the most important to have sign. After that Murphy (on reasonable wages) is well worth keeping despite what some people think and personally I'd be happy to have Tabb & N'Daw stay on too as they both offer qualities that are very much needed in certain games at Championship level. Their wages will be important on that front too, bearing in mind the recent financial report we were reading about. Which brings me to Martin; I have a bit of time for him and on his day is as good as any winger in the league and is hard working, unfortunately his final product is just not good enough most of the time. As he is on one of the problem Keane era contracts, he is unlikely to be offered anything like his current wages, if at all & will try his luck elsewhere. I will wish him well. ALB, the Browns & Kisnorbo are always going to be subs as best and so are not crucial in these negotiations.

I highly disagree with that Lee Martin when form is doing is one of the best we have, he never stops from the minute he gets on, I think Murphy is one of the laziest players we have but good at what he does, I believe we could find the same type of player for less money(wage) signing up a creative midfielder is something that is needed to take place first in my personal opinion

Bye bye Lee Martin. Massive waste of finance on him. Poor player.

McGoldrick and Stearman are the top two in my eyes; I'd not be sorry for Drury and Martin to be replaced: not for any other reason than our midfield has gone stale, we need Hyam to be part of a fresh dynamic midfield with Edwards mentoring them
and being the senior player; mate a decent loan signing to add depth. For this reason I am not fussed if we don't try and sign N'Daw regardless of his situations off the pitch. ALB is at the point he really deserves a club and I think that the Championship isn't the place for him as hard working as he is. Tabb I want to see more from but he might be hard to obtain now Readong are returning to the championship. I would love to see a serious attempt to try and sign Luke Murphy from
crew who was fantastic at Wembley on Sunday though I suspect plenty of other clubs will be bidding for him in the window.

The problem being half of the first team could leave at the end of the season.
MM will have to find 6 players just to replace those that leave.

We should just be adding to the squard to push in to the play off not another summer re build.

Martin and Drury could be replaced by Taylor and Wordsworth but would like us to sign Tabb and N'Daw.
Stearman is a must and would like to see Murphy here next year as he is versitile. Will need another keeper as number one or back up as ALB looks to be on his way.

Delighted to see Stearman doing so well especially after the over reaction of the doom mongers when very ORRdinary left.

Murphy and Stearman for sure.

Stearman & Tabb must be priority signings. Martin & Drury can go. I would not sign Darrell Murphy either as there are plenty of good players in the lower divisions who would walk to PR to play for us. Our midfield needs bolstering and two good wingers would not go amiss!

Yes to:
Stearman
N'Daw
Tabb
McGoldrick

I think we can find superior alternatives to the rest, although Kisnorbo and Brown haven't had enough time to impress. I trust Mick to bring in players with ability and most importantly the right attitude. Look at his signings so far.

I'm not actually convinced we do need a huge influx of players, I suspect a deal for N'Daw maybe already close. Stearman will be tough, probably wanting good money, and rightbacks don't usually get big money. Tabb as said above will be harder now Reading are coming down, but I do wonder if he fits with Adkins style, and at his age will he be able to cope with e way Adkins likes to play, its no coincidence that Adkins MF at Saints was average age 22! McGoldrick is done, don't think we have to worry about that. Nouble, MClean can go, we have Talyor coming back, wordy too. Lee Martin is an odd one as one his day he can tear up the Championship, but we already have JET who is equally erratic and with the large wages Martin is on, think the cash could be better spent, even Carson could do just as good of a job as Martin with a consistent run. Summer is going to be very interesting.

if the wages are right we should sign up martin and drury murphy mcgoldrick stearman tabb and even kisnorbo as cover.
If the season started when mick took over we would be in the promotion shake up so this squad must be ok.
we need to see an end of wholesale changes if we want to be successful this squad can do well next season and i dont want it broken up.
with taylor and wordsworth coming back and are solid defence we will have enough without bringing in any new blood.I really hope martin stays and would like to see him given a go centre mid

I would have hoped for Mick to already have an idea, this means he hasn't planned ahead for how he will get the club up the table and we are heading for more of the same down at the bottom next season.

What is the deal with Taylor ? Not sure if he will be around either ? potentially

The midfield is what worries me. N'Daw steadies the ship and is strong, but not always the most creative. The same goes for Drury. Martin is fast and works hard, but his final ball is consistently poor. Edwards is a great skipper and is still fast, but surely he must be beginning to feel his age. Tabb seems promising, Wordsworth too, but not one of them is the incisive creative midfield general we need. Hyam could be that, but he's not there yet, so it seems to me we need to get a really classy creative midfielder in to provide guile and decent service to the strikers.

IN:
McGoldrick
Stearman (pay whatever Wolves want)
N'Daw (if not in prison)
Murphy
Tabb
Drury (handy to have as cover)

Out:
Martin (on huge wages and hasn't done anything for us in 4 years)
Mclean (hasn't done much on loan)
Brown (haven't seen him play, may be good back up)

Martin seems to shine at end of seasons.. did so last... This wont get him a contract

a lot of people are mentioning keeping players as back up and giving outs a chance- the way of financials in football now it's hard to keep the wage bill down as well as having squad players; our youth really should be the squad players with strong first team regulars utilising the emergency loan system for cover if bad things happen: I just can't see Drury being worthy back up

Ippy4awife. I have to agree, Mick's days in charge are numbered. I've heard a rumour that Lee Martin will take over as player manager during the summer!
Do you remember a stricker we had in the late 70's , Robin (somebody) can't remember his surname?
