Edwards's Strike Up With Cresswell's
Monday, 29th Apr 2013 06:00

Manager Mick McCarthy says skipper Carlos Edwards’s strike to set the Blues on their way to Saturday’s 3-1 home victory over Birmingham was up there with Aaron Cresswell’s Town Goal of the Season in the recent 3-0 win against Crystal Palace.

McCarthy said: “It was a really good strike. It might have put a bit of pressure on Cressy because he was home and hosed as soon as he put that in the net.

“I think they were a little bit disappointed because it became a non-competition. It was non-competitive after that, he’d won it hands down.”

The Blues boss has a lot of time for Edwards, who he says plays nothing like his 34 years: “He certainly does not. Whatever he’s eating I’ll take it. I want some of it! He’s an amazing athlete and he’s played well as well.

“He always gives you athleticism, but he’s got better. I think he plays more cultured, a bit more considered.

“He’s started getting goals, he’s got to chip in with goals. You can’t be depending on centre-forwards all the time, your wide players have got to contribute, your midfield players, and he’s started to do that. He’s a lovely guy, he’s a lovely, lovely man. He’s great.”

Mr Lee Martin take note! This is the sort of performance we expect from wide creative midfielders

Ely Blue :- I can't see Martin giving any sort of performance for much longer.

Edwards has become the player he should be. Being played at rightback continuously did nothing for his confidence.

I can't get to matches at all so don't see the Town very often and couldn't understand why all you guys used to slate him when he was playing right back because the only times i saw him he looked really good. I am pleased that he is now being played in his best position and people are saying nice things about him because he has always struck me as being a real 'Town type' player. Keep it up Carlos and show the youngsters how to do it!

Can't see Martin being here next year as I see Tabb taking over

Martin gave us a typical performance for his ten minutes on the pitch - lost the ball , missed his tackles and got booked ! Hopefully his farewell appearance !

Yes Martin can go as far as i'm concerned, on sat he had only been on the pitch about 10 mins when he didn't bother to track back for their goal, Tabb had done the tracking back to help Cressy all of the previous 80 mins and that was soon after giving away a free kick on the edge of our box for a needless shirt pull.

billblue - if you had watched Carlos playing at right back all of the time, you would understand why fans were moaning about him. Despite all the praise from MM for him, Carlos has not played well in a lot of games this season. His passing has been awful, his positioning has been poor and when we were attacking and needed to pass out to the right, where was he? Having said all that, in the games where he did turn up, he put in a captains performance!

I really like martin from time to time. He always puts 100% in but maybe sometimes the lad doesn't perform, only fear is I can see us letting him go and him being a top performer for someone else

True Jack.Very impressive in the loan period he had at Charlton.I liked him in the role behind the front man but our personnel has since changed and with Tabb, jet,Wordsworth and Taylor all able to play wide he does look surplus to requirements. He cuts a frustrated figure now.

Jack - We have better players than Martin - He has not really delivered for us - yes he runs alot but he gets far too many yellow cards and his end product , assists , crosses , goals is poor - Thanks but dont let the door hit you on the way out
Division One Player - go join Wolves

Having been scored after the 2012/13 Goal of the Season was announced, will Carlos's goal be considered for next season's award? Or is it the Goal of the First 44 Games Award?

Edwards' late goal at Derby was really sweet, too. Good run, correct decision, strong, accurate shot and grabbed us all three points!

Next season we will not want to go into games with a ' red card waiting ' on the pitch so Martin needs to be released . Tabb has produced more in his loan period than Martin over the whole of his time with us . With Wordsworth and Taylor also in line we have a very productive and lively midfield building .Next season will give Big Mick some lovely selection problems and with the new faces he is already working on will be up for some exciting times .

Goal v Brum was a beautiful luxury, but the one against Derby was critical. Nice one, skipper.
