Town Confirm Skuse Deal
Tuesday, 14th May 2013 10:34

Town have confirmed that former Bristol City skipper Cole Skuse has agreed to join the Blues on a three-year contract on July 1st. The 27-year-old midfielder’s terms with his hometown club are up at the end of June.

Free agent Skuse, whose proposed move to the Blues has been rumoured for some months, told the club site: “I loved my time at Bristol, they gave me a chance in the game and I’ll always be grateful for that.

“It’s the right time for me to move on though. I need a fresh challenge and when I knew Ipswich wanted me, I didn’t have to think too hard about the decision.

“I had a few options but with Mick McCarthy and Terry Connor in charge at Ipswich, that shows the intent of the club to move forward and I can’t wait to get going.”

Robins managing director Jon Lansdown is disappointed to see Skuse depart: “Cole has been a credit to the club since he joined at the age of 10 and has progressed through the system to play more than 300 games for the first team.

“It’s a shame that we have reached a point where it is time for him to move on, but I wish him all the best with his future career.

“Our aim now is to produce more homegrown players like Cole going forward.”

Skuse, who has also played in defence, spent 17 years with his hometown club. Having come through their youth system, he made his senior debut in the 2004/05 season.

The Robins' Player of the Year in 2009/10, Skuse made a total of 245 starts and 62 sub appearances while at Ashton Gate, scoring nine goals.

The 6ft 1in tall midfielder is likely to be the one of several Bosman additions this summer with an increasingly large number of players out of contract each summer and with the Blues unlikely to want to spend too much on fees.

Signing any Captain playing in the Championship for free has got to be a good thing, no matter where they come from. A good leader in the middle to help Hyam along. Excellent stuff.

With this guy watch Hyam get forward more next season. Mick has previously hinted that he wants more going forward from Hyam and this signing gives Luke the chance to go forward in the team. I reackon 10 goals for Luke next year might be his target.

Also great to get some business done early. In Mick we trust!

Just out of interest, does anyone know how binding this kind of agreement is? Not questioning it but curious how it works if his contract is not up til July. I remember "gentleman's" agreements years ago with Hassan Kachloul and was it Ian Crook of Norwich later not being honoured by the player.

“I had a few options but with Mick McCarthy and Terry Connor in charge at Ipswich, that shows the intent of the club to move forward and I can't wait to get going.”

I'm not the first to pickup on this quote and I won't be the last.

Why are we spending zero pounds on signing players when loans are the way forward! Its a damn disgrace CLEGG OUT!

Pendejo: a heavy hint of irony there methinks?? Lol. I thought the way forward was to take a player who desperately wanted to stay and pay up his contract to leave on a free. I get this horrible feeling sometimes that MM and TC coming in was a nice dream and I'll wake up back in October 2012.

A good solid and sensible signing made with no fuss or long term speculation. Just love the way the Club is doing its business since the Clegg/Jewell regime and looking forward to perhaps 4 or five more coming in through the door.

What a player, with this in his locker we can't go wrong

@WhoisJimmyJuan - I imagine the contract is actually signed, just doesn't come into effect until 1st July (when his old one runs out). After all, in the last half season of a contract the player is free to talk to other clubs.

steve m. where from the story do u get that he hasn't seen the training facilities? strange comment to make with no evidence. still never mind. as for you francis b. u clearly either not a town fan or you just out to cause a stir or ur just ignorant. why on earth do you think hes an awful signing. that's what I love about some of our so called fans. the guy hasn't even arrived yet and already hes being slagged off. why cant you just welcome him to our club and see how he plays before making such ridiculous comments

@blues1 I think you will find the training facilities comment was a joke at stereotypical new signing comments who normally say "I joined because this is a great club with top training facilities...."

Good bit of height to add to the squad too.

“I had a few options but with Mick McCarthy and Terry Connor in charge at Ipswich, that shows the intent of the club to move forward and I can't wait to get going.” that's so nice to hear rather than the usual "is a great club with great facilities but I decided to go elsewhere" Let's add this to the ever growing list of reasons to why mMMick and Tez are the best!

Sound start! Seems like the kind of reliable player we need at ITFC. Welcome Cole! If possible, I'd like a bit of flair over the summer too. Not sure that MM does flair, however. Still, In MM I trust. With 2-3 more key players, we could be looking a lot stronger by August. COYB!

Excellent and welcome to ITFC. A great player and one who sees the club as ambitious which is testament to the influence having our management team have.

On another note I'm chuffed that this is being dealt with at the start of the summer. We have already sorted out who is going and now we are building at the START not in August, what a novel way of doing things.

As a super blue who has lived in Bristol for 28 years But retained my Portman Road season ticket through the thick and thin (mostly the thin recently) I can confirm he will be the perfect addition to the club. An intelligent player who has a virtual 100% success rate when passing the ball. He is McCarthy's perfect player and I see his signing as the first brick in the wall of our promotion season. No one will be disappointed at this addition.......COYB

Great start by MM and TC and allays some of my fears about player choices in that he can actually play (i.e. won't play hoof ball). Better still this hopefully lays to rest any fears that the woeful Carl Henry might be coming or N'Daw might be staying. Crap footballers both. Now let's get Forester, Judge, Mclean, Boyce and Stearman and we can all look forward to pre-season......

No more exscuse's to sign players early then, well in MM & Top Cat :-)

.... we can't really go wrong with this signing - age, credentials etc; all fit the bill reasonably well - a TIMELY permanent signing too, which let's everyone know MM's intentions early doors.

No doubt - we ARE now moving in the right direction. BRING IT ON.
COYB.

blues1 - hardly a strange comment. A town signing is never complete without some obligatory quote from the player about the training facilities. Surely you can't have missed this with previous signings. It's the in joke. The interviewer with a very limited range of questions.
