Cresswell Knows Nothing of Reported Interest
Monday, 12th Aug 2013 09:28

Left-back Aaron Cresswell says he knows nothing about any interest in him from elsewhere with a number of clubs having been linked with moves for him over the summer. The 23-year-old, who returned from a thigh injury at the weekend, insists he’s happy at Portman Road.

Long-time admirers Aston Villa were claimed to be ready to make a move earlier in the summer, before adding Spaniard Antonio Luna to their squad, while Southampton, Fulham, Crystal Palace and Championship Wigan have also been mentioned in connection with the Liverpudlian.

Former Tranmere man Cresswell - who Mick McCarthy says is the best left-back in the Championship - says the reports were news to him: “I have not heard a thing about a move. I love playing here and there is no reason why I can’t stay here for the next two years.

“I have had a great first two years and am happy to be starting my third. Time flies when you are having fun — and I’m having fun.

“My career ambition is to play at the highest level and if I can do that, then I will be very happy.

“I would love for Ipswich to reach the Premier League, then my ambition to play there would be fulfilled.”

One left-back position which could potentially become vacant is back in his home city with Everton’s Leighton Baines continuing to be linked with a reunion with David Moyes at Manchester United.

Would he fancy a move to Goodison Park? “I don’t know about that. I’m a Liverpool fan. I would have to cross that bridge if it comes.”

Not surprised that he is getting attention from other clubs. I just hope that we can hold on to him for as long as possible. Would love to see him tied to a lengthier contract - but with 2 years on his current deal then I'm sure Mick has already thought about doing something regarding Cressy's contract situation within the next 8-12 months.

bit worried how he quotes ' and there is no reason why I can't stay here for the next two years.' Why not longer if a contract exstension offered? I know it may not of as yet but normally players would throw in that they would be happy to stay for X amount of time and longer if a new deal offered.

thats great if he's happy to be here for the next 2 years, however we do not want to let his contract run down and lose him for nothing, offer him something now!

He is a quality player ,however I remember very well when his confidence was down previously he struggled which is understandable. He is a big fish here , loved and admired which clearly helps confidence. Going to a big prem club ,manager never speaks to you , as a good or better players around you etc etc etc might not be for him.

I just wish TWTD, MM and everyone else at the club would just shut up about link rumours to Cresswell and not give them the impetus that oxygen provides.

Speculation... about one of our players?! Almost forgotten what that's like. Nothing serious seems to be on the table anyway, so sign him up for another 5 years!

Of course there will be speculation about players of his quality. Have to accept that if we don't make the Premier League, then he'll be gone eventually, and whilst that would be disappointing, just make sure we get a big fat fee. If Tommy Smith keeps playing the way he has been over the last few months, there'll soon be speculation about him too.

If Mick can get us to the Premier League soon, I see no reason why Cresswell couldn't be here for the next 5-10 years. He's so good, that given such circumstances, he could write himself into the club history books as a legend.

If we don't get promoted I fear this will be his last season.

It would be no disgrace to lose him.

By the far the best LB in the league.
Wouldn't surprise me to see him leave next season if we don't get promoted, but i'd love him to stay for longer.
Sounds very loyal to the clubs and under mick clearly is enjoying his time which is good news.

To be honest i think that in two years time he does need to be playing in the premiership, one way or another. He'll be 25 then and just coming in to his prime, makes sense that he would want to be playing at the highest level he can. If we either get promoted this year or at least have a good season and come close then I expect he will be happy to stay around, if not then i think we would do well to cash in on what would probably be a substantial transfer fee and allow him to move on.

While the much-maligned Mr Jewell did seem to dig himself into a rut, I think we should thank him for actually bringing in one or two young players who might have quite a bright future.
