McCarthy Speculation Continues in Irish Press
Monday, 21st Oct 2013 10:15

Speculation regarding Mick McCarthy and the vacant Ireland manager’s job continues apace in the Irish press this morning.

The Irish Independent claims the FAI have set an annual budget of €1.2 million (just over £1 million) to fund the wages of Giovanni Trapattoni’s successor, with billionaire businessman Denis O’Brien again understood to be helping to finance the appointment.

However, it’s said that any compensation which would be payable to Town for McCarthy, or to another club should their boss be the man they want, would come from that figure.

How much Town would want for McCarthy, who is contracted until June 2015, is unknown but it’s claimed it would be somewhere between €500,000 and €1 million.

An Ireland player is also said to have been told that McCarthy is the frontrunner by an FAI official last week: "The impression from the conversation was clear — that Mick will get the job."

Meanwhile, the FAI’s headhunters, Ray Houghton and Ruud Dokter, are reportedly going through a short-list of candidates, which is believed to include the likes of Hector Cuper, Walter Zenga, Alex McLeish, Dick Advocaat and Carlos Quieroz, while it’s claimed two Premier League bosses have been contacted but are no longer being considered for the job.

Elsewhere, it’s reported that initial favourite Martin O’Neill will pull out of the race this week, having opted against taking the role which seemed his a month ago and that the FAI will make an approach to Town regarding McCarthy this week offering €500,000 in compensation.

I find it very sad to read so many comments about who's the next manager, what has Mick done to upset so many people. He loves playing with the press and I think his doing the same again seeing what reaction he would get. How many times on this site has it been said ITFC are in better shape now than in the last 10 year, some even go back to the Joe Royal days and that's a long time ago. Think some people should not wish for him to go because if he did no guarantees we'd end up with something better. I hope its only a few people wanting him to leave as he deserves better treatment after what he has achieved in the last 12 months. In Mick I 100% trust COYB's

......... "we are in better shape than we were at this time last season' - OF COURSE WE ARE - WE NEEDED TO BE, otherwise what did we pay mm £1million for ???

We now needed to push on - WE HAVEN'T, WE AREN'T, and we look incapable of doing so.

Your priceless mate. Does Mccarthy want the irish job or not is a very simple question.
All he has to say is yes or no and must of the posts that have gone before would all be irrelvant. Why do you think people are getting so up tight, its because he can't answer a simple question yes or no. Personally I couldn't give a toss either way, although if he stays I hope he changes his approach to games with a more of a positive attitude.

It may be simple question, but at this point it is just a hypothetical one. One which has not yet been asked by the people authorised to ask it. In what way is it in anybody's interest for MM to answer this 'simple' question at this stage? And why has MM's failure to respond in the way everyone wants suddenly resulted in this outpouring of anti MM hysteria questioning not only his integrity but also his managerial ability and tactical knowledge?

If he hasn't said 'No' then in my mind if he was offered it or even given an interview he would take it, I don't believe he would wait another 4 years or so until the next manager departs (might be longer) as he said he wanted to manage Ireland again. I believe the writings on the wall - that's if he is offered it of course...

I happen to agree with you. The way Football works these days deals are set up and agreed with a nod and a wink. However, I still think that there may be problems to overcome. Eg a) his basic remuneration package with FAI would be nothing like he could get as manager of a Premiership club, nothing like he could get with us if he got us promoted. B) the word is that FAI will have to pay a compensation package to secure his services; I would doubt that ME would release him cheaply. C) his terms of reference for the job would have to be agreed; MM knows all about the politics involved in the FAI and would want to be able to do the job his way.

It may already be a done deal but I would think that there may well be more mileage in this story.

Even if its only a hypothetical question what stops him answering it yes or no?
His integrity has come under question because by not answering the yes or no question he is showing no real commitment to our club. The reason people are questioning his managerial skills is his negative approach towards games like Shefffield Wednesday.Simples.

So he says, 'yes, I would like the job', where does that leave him in the eyes of the fans when he hasn't even been offered it? Where's the commitment I hear them scream. So he says 'no, I don't want it' (when we all know that he does), where does that leave him in the eyes of the fans if and when the offer comes. Where's the integrity I hear them scream. It's a case of 'damned if you does and damned if you doesn't'.

The sad thing is that now for a lot of people the only solution is for him to go, whether it be to Ireland or elsewhere. Consider this, who are the losers in all of this? Yes you've guessed it; it's us the supporters.

i agree, with both of your last posts Blue04.Suddenly Mick is deemed a villian a failure, ! Town has been in real need of stability for a long time,if Mick goes then who knows what or who will follow. If he does leave then its unfortunate ,but i dont like seeing a surge of fans wishing or driving him out.Now a few managers are floating about without jobs it seems they are ideal replacements UNBELIEVABLE .!
