Woody Not Out of Favour
Tuesday, 29th Oct 2013 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy says midfielder Anthony Wordsworth is still very much in his plans despite having missed out on a place on the first team bench in recent matches and also having been left out of the U21s side which drew 1-1 with Bristol City last week.

McCarthy, who bought the 24-year-old from Colchester for £100,000 in January, says Wordsworth has dropped out of the matchday squad to allow Jack Marriott to come into the 18.

“I’ve just put another striker on the bench, so somebody had to sit out for it,” he said. “I’ve got Tabby and Tunners and I’ve got midfield players on [the field].

“He played in the U21 game the week before, so we just gave him some extra work in terms of physical work. It’s worked well. He’s not out of favour for any reason, I just wanted to put somebody else on the bench.”

The Blues boss says Wordsworth, who has scored one goal in two starts and seven sub appearances for Town, two of the latter this season, was unlucky to miss out on last week’s U21 match: “I can only play three [outfield] overage players.

“Carlos didn’t play against Millwall [in the previous week’s U21 match] and nor did Tabby. Frank did, but Frank is the next in line to play.

“So, if you analyse that, the ones that really needed to play, needed to have 90 minutes, were Carlos, Tabby and Frank because he’s the first port of call.

“Murph’s had a bit of a groin problem, if he’s not playing, Frank’s my next shout. Woody isn’t really. He’s got to make himself that, hasn’t he? But he’s had a couple of double sessions and worked hard.”

This does not make a good read. I thought it was just Halloween but it appears Frank must have cast his spell over MM some time ago.

I thought Nouble did well when he came on against Bolton. Don't think we can say the same for the rest of his 1st team appearances this season but here's hoping he's turned a corner!

I prefer Buzzlight Year. Gives us more attacking options.

This is a weird one for me, woody is prob the one player in our squad who has a bit of creativity and flair, something we are crying out for, even mick himself has said we need more creativity at times esp in the final third to create chances for our strikers. For me he should start alongside skuse in midfield, coz skuse can do the same job as hyam, but better and that then gives woody license to do his thing. Plus what baffles me most is mick himself signed woody, so knew what he was getting. As for his obsession with nouble that is def beyond me esp the undeserved 2 yr contract extension, when he has done nothing in a town shirt to warrant it

Staggering as I've not seen anything in FN to suggest he has the makings of a threat to any of the more established players (anyone seen him head a ball?), yet the few times I've seen Buzz I wonder why he is not played more often.

Nouble is ex-wolves. MM is always gonna have a soft spot for him.
I would like to see Woody get some time. Could he be the new Owen Garvan??

So if he had put Woody on the bench would we be moaning that Marriott is not playing?

Nouble was a gamble by MM and TC which they said at the time. He has the potential to be a good strikers for us are the words they used.
Don't think he has a chance as the fans have written him off all ready, but if he not playing they can always slag off Hyam or Murphy

Arniemsbigtoe, I was going to say exactly the same thing but couldn't remember OG's name! Not terribly physical or quick, but very creative and excellent through balls splitting defences - or is that simply rose tinted...

in answer to David...his goal was a headed goal...and a reasonable one at that. Would like to see him given a good run in the team just so we can judge him properly. Hes still a bit unknown. Clearly he wants it badly having stayed training the whole of pre-season and he was good off the bench last season. Woth a risk for a few matches i think, not to mind we've all heard of his set piece and crossing exploits which ive seen for myself. But in Mick me trust, sounds like hes just giving woody an extra bit of motivation

Really like Woody,he has something different to everyone else - he has a good eye for a pass and is creative. Can't believe that he is not even on the bench at the moment. In my opinion he should be starting and given a try as I feel he can score and set up chances. He would get better and better if he had the opportunity. I have really liked the look of him.

Fully agree Jewels, Woody is the creative player we have been crying out for.

I can reemember feeeling so excited when we were going to sign Wordsworth then it was on/off, on/off then we actually signed him and I saw it as a dawning to a new future. Why, why, did you sign him MM if you don't want (or probably understand his potential) him?

MM was my preferred appointment and I would be the last to underestimate the progress we have made since he arrived. However his obvious favouritism towards certain players and by-rote management of the squad during matches mean alternative formations and game plans are not being tested. I don't think you can do this successfully on the training ground.

Berra is a class act but, if he plays, Chambers who is no full back surely has to drop out for Hewitt or a new signing. The lack of pace and invention in the middle third is alarming, and McGoldrick seems to have created most of his goals by sheer opportunism rather than by finishing off well-constructed moves. Wordsworth, or Taylor if and when he returns, should be given an extended chance to show what they can do. Similarly with Marriot, who may not be another Kevin Phillips or Jordan Rhodes, but who can tell when he's not getting a look in? I may be missing something but Frank Nouble, who admittedly gives 100% and has a great build for a front runner, has so far shown little evidence on the ground or in the air that he should be anywhere near a Championship squad. Surely the 10 or 11 other clubs who have looked at him can't all be wrong?

IMO it's unlikely that we will threaten the play-offs this year, and looking at Palace's recent experience, that's probably no bad thing except for ME's bank balance. Equally, there should be no relegation worries either, so what better time to be experimenting with the available resources in the hope of further improvement and a serious challenge next season?

Frank Nouble - 'a poor mans Carlton Cole' so my West Ham told me
Yep - so far I am afraid I have seen little to question that
Big , Honest endeavour but gets knocked off the ball surprisingly easily for a big man
Lets swap him for JET!!!

'Woody not out of favour' is like saying the sky is green - the facts are Wordsworth has not been given a proper chance in the team. Nearly all the fans sitting around me reckon he deserves the opportunities that have been given to Hyam (who lacks creativity).

The only thing I disagree with MM about is that he has not given Wordsworth the opportunity TO CREATE something. And he can head a goal too.

i think we need to go for an attacking 4-5-1 from now on:

Loach
Hewitt Chambers smith Cresswell
Hyam Skuse
Taylor Wordsworth Tunnicliffe
McGoldrick

much more exciting to watch and more goal threat, still got Hyam and skuse holding which they tend to do anyway.
why cant Mick see it.
i need to apply for the job i think.

Has it occurred to anyone that may be he isn't training very well and therefore MM is giving those that do the hard work off the pitch the game time?

Saying he isn't out of favour could MM's way of trying to offer reassurance that if he puts the effort in then he will be given the opportunities his talent suggests he deserves.

Just a thought.

I like Hyam but he can't keep churning out average performances. Not sure what Mick sees in him at the moment... A change is required in CM alongside Skuse, and it should be Tunnicliffe as many have said before. Wordsworth on the left.
