McGoldrick: Jack's Like a Young Michael Owen Tuesday, 5th Nov 2013 06:00 Top scorer David McGoldrick has drawn comparisons between Town teenager Jack Marriott and former Liverpool, Real Madrid, Newcastle, Manchester United and England striker Michael Owen.
“Jack is a goalscorer, a poacher,” McGoldrick said. “He’s like a young Michael Owen. When he has his back to goal he tries to do a 180-degree turn and shoot, even if he has a defender right behind him.
“He just wants to score goals, which is a great asset to have. I definitely think he has a future in the game. He is training with us every week and he’s a really polite boy.
“He is working hard and listening to what the other strikers say to him. I think he’ll have a good career if he keeps his head down.”
The 19-year-old, who scored both goals for the U21s in their 2-2 draw at Swansea yesterday, made his senior debut on the final day of last season, coming off the bench with half an hour left in Town’s 2-0 defeat at Burnley, but has yet to add a second appearance, despite having been amongst the subs on a number of occasions in recent weeks.
McGoldrick has declared himself satisfied with his own season so far but is adamant he can do even better.
The 25-year-old former Notts County, Southampton and Nottingham Forest frontman said: “Yes, it’s going alright. I’d like to score in every single game — that’s what every striker wants — but obviously it’s about working for the team when you’re not scoring.
“I’m doing that as well and as long as the gaffer keeps picking me I’ll be giving it my all, trying to score goals and working for the team.”
McGoldrick admits he is his own worst critic and added: “I believe in my ability and I expect a lot from myself. At Bolton last week the gaffer had to tell me to keep going because I was a bit peed off with myself that I hadn’t scored.
“In the end, though, I got the goal that earned us a deserved point and the gaffer came to me and said ‘I told you to keep going, to get your head out of your hands’. It was a vital message from him and it paid off.
“When you are self-critical, like I am, you can start feeling sorry for yourself when things are not going your way. I used to be a player who always wanted the ball, no matter if I was having a good or a bad game.
“The gaffer has said he believes in me and what he was saying with his message at half-time at the Reebok was to keep trying to make things happen. Luckily it did when the ball bounced for me.”
McGoldrick has six goals to his name and will now be attempting to reach double figures as quickly as he can.
He added: “It’s not a bad return but I could have scored more. I was told long ago that it was all about getting chances. It’s when you are not getting chances that you have to start worrying. But I’m getting them and I’m putting some of them away.
“Six is a decent tally but I’ve got to keep going because I want to score loads more. Obviously, though, I want the team to win so that’s always the main thing. Hopefully I can make a contribution on both fronts.
“For any striker double figures means success and the sooner the better. Another four will get me there and hopefully they will arrive as soon as possible.”

Be honest if he really was the second Lionel Messi at 5ft 8 tall and not built like a brick sh*te house Jack still wouldn't fit in with MM style of play and not be given a chance.

Hang on a minute, i've actually read a couple of positive comments on a TWTD article at last - most are still negative as usual, but i wouldn't expect anything else.

i hate what has happened to football.back when bobby robson was here marriot would have all ready played and if he was scoring would have been a first team regular.the club keeps saying we are investing in youth when they wont let their investment play. we can all reel off the great players this club gave a chance at an young age,we really need to get over this fear.i heard from a guy who knows a guy that marriot does not miss!i believe we are ready to see him,as my opinion of our strikers are, murphy is not going to be a prolific scorer for us,taylor looks more of a provider, and mcgoldrick cant do it on his own and if nouble really does have anything to offer he needs a run of games so we can see what has got properly.also the same with hewitt. the only reason chambers should be at right back is if mings hewitt and edwards were all injured.we have three good center backs but i think smith and chambers needs to be the pairing.one is going to have to hit the bench.if we are going to do this it needs to happen now, beacase as we all know any team who can come out looking good after december/january is going to be in the mix at the end.

Unbelievably some of you actually think McGoldrick is saying Marriott is the next Michael Owen! That is not what he is saying!! He is saying he has a similar style of play.

whittonite - Luke Hyam is one of our own, MM more than PJ or RK is putting his faith in that particular youngster, Tommy Smith too - MM has been a hugely positive influence on him. What do you want to see? Our youth team put our every week regardless of whether they are good enough??? Marriott will get his chance under MM, there is no doubt about that. Some of you lot just use any old gripe to moan about our manager.

I can understand the bitterness towards nouble because he has only scored what? 2 goals for us? But you have to understand that he is 21 years of age and is still learning the game as is jack marriott and I would see a loan spell for jack helping a lot because nouble does have more experience than him and I feel that jack would only do as good as nouble at this moment in time.

You can rely on MM choosing Jack but only after every other option has failed to produce goals. If we were playing "Burley style" football and not "MM hoofball" he'd have been given a chance before now.

michael11 & Bluelady - ........ who's pinning all there hopes on Jack Marriott ? - no one to my knowledge, BUT the sensible people can see the possibility of a repeat of the 'Rhodes' scenario happening here. And let's face it - the lad should be given run outs HERE and NOT elsewhere. Nothing at all to be lost in giving him 20 minutes or so when we need a Goal i.e. against Barnsley only last week. I've said before, a natural goalscorer will score goals at whatever level - I predicted that with Rhodes, he has done that - and I had many people (now eating humble pie, or should be) saying he hadn't proved himself etc, etc; JACK SHOULD BE GIVEN A CHANCE HERE - AND NOW. But not full games, just yet. Give the kid a chance, he deserves it.
blueboy1981 added 18:18 - Nov 5
....... for those who choose not to remember - or are still wet behind the ears - ITFC of old would be giving this lad an opportunity now , Sir Bobby was one of the best as we all know and he would never be afraid of blooding a youngster - progressively that is. And that's all we are asking.

i want to see him in a blue shirt playing for us asap, experience can only help. But, Mick obviously sees more of him day in day out than anyone. If Mick feels he's ready, he'll put him in the team. Marriott just needs to keep playing for the U21's and scoring goals and eventually he'll force Mick to give him the chance. Also, he is pushing for that place on the bench and so he must be improving so i dont see what need there is for him to go out on loan, having TC coaching him im sure will be doing him wonders. IN MICK WE TRUST, if i need to remind anyone.
blueboy1981 added 18:57 - Nov 5
...... don't be too hard on Nouble people - he is still young and 'learning his trade' - anyone who knows a player and been involved in the game will know he has potential. What he needs is good coaching, and should be a challenge to a 'good coach'. Raw potential is definitely there I assure you.

blueboy. why would sending him out on loan to gain experience of playing regularly at 1st team level mean wed then sell him? this is mm were talking about not rk. there were people on here who were suggesting that taylor would be sold when he went to pboro on loan, but as was always the plan hes back. and the same will be the case with Marriott. not saying id be disappointed if he was given a chance here now, but do think a spell on loan could do him the world of good.

Oh & blueboy. Nouble has played well over 100 matches in his career and sored around 8 goals i believe. While id love to be wrong i cant see him being nething other than the worst striker weve ever had, imo.

I should imagine it is the same people who are crying for Marriott to be playing first team now who: are crying get rid of Nouble he's no good; would be crying the same about Marriott if he played a dozen games or so and was not banging them in at this level. It is easy for fans to shout "give youth a chance" and then complain about the very same when they don't perform. Let's trust the man in the know with who is and isn't ready. I am sure that come the end of the season, Marriott will have made more appearances for Town when the time is right. That way he will be brought through in the gradual Bobby Robson way and not thrown in at the deep end to sink or swim. Having him involved regularly in the match day squad is the start of that process of getting him ready.

thanks for the response to my post from other users.no i dont expect to see the youth team fielded and i also wanted to see cresswell, carson, hyam and smith given their chance when they were on the fringe.and i'am not that naive to think that marriott is going to be a 30 goal a season man for us.i think we have enough through midfield and defence its just up front we look one dimensional. if mcgoldrick is injured (which will happen!)we are going to struggle.me personaly, i would rather know what i have than wait until we are forced into a situation.murphy always puts a good shift in but is back on his heels in and around the box.as we have been looking for a fox in the box for many years all i'm saying is give him a shot. if we start to slide down the table marriott will not get his chance to show what he can do. so in my view we should try him now..,and also as the gaffer has said football is a game of opinions but his is the only one that matters. i its just interesting for me to put a view on a site and see what responses i get,as we can all talk a good game.

Always good to read about when a player is praising another player, also this may have an impact on MM to play him. Mick is a very experience coach though he knows what hes doing and he will start playing him when the time is right Im sure. Its also very good how we keep producing young players. Onwards and upwards

"We have the new Michael Owen" JimmyJazz...can't believe it's you falling for it again! You seem to yearn for drama, at the expense of accuracy and intelligence. Do you watch too many soaps? Marriott's playing style is 'like Michael Owen', is the way intelligent people read it. But some struggled to understand the basic article again. You got a few 'likes' so you ain't the only gullible tabloid stooge, JimmyJ. I hope you don't lap up the scandal and bias so easily, when reading the BBC etc. Scary thought.

For those still slating Jet he has 10 goals in 15 games not just scoring against Oldham !! Everyone said the same about Rhodes when we sold him "he is only scoring in a lower league" at least he has the ability to do so .Anderson quite clearly does not . And in a team so defensive minded playing two holding midfielders and a central midfielder at left wing and a centre back at fullback Jet would have been ideal . Also when did MM give JET the opportunity to play 7 games in a row like Anderson ? Poor decision by a flairless manager
