Nouble Benefiting From Run in Team
Thursday, 26th Dec 2013 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy says striker Frank Nouble is benefiting from having a run in the Town side. The 22-year-old has impressed since coming into the XI four games ago and looks set to start again at Doncaster today.

McCarthy said: “It doesn’t matter who it is, Tunners is getting better by playing games week in, week out and I think Frank’s in his best run of form because he’s being picked and I guess having somebody believe in him and saying ‘Go on, carry on’.

“I think the way we’re playing is suiting him, the 4-3-3 is certainly suiting him. And I think he’s been excellent, I really do.

“He’s got to get his goals now, having played well. Having played well, all strikers want to score goals, but his contribution to the team has been very, very good in recent weeks.”

Also benefiting from playing games is 19-year-old Jack Marriott, who netted his eighth goal in eight games for loan club Woking at the weekend.

McCarthy says that despite having been impressed with his form, Marriott is a little way down the pecking order at Portman Road at present and is likely to go out on loan to a Football League club when his spell with the Cards is up on January 2nd.

“Without being disrespectful, the Skrill Premier is not the Championship, we’re three leagues further up,” he said.

“What he’s doing is going out and learning his trade. He’s playing in a tough league and if he can keep progressing we want to get him in our team. But he’s not in front of the lads we’ve got at the moment.”

Well I do not think he is - sorry.

I would like to know what Frank can do that Jack can't. He never looks like he has a goal in him considering he is playing uptop whereas Marriot does. Nouble is compared to Shefti by some people but he was always likely to create something by unsettling defenders. For all Noubles strength and athleticism he does not convince me he is good enough and I feel he is keeping better players out. I would like to swap Marriot for Nouble with Woking and give him a run in the side as he will get better! As for Wordsworth we may as well part company with him as he seems to be taking the money and not contributing to Ipswich town. We should be disappointed to not come away with 3 points today, but this is the sort of side we struggle against. By the way Doncaster to Bournemouth must be the worst pairing of games for a football club to play over Christmas - Thankyou FA.

He's good at protecting his players you can say that much.

Nouble still doesn't impress me enough to think he should be in the starting XI, but I am happy to have him as an alternative option on the bench should a chance of tactic be required. Presumably he will be the one to drop down when Ebanks-Blake is up to match fitness. I prefer Murphy to Nouble, but again see him more of an impact sub rather than full 90 player for us.
The idea of a McGoldrick, Ebanks-Blake strikeforce is something I'm really looking forward to though & should frighten the life out of Championship defenders.
Despite the fact the we have still not seen enough of Taylor in a Town shirt to be able to assess just what he is capable of, & for some he seems to have gotten better & better the more he has been left out, I would still like to think he can make an impact for us in the push for the playoffs in 2014. His direct running & close control at pace is another option & I remain convinced, without evidence to date, that he cowould link excellently with McGoldrick, coming from deep.
I am with Mick on Marriott; great prospect for seasons beyond this one. Doing everything he can so far & a loan move to a League 1 side for the remainder of the season would be perfect for him. He is a completely different player to Nouble or Murphy, so I don't think they are the ones he is competing against in Mick's eyes, while he could not pass up on the chance to sign a proven top Championship striker at 27 in favour of bringing Marriott back into the squad. I suspect Taylor will be sold in the summer, as Mick doesn't seem to fancy him, which will create the space for a more experienced Marriott to make his mark. Perhaps Ebanks-Blake will move on too, but either way I am sure he'll get his chance here next season.

I've not been that impressed with Frank's ability in the games I've seen. That said, he always seems to put a shift in and doesn't give up. If you compare him to someone like JET, who couldn't hold down a regular starting place either, JET has more talent, but just didn't appear interested at times. Our team is in a better place at this stage of the season than it has been for years. For me, that's a reason to be cheerful and Frank is as much a part of that set up as anyone. Stability is the key and Mick and Terry are providing it. COYB!
