Veseli Will Learn From Loan Spell
Wednesday, 8th Jan 2014 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy says Blues defender Freddie Veseli will learn vital lessons during his loan spell at Bury that he won’t have picked up in his time with either the Manchester City or Manchester United academies.

Former Swiss U21 international Veseli joined the Blues on a two-year deal following his release by United last summer, 18 months after leaving City’s youth set-up to join their rivals.

Since putting pen to paper at Portman Road, the 21-year-old’s only Town appearance came in the 2-0 Capital One Cup defeat at Stevenage in August.

McCarthy says Veseli will benefit from his month with the League Two club: “David Flitcroft rang me up and he’s going play him at right-back or right wing-back, in his proper position. He just needs games.

“He’s missed out on playing rough and tumble, scrappy Football League matches. Playing at Manchester United in their U21s, you’d have the ball for 60 per cent of the time, probably.

“I think that’s maybe what he’s been used to. He’s a good footballer. It’s the games like the one against Charlton the other night and the one at Bournemouth where it’s backs against the wall, defending, heading and tackling and being in your position where you actually learn.”

He says there are aspects of the game which can only be picked up through playing competitive first team matches: “You get coached in the U21s and through the academy, but that’s where you start earning your living.

“The same with Elliott Hewitt [on loan at Gillingham], you’re playing against more physical players, a more physical approach, there’s no 50/50s where somebody might just let someone have it.

“You saw them here the other night, sliding off the pitch, some great tackles. It was a fabulous game considering the conditions. That is the level they have got to get to, the pair of them.”

Veseli’s only appearance for the Shakers so far was their 3-0 New Year’s Day victory at Hartlepool, while Hewitt is yet to add to the three games he played for the Gills in November since returning to the Priestfield Stadium having recovered from his ankle injury.

Striker Jack Marriott is also with the League One side and is still to make his debut having been an unused sub in Friday’s 1-0 victory over Wolves.

Meanwhile, Wolves’ interest in loaning Blues skipper Carlos Edwards is understood to have cooled with another winger, Derby’s Michael Jacobs, who has been on loan at Molineux, signing on a permanent basis.

It's not compulsory that we are a scrappy team who constantly plays without the ball and struggles/fails to hold onto one nil leads at home. We could try something novel like........playing football and attempting to have 60% of possession.

had high hope for this lad because of his back ground, but still could become good for us, a loan spell might just be what is needed, Martin was excellent when he came back from his loan spell for the rest of that season.

Changing the subject all the talk about Cresswell being sold cheap by Mr Evans because he wants the money, think about it if money was the main thing for Mr Evans why buy a football club?
The only way Mr Evans will get his £82 million back is to get the club in the prem and selling your best players cheap is not the way forward.

big_gaz67 - For that, we would need to have a Prem top four level of player superiority, something which is almost impossible in the Championship (unless you borrow half an Italian squad). In this division, teams are too even to expect to be able to get away with pretty football without the tough defending.

Obviously MM has not seen enough from FV on a day to day basis and i think this a good move for all concerned.
Lets remember that Taricco spent his first year in our reserves and went onto become a great player for us, and this lad is still very young.

@Dozzell's-hat: same with Petta! I hope he comes good, was probably most excited with his signing over all the others in the close season

It's a fair observation that a ManU yoof is going to have to learn how to scrap if he drops down a league or two to kick-start his career. A bit of time learning that side of the game will show whether Veseli has the appetite to progress in England. Watching the ManU lot on telly last night, they certainly didn't look up for a scrap, and lost out as a result.

Mick is a great man manager, I just hope he changes to a more "attractive" style of play, though I'll always be grateful for what he's done for our club so far.

eddiegrundy - perhaps he is cold?, Sindre 94 = Oh I hope so! I am in agreement that MM done the job he had to do last year but at the moment the dross we are playing at home is awful.

Guthrum I am not expecting Premier League top 4 creativity, nor am I expecting the defence to stop working hard. What I would love to see is a player passing to another, then talking two or three steps on the blind side of the opposing/midfielder to be in a position to receive a simple pass back in space. So many times a ball is played from the midfield to Cresswell and the midfielder has no interest in wanting the ball back - therefore making us so easy to defend against. I'm not thinking Barcelona but I am thinking Burley..........

No,for that you would need to play like Preston or Bournemouth, I think it's fair to say we had less than 50% of the play.................Beattie, Brazil,& all the other 17 year olds made mistakes when they first came in the team, but they weren't dumped straight back in the reserves..........didn't turn out to bad did they! Warks baptism against the Leeds of the 70s there is not a single game today that would match the physical contact of that team. Pat them on the back, kick them up the arse, but at least give them a chance to play a few games in the first team to gain experience.
Elliott I know it's a sin to spend to much time in the oppositions half but I forgive you!!

Learning to defend all the time .........negative
Learning to keep the ball most of the time........positive

I agree with all of you wanting the team to play "attractive football". I want that too. But even more than that, I want the team to play in the Premier League again.
I want us to win games, get results and finish the season in the top-two - or if not, in the top-six winning promotion in the play-off. I'm not sure we can do that and play "attractive football" with the squad we have now. I think we risk losing games and finishing where we were when Keane and Jewell was at the club, if we try too much of the fancy stuff. It's all about getting out of this leauge any way possible. Then we can talk about the quality of the entertainment.
Having supported Ipswich for well over 40 years, having played myself in a few sides and having coached a lot of teams, to me it's "attractive" when we get three points. That's all that matters really.

BlueSwede;-Big Joe managed the playoffs in two out of three years playing attractive football and blooding youngsters, neither of which seems to interest Mick;and financially we were in far worse position than we are now(I hope!).
I can add another ten years to time following Town, probably as I am older;but have not seen such drab football very often to match the fare on offer at the moment at PR,which probably accounts for lower attendances along with high matchday ticket prices and no phone purchase facility.
This is however the best we have done with such poor entertainment,so must be grateful for that if nothing else.

Seasider: Perhaps I would be more critical as well if I could go to all the games. Wish I could, but being on the other side of the Northsea I have to settle with a trip to Portman Road whenever possible. And watch the odd game on Swedish television. Will see the game against QPR this weekend and come back with my thoughts after that. Hopefully after three fresh points.
