Town Back in for Green
Friday, 7th Feb 2014 12:42

TWTD understands that Town have renewed their interest in Leeds United’s Republic of Ireland international midfielder Paul Green. Yesterday, boss Mick McCarthy revealed that the Blues are in currently in talks regarding a potential loan signing.

McCarthy pulled out of a deal to sign 30-year-old Green on the final day of the transfer window a week ago with the Whites wanting Town to pay too great a proportion of his wages.

Speaking last Saturday, the Blues manager didn’t rule out making a new attempt to sign Green on a 93-day emergency loan, but said he would also look at other options. Former Town man Owen Garvan was amongst those eyed, although his ongoing patellar tendinitis may have meant that move was viewed as too risky.

The takeover saga at Leeds seems unlikely to come to a quick resolution and has led to a cash flow crisis, and they may now be more willing to compromise on a deal.

Yesterday, Whites boss Brian McDermott is reported to have said that Green could be close to making a loan move away from Elland Road.

Green was previously linked with the Blues during Paul Jewell’s time as boss, the former Town manager having signed him during his spell at Derby.

Pontefract-born Green started his career with Doncaster Rovers, joined Derby on a free transfer in the summer of 2008 and then moved on to Leeds in June 2012, signing a two-year deal. He has been capped 20 times by Ireland, scoring once.

The 5ft 9in tall midfielder has made 42 starts and four sub appearances during his time with Leeds, scoring four goals, one in last season's 2-0 defeat of the Blues at Elland Road.

Green hasn’t played a first team game for the Whites since October, having suffered a hamstring injury while on international duty in November but returned to training in January.

Brazilblue - Garvan would not be fit - he hasn't played first team football for 6 months , he is injury prone and not exactly reknown for his energy levels - hardly a good acquisition for a push toward the play - offs ?

Thankfully it looks like Garvan wont be returning and is off to Forest according the the Daily Mirror. Green is more of a MM type of player workmanlike rather than creative but that is what wingers are for. Whether there is anyone better who is available and wants come on loan i'm not sure but i think this might be a red herring and that the player MM is really after is O'Hara!

Fit Green or Unfit Garvan, not much of a choice.Pity the Moussa link(10 goals this season from midfield for Coventry) seems off the mark.

Asked a couple of leeds season tickets holders and their responses surprised me a bit in that they think he's a good centre midfielder and cant understand how he's not in their team most weeks. I am not in a position to judge since i've never seen he play but suggest that many who are saying "no dont get him" are in the same position.
I have seen Garvin play many many times and certainly wouldn't want him back here. People say his lazy style was like Hoddle but no.. he was just lazy. Always best never to come back ... bit like girlfriends !

This constant reference to a "MM type of player". What do you mean? Do you mean hard working or not creative? I'm not sure if it's a dig or a compliment. For sure we don't want a gifted lazy player (a la Counago). I'd rather a hard working professional who will fit into a team which is light on both numbers and investment but still sitting 7th in the table and just 4 points off the playoffs. That sort of a "MM type player" is very welcome.

Round 2 Green v Garven is back on. MM please get this signing done as its not a very exciting fight,We need a spark in the middle to lift our team and this does not do it for me.Chances are 6th is going to be hard for us as forest and reading have more about them squad wise so go for a gamble player someone said the guy from coventry 1o goals why not a player like that.Theses two lads linked wont make a big enough difference an dont have to.

........ he's so good - even Leeds don't want him - should tell us something I would think.

Totally uninspired by this.

the type of player you sign if you with tom continue playing over the top and just want little scrappers with defensive minds in the middle.
thought things may be looking up wit the garvan link but mick will never change his long ball defensive style is what we are gonna get .
mick get a reasonable results playing this way and is proberbly an alright bloke to have a pint with but i hate the style we play these days and would rather finish a few places lower trying to play attacking footie on the deck give younger players a chance and build for the future.
