Town and Charlton Watching Stewart Situation
Monday, 23rd Jun 2014 23:37

TWTD understands that Town and Charlton are watching developments regarding winger Cameron Stewart, whose impending permanent switch to Leeds United looks set to be cancelled by the West Yorkshire club.

The 23-year-old joined the Whites on loan from Hull in January with a three-year contract which would be formalised on July 1st signed as part of the deal.

However, with manager Brian McDermott having moved on and the club now under new owner Massimo Cellino, Leeds are understood to be working on finding a way to extricate themselves from the arrangement. Town and the Addicks, with whom Stewart has previously been on loan, are interested observers of the situation.

The Blues were mentioned in connection with a move for Stewart last summer and then again in January.

Stewart began his career with hometown club Manchester United during which time he went on loan to Yeovil and Hull before moving to the KC Stadium on a permanent basis in January 2011.

Having been on loan at Burnley and Blackburn during 2012/13, the former England U17, U19 and U20 international spent the first half of last season on loan with Charlton before making his move to Leeds in January with his Tigers contract up this summer.

Meanwhile, Town are reportedly set to receive a small sell-on from former midfielder Conor Hourihane’s move from Plymouth to Barnsley.

The Irishman, who completed a switch worth a reported £200,000 earlier today, followed his former Sunderland manager Roy Keane to Portman Road in the summer of 2009 but moved on to the Pilgrims, where he was skipper last season, on a free transfer a year later having been unable to break into the first team at Portman Road.

Even Barnsley can sign a player for 200k...knowing us we'd have paid up his contract & gave him away...silly me, we probably already have !!

Leeds trying to cancel their own free transfer signing?

"knowing us we'd have paid up his contract & gave him away...silly me, we probably already have !!"

Did you actually read the article? It says we are due a sell-on fee. So, that's a kid we signed for nothing, who didn't play for the first team, generating us a transfer fee.

Too many fans so desperate to find a critical angle, regardless of what's put in front of them.

Why do Leeds not wish to follow through on the 3 year contract part of the deal, having seen him up close for the last 6 months? If it's because they have become a basketcase club, fair enough, or if it's because the new owners want to bring in Italian players a la Watford, well that wouldn't worry me either. It just seems odd that they'd let him go if he had performed well & was a good influence around the place.
Proceed with caution.

He looked decent when he played for Charlton against us last season, and i'm sure he made their euqaliser at Elland Rd when we played Leeds. Creative and attacking - Leeds' loss could well be our gain and I hope it is

Leeds pulling out due to wages required, so can't see us going in for him

Lads, Leeds fan with my views on Cameron Stewart for what its worth. I don't think we are getting rid of him because of wages / cost cutting.

When he came I spoke to my mate who is a Hull season ticket holder & his summary was a lightweight who sulks when it doesnt go his way.

He came to us and well turned out to be a lightweight who couldn't handle the physicality of the games. He was so poor he didn't even make the bench & was replaced by a striker (Connor wickham - great player BTW) playing out of position (great idea Brian).

I think you will struggle to find a single Leeds fan who thinks us getting rid of him is a bad thing. Some players just aren't able to handle pressure & I think thats the case with this guy. He could be ok in a settled environment with less pressure but overall very poor

Thanks for the insight. Sounds like another MM&TC project then, don't mind that at all if they think he has something and they can turn him into a player.

I still don't understand how even league one clubs can pay a fee and we can't or won't.

Stewart would be a good signing, but can't see us competing on wages.

olimar - ....... disappointing thing is, you don't have to look far to find that 'critical angle' ............. unless of course you prefer not to - and remain ablivious to the facts.

Bravo - 'bring back wickham' - finger permantly on the minus click, every time a nerve is touched.

Let's hope this Club, and of course the Manager, proves that any current pessimism is unfounded - by signing a few essential players very soon, and kicking off the new season with a settled side for once.

Not asking for anything that isn't required to be successful - or is it too much to expect ??? - because we are IPSWICH.

NoelTheDubb: This is all rumours. I empathise with what you're saying, and when PJ was at the helm, it was true. No end of "will he? / won't he" situations. BUT . . . When MM/TC took over, it changed. So and so is interesting ITFC. . . bish bosh wallop!! Deal done!!

While the world cup is still running, I think transfers will not happen.

Also, there was an article on TWTD very recently where MM said he would not be getting players in during June/July. Why pay them for this period when there are no matches to be played? Very shrewd, in my opinion.

Saw him a few times on the box last season (simply because Leeds were on the box every other week) and have to say looked light weight and didn't rate him...anyway probably nothing behind this story.
