Norwich Game Could Move Again
Wednesday, 2nd Jul 2014 16:35

Town’s home derby against Norwich City, controversially moved to noon on Sunday 24th August from the previous day earlier this week, could be set for a further switch with a meeting to discuss issues surrounding the match taking place later this week.

The clubs, the police and local councils will be amongst those attending a meeting on Friday afternoon to talk about matters relating to the game, including the rail engineering work which is taking place between Norwich and Ipswich on the Sunday.

Town club secretary Sally Webb told BBC Radio Suffolk’s Mark Murphy Show: “We are meeting on Friday at Suffolk Constabulary headquarters where a lot of people will be getting around the table to talk through the issues about the game and all those factors which are now becoming known, including disruption in the town centre to do with roadworks.

“All these things are coming to light and we need to sit down and discuss them all and go through this very, very carefully to ensure that we come to the right conclusion.”

We understand that a Saturday kick-off, most likely at lunchtime, has not yet been entirely ruled out and Webb confirmed that the current scheduling could change: “I’m not going to say it’s cast in stone. The likelihood and the recommendations have been to hold it on a Sunday.”

She added: “It’s possible that Sky may be interested, they do have a slot on a Sunday at 1pm, that’s a possibility.”

I think one of the main issues surrounding the match taking place later this week would be that we've only just started pre-season training, so I think it ought to stay within the confines of the official season dates to be honest...

What is the point of having this meeting and wasting every ones time until Sky decide if they want to cover this game.
Don't the Club, the Police, the Council, and the Supporters trust get the message. Sky TV dictate kick off times not any of your groups.

I thought it was confirmed that it will be on a Sunday?? Then I hear it could be moved again so it hasn't really been confirmed then?! Honestly don't see the problem of it being played on a Saturday at 3pm unless televised. I've also noticed Leeds already have their first televised game confirmed, their first home game! Do you think we'll have more televised than them in a month? No chance.

For me a 12 noon kickoff means me watching it at 4am in Vancouver, so I'd much prefer a 5.30pm kickoff

This is a bit of a shambles. I suspect this wasn't thought through, and now all parties have realised the problems with travel on the Sunday. Needs to be sorted as soon as possible. Personally would prefer a Saturday as think this is the best time for a derby, but not overly concerned if its a Sunday. A Monday night would however be disappointing considering the high number of week games. If Norwich are playing their home game on a Saturday, why not keep it the same?

This is a joke! Many people (including myself) take holiday over bank holiday week.
I purposely avoided Saturdays before the fixtures were announced, but changed my hotel booking when I heard of the Sunday switch - will be very annoyed and disappointed if it now switches to the Monday!
If Norwich can host theirs on a Saturday then I'm sure we can too!

Why can't the police just leave things alone. I was in the job in the 70's & 80's when going to football was taking your life in your hands and we managed perfectly well. With so many women and children now going to football the whole experience has changed.
I suspect this has more to do with costs. Nowadays there are very few officers on duty for any match and more often than not none inside the ground because the club have to pay for them.
It's also cost effective for the police to do a Sunday lunch time - by changing officers days off in advance they don't have to pay overtime.
In my view all matches should kick off at 3pm on a Saturday - that is when football should be played.

Not looking good for me at the moment. I have to work on Saturdays in August and there are no trains on the Sunday.

Whichever date it is will not suit everybody, but surely it;'s not that hard just to pick one and stick to it? At least that's fair on people who've committed to days off, travel, accommodation etc.

Re Sunday no trains - they will run a rail replacement service presumably? Why not run special football buses? Or postpone the engineering works? So many options, so little initiative....

Come on, when was the last time there were any real problems between Norwich and Ipswich fans? Yea there's a rivalry, it's not violent, it's all in the spirit of the game. This isn't f**king Chelsea v Millwall or something.

Why do Mr Murdoch and/or the threat of violence dictate when we play our games?
Saturday 3.00 pm is traditional, most people (I mean real fans) want it, without us there is no footbal, why are our views not considered?
