Sharp Talks Ongoing
Friday, 16th Jan 2015 13:56

TWTD understands that Town are continuing talks with Leeds United regarding the move for striker Billy Sharp we revealed this morning. The 28-year-old is out of favour at Elland Road, having joined them on a two-year deal last summer.

The Blues are likely to be keen to agree a loan deal, but the Whites may want Sharp, who has made only nine starts and nine sub appearances, scoring two goals, off their books permanently.

Sharp started his career with hometown club Sheffield United but made only two senior sub appearances before moving on to Rushden and Diamonds in January 2005.

The striker impressed with the Northamptonshire club and six months later joined Scunthorpe.

His goalscoring form for the Iron won him a move back to the Blades in the summer of 2007 but again having failed to make his mark at Bramall Lane, he moved out on loan to Doncaster before signing a permanent deal at the Keepmoat Stadium in September 2009.

Town boss Paul Jewell repeatedly tried to sign Sharp in the summer of 2011 but he remained with the South Yorkshire club.

In November that year, Sharp received an ovation from the Town support after he scored at Portman Road soon after the death of his newborn son Luey, something the frontman later described as a “special thing”.

Sharp subsequently moved on to Southampton in January 2012 before loan spells at Nottingham Forest, Reading and back at Doncaster prior to joining Leeds in August last year. The Whites handed the Saints £600,000 to cover paying up his contract at St Mary's.

Town boss Mick McCarthy is still keen to add to his striking options, despite having signed Colchester’s Freddie Sears earlier today with David McGoldrick a doubt ahead of tomorrow’s game at Millwall due to a knee injury.

Sharp could be involved in the Town squad for the Millwall game if a loan deal is agreed by noon tomorrow.

the fact that both he and Hunt where out of favor at Leeds show how poor their management is.

If we can get this guy in too then I can see us reverting back to the 4-3-3 and therefore relieving the pressure on the midfielders a bit. I don't think there's a player around at the moment who I would like to see at this club more than Sharp, he's a decent fella and a top professional.

Well done MM, and more importantly, well done the Town board!

Must be going to play four up front, not bother with a creative midfield until Teddy gets over the measles and hope it's not windy with our long ball game!

Let's get this guy. McG's knee might take a while to heal.

Maybe Mcgoldricks injury problem from last season has returned and is more serious than the club are letting on.

When fit I would love to see Mcgoldrick in midfield, he could well be our missing midfield link

Sharp is an excellent pro who has a great work ethic and scores goals. Get him in. With MM and TC's man management they'll soon restore his confidence.
Now for a midfielder please Mr Evans.

As I said on another thread, Sears and Sharp miles better than Bajner and Sammon. Hope a deal can be agreed. Then for a Williams type player and back up keeper.

Disappointed we didn't sign him previously but would like to see the deal done this time. Maybe DMGs injury from last season is more than expected. MCG may not be a prolific goal scorer this season but his playmaking has been outstanding and I think he would fit in that creative midfielder link we're missing.

A friend of mine bumped into Noel Hunt after the Derby game and he said the atmosphere at Leeds is toxic. Sharp probably just can't wait to leave. Worth a punt. In Mick we trust ......... dare to dream

Sears deal sealed, let's snap up Sharp, don't worry about Didz...he's the missing creative mid, onwards and upwards for Town we cheer, best season by far for many a year!

Just remember that these talks will also involve the Leeds owner Massimo Cellino who by all accounts is a very superstitious man. Any deal may be done/undone by any one of a number of seemingly irrelevant issues and not necessarily fail because of Sharp himself.

Obviously has, and can, score goals - lost his way a bit during recent times but worth a punt in hope that he can reclaim some previous good form.

All good Strikers thrive on good service - and he would certainly need, and expect it.

Exactly typeof fowrard we need - like Sears - Dids and Murph , Sears and Sharp and Hunt
That is a DECENT ATTACKING OPTION
Add Lttle JW and we will have some tricky little players

For those that criticise, our midfield was perfectly adequate, albeit not brilliant, during a long unbeaten run. Against Derby we didn't have Skuse and had an ailing Tabb and Bishop and none played against Saints. Hyam had 2 bad games. MM surprised us with Sears so I'm sure he'll quietly sort the midfield if the right person is available

By the reaction on here I don't think there is any doubt he would be welcomed with open arms
