Wood Set to Join Town
Friday, 27th Feb 2015 09:15

Leicester City striker Chris Wood is set to join the Blues on loan in time for Sunday's East Anglian derby with Norwich City at Carrow Road.

The 23-year-old has been linked with the Blues since early last month with Wolves and Reading both having shown interest in the last few days, while AFC Bournemouth and Sheffield Wednesday were previously understood to be keen to add him to their squads for the run-in.

Wood, Tommy Smith’s room-mate when they are on international duty with New Zealand, is yet to start for the Foxes since their promotion to the Premier League, having scored eight goals last season, four in the Championship, four in the Capital One Cup.

Born in Auckland, Wood started his British career with West Brom, spending time out on loan with Barnsley, Brighton, Birmingham, Bristol City, Millwall and Leicester before joining the Foxes permanently for £2 million in January 2013.

Wood's last senior action was a 30-minute sub appearance in the 1-0 FA Cup win over Newcastle on January 3rd and the 6ft 2in tall frontman returned to training after an ankle injury earlier in the week.

Town boss Mick McCarthy has been keen to add another striker to his squad with Noel Hunt probably out for the season with a knee injury, while David McGoldrick has missed the last four matches with a thigh problem.

The Blues also struggled when without target man Daryl Murphy in the recent game against Wigan.

Hopefully 3rd time lucky! He's a very good striker for this level and would be a welcome addition. Good luck and make yourself a hero on Sunday!

Could be good at many levels

I don't know him - but many here have been consistently screaming for him so .... let's hope you are right (IF he signs)

Also - as a good friend of a "nervous" Tommy Smith this could be a good settling influence??

Bring on the peas and sweetcorn on Sunday !!!!!!

Surely Mick is going back to the 4-3-3 that served us so well earlier in the season now! Front 3 of Murphy, Wood and Sears would destroy any defence in this league!

Great news if it goes through.
It makes more sense than the French winger.

Good signing, makes me think it was more Mick that ended the Knochaert interest not vice versa.

Makes me think that the Didsy injury is more serious than we have been told ?

Either way, a decent addition and if he helps us beat the Budgies at the weekend, I will forever be in his debt !

TBH I don't know much about Wood, is he a direct replacement for Murphy in case he is injured? If not, I don't see the sense in this signing. Its all well having 5 strikers but you need to get the ball to them and we are lacking width and so resorting to pumping it up the middle. I am disappointed that Knochaert decided against joining us as he would have given us more options on the wing. I'd like to have seen a quality wide man come in.

Be interesting to see how he is integrated, if at all? Sears has just banged in 2 goals and looks ready to push on and only a madman would drop him now, he aint gonna be replacing Murphy, so it's 4-3-3 or he's warming the bench...........which is fine given that Didz and Hunt are injured and we need back up.

You have to ask is an unsettled McGoldrick going in the opposite direction in the summer?

Didsy still out for another couple of weeks, good competion for places. Wood, Murphy and Sears front three would have the potential to fire the promotion push !!

A front 5 of Murphy, Wood, McGoldrick and Sears plus Varney isn't something any defence would relish facing. I do love some nice positive news on a Friday morning COYB

Well done Woody!! I think this could be a really clever move. You don't look as though you're going to get a game in the premiership with the foxes. They're not going to be there much longer, so . . . look to the future and play in the premiership with town next season!! Like it!!

Is David Nugent still at Leicester?
