Wigan Winger Linked
Sunday, 8th Mar 2015 11:06

Town are reported to be keen to sign Wigan winger James McClean on loan for the remainder of the season.

According to the Sun on Sunday manager Mick McCarthy wants to add the Ireland international to his squad as the Blues go into the final 10 games of the season.

Town would reportedly have to pay McClean £20,000 a week if he were to make the move, which would appear to be a significant potential stumbling block.

The 25-year-old has been a regular in the Wigan side in recent weeks as the Latics continue their relegation battle so would seem to be firmly in manager Malky Mackay’s plans for the rest of the season, however, the Sunday People reports that Championship clubs have been made aware of his availability but that his wages - which they claim to be £1.5 million a year - could scupper any move.

Blues boss McCarthy is keen to add to his midfield options having seen Leicester's Anthony Knockaert turn down a loan move earlier in the month. Football League clubs have until Thursday 26th March to bring players in on emergency loans.

McClean started his senior career with hometown clubs Institute and Derry City before moving to Sunderland in 2011 for £350,000. In the summer of 2013 he joined Wigan on a three-year deal. He has been capped 25 times by the Republic of Ireland, scoring four goals.

He is a decent player, and only a few years ago was being tipped as the 'next big thing' at Sunderland. He would certainly offer an improvement out wide though. Yes, he naturally plays on the left, and it would be a shame to see Parr dropped because he's a consistent performer, but McClean can also play wide right too. That's the position we really need to fill as we don't seem to have a consistent threat down the right flank. As the article points out though, those wages will likely be a block on any potential move. Hopefully Evans loosens the purse strings and allows us to bring him in because I think he could make a difference.

£20,000 a week for a club who's going down to league 1, we don't even have a player who's on £10,000 a week and we are attempting at the other, for that I'm major grateful and it's a massive hats of to the club. Having said that, there's no point in paying £20,000 a week for him to come and sit on the bench. He won't get in front of tabby.

That to me says that Stewart and Henshall have no future here and that Connolly isn't up to speed as yet and is one for the future.

Never liked him after the refusing to wear a poppy incident. He's decent but nothing like as good as Knockaert for example. Derby are paying 20k a week for a much better player in Tom Ince. However, at least we're looking to address the wing problem.

Not going to happen, we're not going to pay a loan player £20k a week

If Parr played for another club as left mid we would be delighted to sign him ,so MM as far as im concerned left mid is sorted. Right mid is not so can we have an Arsenal under 21 on loan just to fill that position. Thanks. Ps on a serious note we will strengthen this week im convinced.

If I'm not mistaken he played through the middle against us, home & away. Not really an out & out winger. I do rate him though.

Better than Knockaert, when he's not acting like a donut

"£20,000 per week wages would be a significant stumbling block'. Don't know about stumbling block, more like a brick wall.

Can't be any worse than the last Mcclean in the club, offers something else but with his previous spells of causing trouble I doubt he's the sort of player mick will want in, plus with a hefty wage fee of 20k a week and his son in-law tabb in the squad I doubt this will happen.

Ticks some boxes but for 20k a week got to be better than joniesta for me. Rhodes might be going to Derby allegedly, we really need someone who can create something out of nothing that other teams would be terrified of, if this player exists or would contemplate coming here? We are so close just like the others in the top ten, this league is there for the taking.coyb

I don't see why we don't play 532 instead of tabb bru Parr or bishop out wide. Use Parr and mings as wingbacks skuse and bru or tabb in front of the back 3 bishop or mcgoldrick attacking midfielder and 2 up front. Anderson offers very little and Stewart can't even get on the bench.

Good signing if we can agree to pay a percentage of his wages. I see that Sheff Weds are linked in a £12m bid for Jordan Rhodes in the papers today!

Haven't we got enough wingers at the club already?..Anderson,Stewart,Stephen Hunt,Henshall,Connolly..plus Chaplow & Tabb were both wingers originally & Noel Hunt & Ambrose can play out wide too.

It's a creative central midfielder who can control the game and knock in 8-10 goals a season that should be our priority.

I'm sorry but no player/person who refuses to wear a poppy on his shirt should be welcome to our club! Let's move on

If this footballer comes to our club then I'm finished with it until he leaves. Google the open letter he sent to his chairman reference refusing to wear a poopy on his shirt and make your own opinion

Its a no from me but not realistic anyway. £20K a week a joke and no way will we even pay half of that.

Why is everyone so obsessed with Jonny Parr? I will give him the fact he never stops trying but he still hasn't got the quality we need on left mid! Have you ever seen him take a man on? Put a decent ball in the box? I haven't.
His best moments are when he's dispossessing the opposition right back or getting lucky ricochets in the tackle.

I would far rather Mings play at left mid as he is far more of a threat and play Parr in his natural position at left back. At this level Mings is wasted at left back and could be this divisions Bale. Very direct and takes his man on and is very powerful.
