Howe Much? Cherries Boss Responds to Spending Claims
Sunday, 5th Apr 2015 16:56

AFC Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe has responded to Town manager Mick McCarthy’s pre-match comments regarding the Cherries’ summer spending.

McCarthy was generally complimentary towards Good Friday’s visitors in the run-up to the 1-1 draw - “I think they are the best team in the league” - but pointed out that they have paid a few significant fees, rather more cash that he has during his time with the Blues.

“They’ve spent a few quid, a few more million than I have because I don’t think I’m at that million figure anyway,” the Town boss said at Thursday’s pre-match press conference.

“They’ve got good players, Eddie Howe’s done a very good job, of course. But they have been backed. They’ve got Tokelo Rantie who’s a sub, who I think they spent £3 million on. Callum Wilson, they spent a few million on in the summer.”

After the game Howe was keen to put the record straight regarding his club’s spending, telling the Bournemouth Echo: “The only thing that irks me is when people say things that are factually incorrect. Mick likes to talk a lot about our financial dealings and it’s not my style to comment back.

“All I will say is that in the build-up to the game, he spoke about Tokelo Rantie and Callum Wilson but forgot to mention we sold Lewis Grabban and I think you have to be fair and balanced.

“Our net trading from transfer fees in the summer was zero so to suggest we have built our success on money, I don’t buy and it’s factually incorrect so I would like to put that straight.”

While McCarthy didn’t mention Grabban’s move to Norwich for a reported £3 million, later on in his press conference he made reference to the £4 million sell-on the Cherries were understood to have received when former youngster Adam Lallana moved from Southampton to Liverpool.

“I think they were the beneficiaries of the Adam Lallana deal because he’d been there as a kid and that’s been spent well,” McCarthy added.

Eddie Howe forgot to mention the Lallana sale.

That's both of them factually incorrect then.

Is Eddie Howe aware that just because you have balanced books over the summer, you can still have spent a lot over the summer...

Factual incorrect is false, as the point each manager is making is different.

The Lallana money hasn't been spent yet. That was the funding for the Gray bid in January.

Spending on wages is still spending Mick. As stated by your own MD, you have about the sixth highest wage bill in the Championship. Plenty of spending going on at Ipswich, maybe not on transfer fees but on pay packets instead.

For Lewis Grabban, you can add Cresswell on our side. McCarthy isn't talking about the aggregate spend - he's talking about Bournemouth having playrw on their side who have been bought for several millions of pounds, which is true. Howe is a bit chippy, it seems to me, and over-sensitive when it comes to this.

Well I am sorry Eddie, but you have spent millions of pounds. Mick was fair and balanced; he has rightly said that you are the best team in the league (although others may dispute that), but he pointed out that you have been fortunate enough to be able to spend money to achieve that. You may not like the fact we drew with you and no doubt you do not appreciate our style of play, but Mick was being as fair and honest as ever. No, he didn't point out the sales you have made, but we lost a key player over the summer too. Why is it that the managers of other teams simply can't find it in themselves to at least be polite about us?

It's a good excuse for his team playing poor football and gets the fans on side. That can only be a good thing, right?

Looks like Mick is getting a bit under Howe's skin. Would love to know Howe's views on half his team diving.

Also they have spent transfer fees on lots of their squad and not just Rantie and Wilson which was 5.5 million overall. Spent 500k on Ritchie, substantial money on Kermorgant and also spent money on Cook and Pugh

my god there are a lot of thick fans, closet budgies or just idiots around...

Mick's squad cost £110k to assemble vs any team in this league is astounding.

If only Mick had been backed... what do you call Zeki Fryers and Jonny Williams then?

Forget the Adam lallana thing....... To spend 0 is a lot of money if you use as an example. Say cresses lol fee was 4-7 million as reported that means after Freddie Sears 100k transfer we spen minus 3.9-6.9 million hahahahahahahahahahahhahshahhahahhaha ! Eddie Howe is a big headed patronising manager imo, good manager no doubt

Patronising is the right word for this man, who looks likes butter wouldn't melt in his mouth. But Mick has got under his skin. Howe hasn't had any/much criticism in his managerial career and clearly can't take it.

We await with interest, though not expectation, his 'balanced view' of Callum Wilson's pathetic unbalanced diving. In addition he more or less told everyone Wilson would be fit for our match by saying that he probably wouldn't. Juvenile.

All pretty pointless argument
MM pointed out they had invested wisely - he just likes to remind people we have assembled a decent squad on pretty much nothing
Howe is technically a very good manager and to be fair some of the more influential players in midfield did not cost alot and some he picked up from lower leagues
We have , in recent weeks been undone by some big money loanees though - Bamford and Jones - who reportedly is having his £37k a week wages paid for by Bournemouth
If so , as I say who cares - MM has done a great job , Eddie Howe has done a great job - I hope Bournemouth go up and I am certain old Harry will be there in some capacity and their Russian 'Petrochemical' owner - his neighbour on Sandbanks - will splash the cash
Hope this is not another Portsmouth

Ipswich forget to mention the fee we received for Cresswell. I think Bournemouth spent wisely. They spent money yes. But they received it too. We went for the no fee and loan option. They spent on fees. Different policy. Time will tell which policy is better. Evans could have done the same.

MM was making the point because he needed to defend our playing style in such a chalk vs cheese game.

However, I agree with other posters that Howe has still spent millions more than Mick, even if it was derived from players sales. Mick also sold for decent money in the summer (Cresswell) but unlike Bournemouth we have quite a big debt to pay off thanks to previous manager mistakes.

That's why there certainty IS a difference in money spent, and why MM has been forced to scrap about playing up and at them maximising everyone's ability.

Well tosser of the year goes to whining little school boy Eddie Howe. A 1 trick pony, who didn't do anything when he was Burnley manager and someone who moans and whinges in the press of teams just don't roll over and let them hammer them, criticising them and labelling them direct and physical or words of a similar nature. Referees buy his crap in the press, the media also buy his crap and will have you believe they're Barcelona!! Well for all their amazing football they play, they played just as much long ball as we did on Saturday and scored from a set play!!! Arrogant, pretentious excuse of a manager!!!

Howe should concentrate on his own players and cheating. Its well known Howe has spent many hours at Liverpools training ground as well as certain european clubs. The tragedy is his team play eye catching football ,but their fan base is pathetic. In know way do they adhere to FFP , i.e. we break even with average 19k gates , their wage bill is third highest in the league ,our is 6th or 7th. So Howe admitted transferee dealings were a net zero. Other commercial aspects like sponsorship etc is lower than ours. So if we just scrape FFP how the hell do they do the same or better. Answer is they don't and they break the rules ,both on and off the pitch. Cheating on all fronts. Lets see where that gets them….
