McCarthy: Big Season for McGoldrick
Saturday, 4th Jul 2015 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy says striker David McGoldrick “wants to come back flying” after missing much of the second half of last season through injury. The Town manager believes 2015/16 is a big season for the Republic of Ireland international.

The 27-year-old returned to match action as a late sub in the play-off semi-final second leg at Norwich having been out of action since February with a troublesome thigh injury sustained in the defeat at Rotherham.

He subsequently joined up with the Irish squad for their June fixtures and won his second full cap when he played the first half of the 0-0 friendly draw with England in Dublin, having also featured for 45 minutes in a behind-closed-doors training game against Northern Ireland, which also ended goalless.

Like Ireland team-mate Daryl Murphy and Scotland’s Christophe Berra, McGoldrick, who netted seven times last season, having scored 13 in the previous campaign, has been given an additional two weeks off.

“Didz missed out through injury at the end of two seasons,” McCarthy said. “He was the top player the season before last and last season he played very well until he got injured unfortunately.

“He overshadowed Murph the year before then Murph did him last season before he got injured.

“It is a big season for him and he knows that. We spoke about it at the end of the season and he wants to come back flying.

“He’s having a couple of extra weeks off because he was involved with the Republic of Ireland.

“Hopefully if he stays injury free, his season will be great, not a problem at all. He’s a top player.”

McGoldrick, who joined the Blues from Nottingham Forest, initially on loan, in January 2013, is entering the final year of his Town contract.

Pitman, Sears, Murphy, Mcgoldrick and Hunt. One of either Murphy or McGoldrick will be sold this summer.

I've said it before and Patthegimp reiterates the point: we need a creative, goalscoring midfielder, right? Drop McGoldrick in there! Problem solved without a penny outlay. I maintain that McGoldrick is a bit of an 'accidental' goalscorer; he had a bit of a purple patch, but I don't think he can be relied upon. Look at the goals Murph scored - left foot, right foot, headers, tap-ins, 25 yarders. Much more natural...

McGoldrick is technically the best footballer at the club. Let's take advantage of that. Only problem is if McGoldrick sees himself that way. Might get a bit moody if not put up front...

Good player. Hope he does well and stays injury free next season. Can't see anyone signing him.

People are quick to forget that when he was playing we were 2nd in the league. And the fact he eas double marked last season led to murph getting so many goals.Still a top player and great competition up front next season with 4 of the best strikers in the league

I'd like to see Didzy play in the number 10 role just behind the 2 centre forwards, whoever they may be

Its odd but although I think we are nearly ready and are one of the contenders in the league, but I can still see 2 maybe 3 more signings but maybe nothing immediate prob after Ireland trip and a couple of weeks before season starts we will be complete, and I would like to try didzy behind front 2 could play there and would save cash but for one its a squad game and everyone needs to play their part, what we lacked mainly last year MM had to pick players who we were not best keen with because the others were not playing their part. this year we have a lot more depth and MM will have a tough job picking a team that I don't envy him as id love to play everyone but we all know a 4 strikers can be 100% consistant all season and unlike last year we didn't sometimes have a plan B this year I can see a B and C. you just have to look at the likes of boro good side but where the goals come from at least we can talk about who should start id rather than have nobody.

We now have four strikers, all of whom will expect to start each game. Pitman didn't discard the chance of premiership football without the promise that he would start games. And McGoldrick won't tolerate being a sub for long. How will this be resolved?

I haven't seen much of the new signings to be honest - but McGoldrick was the best ball-player in the squad by a hundred miles in previous seasons. Those few minutes that he came on in the play-off game reminded us just what we had been missing. Centre of midfield seems the obvious choice to me but it will be interesting to see how MM configures things this year.

Even in his short 15mts spell at Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarich in second leg of play offs he showed his obvious class and there is no doubt in my mind that if he had stayed fit we would have gone up automatically.

Nevertheless he does owe us big time as he himself knows and I suspect he may have a different role this year---player just behind the strikers and being a provider although obviously chipping in with a few himself.

Fantastic business so far by MM----just need 2 or 3 more QUALITY players, like midfield and a decent keeper and this could be our year----at last!!

Cant believe all the people saying they wish we got rid he is by far are best attacking player when fit he could get us promoted there is no price on that but all the same people would happily turn down 5 mil for a 32 YO who had 1 good season crazy
