Ex-Reading Keeper on Trial
Wednesday, 5th Aug 2015 18:01

TWTD understands that former Reading keeper Jonathan Henly has spent the week on trial with the Blues.

Henly, 21, played the second half of Monday’s 2-0 behind-closed-doors friendly defeat at Norwich, having previously been on trial with QPR last week and Ross County this summer.

The Woking-born keeper came through the ranks at Reading but failed to break into the Royals’ first team before he was released at the end of last season. He has been capped by Scotland at U19 and U21 levels.

While at the Madejski Stadium 6ft 4in tall Henly spent time on loan at Aldershot, with whom he made six appearances in what’s now the Vanarama National League during 2013/14, Oxford United, where he failed to play a game, and Welling, where he made 26 starts and one sub appearance last season, again in the fifth tier.

Henly is likely to be viewed as potential cover for senior keepers Bartosz Bialkowski and Dean Gerken, while the addition of a third keeper - short-term signing Paddy Kenny having moved on at the end of last season - would allow Michael Crowe, 19, to go out on another loan spell, having spent time at Woking last season.

Would be good to send crowe out on loan to a league side rather than non league

We should invest some of Mings money on a new keeper, Bart & Gherks are solid, but prone to repeating the same errors. For me the GK position is the weakest at the club.

nothing wrong with non league... Think we will be found wanting, if we don't act more sensibly on our keeper front

I got excited when I saw that we were trialling a keeper as I have been hoping Mick would bring in a top 6 championship level keeper. But this young chap is a back-up keeper, so not what I think we need to complete our squad which is now looking good throughout if we can get the RB from Hearts. Of course, we were all hoping for Jonny Williams or a Scott Parker in midfield but with Douglas coming in, I dont expect any more midfielders and our strike force is formidable. A good stopper will complete the package imo.

Would be good for Crowe to go out on loan. Excellent.

However, I would be looking to sign a new number one! Bart is a number two, whilst Gerken has been very disappointing and for me is a number two/three keeper.

Does he play at RB then?

I think it's to early to judge Bart, he's had a season, now he needs to cut out the errors. I think he is a super keeper in many ways but ocassional decision making errors can cause problems. Nows he had time to adjust to the step up let's see.

Imagine if Utd had judged De Gea on his first season.

It would be good to get a top GK but I fear it's a case of
Nobody on the road, nobody on the beach, I can feel it in the air, the summer's [nearly] out of reach.

Will we still have contributors on here calling for Jonny Williams after he has retired, he was good when he was here but not so exceptional as to conttinue this call, hes accident prone also. Lets move on.

I don't know anything about this keeper, but judging by the fact that Phil has had to use a photo of the stand with this story, I'm guessing he hasn't been too prominent in his career thus far.
Crowe getting first team experience, on loan at a league club would be good news though.

Jas0999 I don't often disagree with you, but on this occasion I do. Bart is a more than able number 1 keeper at this level and is noticeably better than Gerken. Yes Bart had a dip in form after Xmas, the whole team did. Bart made some top saves towards the end of the season, against Bournemouth at home in the dying seconds and from that rat lansbury against Forest at home. He is a good keeper at this level

Bart and Gerken are perfectly adequate goalkeepers in this division. This chap as third choice is fine and further deepens the depth we have been adding to the squad

1 whole season of mistakes! how much longer.
goal keeper is our vunerable position. Niether of them command the box or give the back our any confidence, and the joke errors and misunderstandings of last season????
stick crowe in at number one i say.

Sounds like he has sat on the bench for a lot of the time of his career or been 3rd reserve. Not good for a 21 year old.

I can see the point of sending Crowe out for experience but I am surprised Reading aren't doing the same for this keeper. He is not going to get experience being our 3rd choice.

Jimmy86 - on this occasion we must agree to disagree!! But respect your opinion nonetheless. Enjoy the season.

C'mon we need somebody with a bit of experience and played at a fairly high level. Maybe a GK for the future but certainly wouldn't put him between the sticks when we trying for promotion (that's if there were injuries to both keepers)...still one of the weaker areas in our squad.

Keeping - that's where many of us (including me) most show our ignorance. I thought Alex McCarthy - also a Reading keeper - was really suspect when with Town. But he now seems to be widely regarded as a Premiership keeper, This is an important season for Bart and I feel he is well capable of making that step up after settling in last season.

I rate Bart, yes he had a bad patch, but he came through that - give him another chance!!
I also thought Alex McCarthy was awful, and despite the money been spent on him since I still haven't seen anything to change my mind!!

Interesting- BBC picks a best 11 players from all the ex players turned managers across the football league.

Mick didn't make the team....

They picked him for manager

What else do you lot expect. The Evans Corporation has already pocketed the Mings money and if you think a top class right back and central midfield player are coming before the end of the window you are living in cloud cuckoo land. And we DO need a top class keeper, one who is not going to make any mistakes unlike the two we have now

Bart and Gerken could both be top championship keepers if they weren't error prone

Wayway how the he'll can you accuse ME of pocketing the money. Just remind me how much does he have to fund to balance the books each season? Has been anything between 5 and £12m back in Keane and Jewell's day. Yes I wish we could invest more but am realistic enough to know financial limitations.
Would much rather be where we are compared to the few seasons pre Mick era.

A keeper that makes no mistakes does not exist
