McCarthy: We Let Them Off the Hook Twice
Saturday, 21st Nov 2015 18:18

Town boss Mick McCarthy was frustrated that his side let Wolves off the hook twice believing their performance was worthy of a victory rather than a 2-2 draw.

“It was an exciting game and it must have been great for any neutrals, but my assessment is that we should have won it,” McCarthy said.

“My assessment is that we’ve let them off the hook twice, getting in front twice and letting them back in the game twice.

“I thought we played very well today, I thought it was a really good performance and that’s what makes it even more frustrating that I’m sat here with a point instead of three."

He added: “I always take positives but I’m just sat here now, less than an hour after we’ve finished, and I’m not one who is going to come in here looking for positives all the time. I will when I get back in on Monday.

“I was asked what I think [about the game] so I’m giving you what I think. I know there were loads of positives, I thought we played really, really well today, some real attacking threats. But I’ve got a point when I think I should have had three.”

The Blues boss was disappointed with both Wolves goals: “I’m unhappy we conceded two goals.

“Certainly when the first one went in [we were comfortable], we had the ball at the edge of their box and it ended up as a corner kick and we didn’t defend the corner kick and it ended up as a goal. That’s not right."

The Town boss says his side lacked ruthlessness defensively, having taken two chances at the other end of the field.

“Scoring’s the hardest thing to do but we scored two of them so we’ve been pretty ruthless with that, I think,” he continued.

“But not ruthless enough in our box, which was something I said at half-time. We shouldn’t have conceded the second goal.

“I’m not going to elaborate on it, we shouldn’t have conceded the goals, that’s my view. My view when I discuss it with people on Monday is a different ball game.”

Regarding Benik Afobe’s 75th minute equaliser, he added: “If we’d scored it I’d be waxing lyrical about it because they’ve stuck it in the channel, good play by him, his movement in the box is good and it’s a really good finish.

“They will be saying how good it was, Kenny [Jackett] will be waxing lyrical about it, it’s got them a point. I’m quite the opposite because I think we should never have got to that position.”

McCarthy was pleased with his team’s first-half display in particular: “I thought we were excellent, I thought we played really well, some really attacking threats.

“You’re never going to play well for 90 minutes, I haven’t seen anybody do that yet, I’ve not seen Barcelona do that - where they have all the game and they just dominate and somebody doesn’t have chances. That’s always going to be the case.

“But I thought we played really well, I’m really pleased with the performance, disappointed with the result and disappointed with the goals we’ve conceded.”

McCarthy was pleased with the way his strikers linked up, although felt Brett Pitman was aiming to score himself when he put the ball over for Daryl Murphy’s goal: “He was probably going for goal, but if you shoot across goal you want somebody sliding in.

“Iorfa their full-back’s as quick as anything but if you let somebody get up the wrong side of you it’s going to cost you. So they’ll be bemoaning the goals we’ve scored as well.”

He added: “I think the performance has been good. I can’t elaborate any more. It was a good performance, it’s just a poor result from a good display.”

Wolves manager Kenny Jackett was happier with the draw, although was also frustrated by the goals his team conceded: “We’re pleased to have come from behind twice. It’s a tough place to come Ipswich and we’re not disappointed with a point.

“Having said that, the goals against for us were disappointing because we felt we limited a very strong Ipswich side to not many chances.

“But the quality and the character that we showed to come back twice was good and I thought when we went to two up front with Adam Le Fondre coming on it looked a very open game and we looked as likely to win it and had opportunities and chances on the break, while I don’t think necessarily we did enough overall to win the game.”

Defence cost us, yet again. Will continue until it's sorted

Clueless that's ownership directorship management and defence.

I just don't get it with the £££ on offer in the Prem next year.

Sad.

I do wonder when Mick will change our back 5 to a balanced unit ,the lads at Man u did very well. Smith and Berra are getting worse in terms of a partnership ,we lack a goal keeper in gherkin who cannot communicate or leave his line , chambers I'm fed up with as its just not the modern game having a centre half at full back ,knudson needs time to develop , he could be good ,but to play every game when he is making basic errors is wrong. Sears at left mid is a waste although he gives his heart to the team every game ,he should be central. Bru on the right when he is a central mid player just adds to all this imbalance. Its crazy.

We let them off the hook ????? The same back 5 who YOU pick game after game after game , no matter what mistakes they make let them off the hook. This is YOUR fault Mick. You continue to select a defence that is relegation material and expect to win games. You are deluded and we continue to struggle because of your pig headed stubbornness !!! No one to blame except yourself Mick !!!!!!!

We have a top of the table strike force, a mid to top midfield and a rock bottom defence. I have a lot of respect and applause for MM and what he has done since coming here but he must be the only man in this league, including fans, players and managers, who cannot recognise that our back five will concede goals to any kind of threat. Until he wises up to this fact, today's game will be typical for the rest of this season.

Still think there is nobody better out there than what we have MM ? Palace have 3 keepers all better than what we have , the difference between playoffs and mid table boredom

If we want a manager that will keep us safely in the Championship then McCarthy's the man for the job. If, however, we want a manager who will get us up into the Premiership then we need to start looking now.

I agree we have a good team let down by a defence and the worst goal keeper we have had since Lee Barrett & price. A keeper who controls his area would eliminate the defensive mistakes

You need to have a good keeper at this level. Gerken proved again today why we need better. Glued to his line for the goals. Poor. Defence isn't good enough, whilst balance of midfield, with two out of position, isn't promotion.

@surco, agree there isn't much better than McCarthy in championship, but let's not forget these are past achievements, achieved well over 3-4 seasons ago. It's all looking rather stale at present, may I suggest, a man void of new ideas, motivation, and energy.Has he taken us as far as he can? It's a worrying thought!
On a different subject, under Lambert, Blackburn will push up the league......it's all about dynamics, something sadly missing these days at Portman Rd!

...... When McCarthy walked in at Portman Rd, the place had an edge to it, players fighting for contracts and places in team, rather different from today, it's all too comfortable for my liking!

Walktheline. .. you have miss read or understood my post . During the week MM said we would not be adding with loans to our squad as there is no one better than what he has , I personally cannot believe there are no better back 5 players anywhere in the world that we could not get ?
As for Lambert I suggested him dome weeks ago when asked who could replace MM think he will do well

Living up in the Midlands ( but attending all matches ), I have a lot of friends who are Wolves fans / molineux season ticket holders and they have said since the beginning of Big Micks reign his downfall is his stubbornness and his desire to pick his favourites inspite of poor form. This is apparent now and sadly it is not going to change so I guess all that can be done is to get behind the team . Yes it is frustrating as a fan .the rewards are massive in the prem next year and Yorworth and Malarcyk were good at old Trafford so it isn't as though millions need to be spent . Try something different , it may work . Didn't someone once say that the definition of idiocy is when something goes wrong , do the same thing and expect a different result

Close wychyblue. It's the definition of madness. Whereas I don't think McCarthy is an idiot, I do happen to think he's probably mad.

It's time to try something new with our back 5. Its looking tired, slow and most importantly after 2 -and- a -bit seasons predicable. It's not that anyone is really BAD they are just a PREDICTABLE unit. People know exactly how to unlock them. I really think that it's time to rest a couple and give Parr and Malarczyk a run out.

....... the squad is very capable of much more - the HUGE problem is the imbalance of the team, caused by players playing out of position - not forgetting a Goalkeeper who is no nearer to being able to command his area, or take crosses, than he was when he first joined the Club.

So much for the so called Goalkeeper Coaching expertise, apparently at the Club........ !!!!

The above are elementary deficiencies that are present game after game, week after week - whilst continuing to cost us valuable points.
Absolutely unbelievable that MM refuses to do anything about it all - stubborness should NEVER be that resolute, and whilst present will ensure we remain a Championship Club, for ever, and a day .

Don't kid yourselves of anything more than just that.

Close your eyes and dream again MM that your defense and goalkeeper are doing a good job and different class because if you are not dreaming you must be bloody blind and stubborn.

We let them off the hook did we Mick? try I only have 1 point instead of 3 because I persist with the same defensive formation!!!!!!!!

Playing hoof all in the wind isn't entertaining . Also we have 2 decent centre halves out on loan 1 on the bench and 1 who plays at right back . We also have a right back who sits on the bench . We also have a goalkeeper who deals with crosses on the bench . Improving the team won't cost a penny.
