Charlton 0-3 Town - Match Report
Saturday, 28th Nov 2015 14:40

Daryl Murphy scored twice and Freddie Sears once as the Blues comfortably beat Charlton 3-0 to record their fourth successive victory at The Valley. Murphy put Town in front in the 28th minute, Sears added the second just before half-time and the Irish international sealed the three points on 68.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles returned at right midfield in place of the injured Kevin Bru in an otherwise unchanged Blues side with Freddie Sears again on the left of a 4-4-2 formation.

Winger Larsen Touré, a regular sub in recent weeks, also missed out due to a knock with U21s defender Joe Robinson, 19, on the bench for the senior side for the first time in a competitive match.

Charlton named an unchanged team including former Town loan keeper Stephen Henderson and one-time academy schoolboy Morgan Fox. Another ex-Blues academy youngster Nick Pope, a keeper who was released at 16, was amongst the subs.

The Addicks started on the front foot but hadn’t created an opportunity before the home fans staged their planned protest against the club’s owners with the vast majority holding up A4 cards bearing the legend ‘Stand up for the 2%’ for a minute after two minutes.

Ademola Lookman struck the game’s first shot from the edge of the area in the fourth minute but the ball hit a defender and deflected behind.

Town started to get more into the game and in the 11th minute they had their first shot, Henderson saving Brett Pitman’s low effort from the edge of the box.

Soon after, the Blues went even closer when Pitman crossed from the right and Daryl Murphy rose highest to nod just past the far post. As the Charlton keeper prepared to take the goalkick, Addicks skipper Johnnie Jackson was replaced by Chris Solly having picked up a knock.

The Blues had got themselves on top after making a slow start and on 16 Pitman twice almost conjured a chance with a couple of clever flicks at the near post from Jonas Knudsen’s cross from the left, but the ball was bundled behind.

From the resultant corner, Maitland-Niles’s kick reached Jonathan Douglas but his header, which looked to be on target, hit Sears, who was unable to get in a shot at goal.

Town continued to look the more dangerous side and on 18 Luke Chambers’s cross from deep on the right was deflected up in the air and reached Sears on the left, from where he hit a low volley which Henderson did well to get down to stop.

Referee Scott Duncan was the subject of Town protests in the 23rd minute when he stopped play with the Blues breaking to allow Johann Berg Gudmundsson to receive treatment after he was struck a painful blow in the groin by a Tareiq Holmes-Dennis shot.

Lookman shot wide in the 26th minute for Charlton but two minutes later the Blues went in front.

Charlton repeatedly failed to clear following a corner on the left, during which time Sears had forced Henderson into a save. Maitland-Niles returned the ball back into the area, Christophe Berra headed on to Tommy Smith, who while holding Solly off - illegally according to Charlton - nodded across goal and Murphy headed in his fifth goal in three games from close range to make it 1-0.

The lively Lookman got into a good position on the left of the area just before the half hour but Gerken came off his line sharply to block his shot.

Town, by now with Pitman playing deeper and Sears up front with Murphy in a system similar to Charlton’s diamond, weren’t too far away from a second in the 36th minute, Douglas just failing to get enough on his header from Murphy’s cross from the right.

Jordan Cousins headed Fox’s right-wing cross to Gerken a minute later but without testing the Blues keeper.

Deep in first-half injury time, Town doubled their advantage when Chambers played in Sears in space on the right of the area and the former Colchester man’s effort took a deflection before beating Henderson at his near post. It was Sears’s fifth goal of the season and his first for 10 league games.

Charlton threatened to pull a goal back in the remaining minutes of injury time through a goalmouth scramble following a corner with the danger eventually cleared via Berra and Smith headers.

Once the ball was cleared, Town broke away and Fox picked up the game’s first yellow card for pulling back Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

Soon after referee Duncan blew his whistle to end the first half with the Blues having put themselves in a good position to record their fourth successive win at The Valley.

Having started slowly, Town got on top and had created chances prior to Murphy’s goal. The second just before the break was a bonus with the Blues seemingly happy see the half out at that stage. Nevertheless, Sears fully deserved to get on the scoresheet given his excellent recent performances.

Charlton switched Fox for recently-signed former West Ham man Ricardo Vaz Te at half-time.

After Gerken had done well to claim a cross from the right under pressure, the Blues weren’t far away from making it 3-0, Murphy slamming Douglas’s lay-off on the edge of the box just past the post and off the stanchion in the 51st minute.

Two minutes later, Vaz Te, who had made an impression since coming on, hit a low strike through a crowd of players which Gerken saved down to his right.

Charlton striker Simon Makienok was booked for catching Berra with an elbow in the 64th minute, not the first time the Dane’s flailing arms had caught the Town centre-half in the face. The Scotland international lost a tooth in the incident.

Moments later Cole Skuse also took a blow to the face and suffered a nosebleed.

Chances had been rare at both ends since the break with the Blues generally happy to sit back on their lead and soak up whatever the home side were able to throw at them, which for the most part consisted of crosses which Gerken was able to claim or the Town defence clear unchallenged.

In the 68th minute the Blues made it 3-0. Pitman left a Chambers pass for Douglas, who fed Murphy in space to his left and the Irishman smashed in his second of the game and his sixth in three games off the post.

With Charlton looking a beaten side Murphy just failing to find Maitland-Niles with a cross from the left, then after Sears had won a corner, Berra heading over.

On 76 Pitman hit a 30-yard effort but too close to Henderson, who claimed. Three minutes later, Charlton went close to pulling a goal back when Reza Ghoochannejhad headed freekick back across the box and Gerken superbly blocked Patrick Bauer’s diving header.

Gerken made an even better save in the 81st minute, brilliantly getting down and across to his left to palm away Vaz Te’s goal-bound header. Three minutes later, Giles Coke replaced Maitland-Niles.

Vaz Te, by now wearing a pink bandage on his head, was thwarted by Gerken once more in the 87th minute. The striker hit a shot from the edge of the box and the Blues keeper again dived across to his left to save.

Tommy Oar took over from Sears moments before the fourth official indicated four additional minutes with the game already well won.

Holmes-Dennis headed a late opportunity wide but the Addicks had never looked like getting back into the game from the moment Murphy, who is firmly back to his best, put the Blues in front.

Sears’s second goal just before the break was a further blow to the home side and the third cemented the three points at a stage when Charlton weren’t looking like getting back into the game.

There was a late flurry of chances in the closing stages when Gerken made a succession of excellent saves, but overall it was probably the most comfortable of the Blues’ four successive wins at The Valley.

Town are now undefeated in six matches - having ended their winless run of Sky games at 11, their last live TV victory was the corresponding fixture last November - and are up to seventh ahead of this afternoon’s games, level on points with Birmingham in the final play-off place.

Don't usually get to watch Town live living where I do but that was very enjoyable. Particularly impressed with Niles' defending, Pitman and Murphy.

As MM has said it was teamwork...excellent today with Douglas, Maitland - Niles and the brilliant Sears covering every blade.
A goalkeeper who saved and defenders who defended ... And in Ollys words today's third goal as good as any team will score today!

Great stuff. Murphy was awesome, fantastic centre forward play very well assisted by Sears & Pitman. Midfield did their jobs breaking up any Charlton momentum, defensively sound though Vaz Te caused us more problems later in the game. Step up Dean Gerken, apart from a flap early doors, commanded his 6 yard box today & made two outstanding saves towards the end.
Fabulous move & finish for the 3rd goal, won,t see any better today. Great noise from the travelling fans. Well done all. COYFB,s.

We finally kicked a team when they were down! Great result. Fair play to Gerken's saves, he's winning me over a bit

Good away performance. We look much more comfortable and more direct when we go 4-3-3. Similar to last seasons guile, strength and hard working performances. That said, Charlton were very poor, up to when Vaz Te came on and Gerks made some great saves. Murphy, Douglas, Sears and Berra, were very good today.

Well I wonder how many team goals like Murphy's second have been scored by McCarthy promotion teams down the years. Mustn't get carried away, especially considering our indifferent form, niggling injuries and not making the most of pre-season (eg. Murphy over protected and then struggled for form). But there was a lot more playing on the ground and more positive intent. Jackson clattered early on - I don't like that sort of thing if it is deliberate (not the first time a 'danger man' has had to go off against us in last couple of seasons) but it does show toughness!

Why couldn't they do this three or four weeks back ? This team has proved very frustrating at times this season but this was another standout score that will greatly benefit our end of season finish. On paper alone it's a fine score, but reading various reports, the team were well deserving of maximum points and with it a solid performance and something to take into subsequent fixtures.

McCarthy is something of an enigma. Been so many times in the past year and a half that I've genuinely wished for his departure, only for the team to put on a show and come away with a result that supporters can take pride in. Only thing left to say, let's keep up the recent good work, get back into the promotion places - and do it right this time.

No club side has any divine right to be of top league status, but we've been in this championship division for far too long now. Maybe we won't make it back again by end of season, but results such as today will go a long way towards a much wanted objective.

Time to give credit to Management and Team. Knee jerk reactions usually end in disaster. So well done. Still need a specialist right back.

Very solid, workmanlike performance today - can't say that I rate Gerken as a top flight goalie but, fair's fair, today he was excellent and kept us in the game with some crack saves. Well done Town for a stoic performance and a well-earned 3 points.and Gerken my MOM. And as regards the third goal..you won't see better on Match of the Day tonight...

Good all round performance today from each and everyone of the players. Well done. Compete like that in the rest of the games and results should keep coming. Big difference when Murphy is on fire.

well done to the lads today and a special well done to Dean Gerken actually came for crosses and took one off an attackers head which on another day he would have stopped on his line and it would have been in the net so praise when praise is due also thought Berra did well against a brute and three points well deserved.

Solid enough performance, but if we couldn't have beaten Charlton today, we would have been abysmal. We'll need to play a lot better against Boro, and I think we will up our game. Today, we did just enough to win against an extremely poor side. Great away support. Fantastic to see what looked like a whole stand full of Tractor girls and boys. Bring on Boro!

Very good. After a quiet opening 10-15 minutes we sprang into life and dominated the game. Some ruthless finishing and defended pretty well. Overall a solid, pleasing performance and deserved victory. Well done to all.

How can anyone need to qualify the credit they give the team today??
Comments like "solid enough performance" and "why couldn't they do this four weeks ago?" Are back handed compliments IMO.
3-0 away in this league to anyone is an excellent result and on top of the result, some key players for us are regaining the form that we saw last season.
Stick with the team and the manager, they need and deserve our support. Yes, we may have drawn too many up to now, but we've not been beaten in many at all. The manager rightly sticks with the players and provides confidence to good players like Murph who he knew would turn it around. Some here we're calling for Murph to be dropped. That kind of knee jerk reaction leads to the situation that Charlton find themselves in with managers changing on a whim.
Great performance, great result, great 3 points away from home, onwards and upwards!

Fantastic away win again well done to all and especially the travelling supporters . Good to score 3 away and keep a clean sheet , thought Charlton were dire but still a very good win . Much better performance by Gerken especially with saves at end and Berra was back to his dominating best . Douglas and front three were causing them trouble all game and it looks like Murph is back . Only slight negative is still our right side of defence are beaten too easily and Skuse was again anonymous for me but a great 3 points

Curious how few posters there are here so far.

I too have been disappointed with results so far. Also with the way MM has selected and set up the team.

BUT, 2 consecutive wins before this away result. Then this. I listened to it on the radio. What I learnt from Mick mills is that MM was (perhaps rarely) tactically astute in matching the diamond that Charlton used.

He has been looking to use effectively Pitman, Sears, Murphy on the pitch at the same time in attacking roles. Today, I think for the first time, he accomplished that. With AMN. they were rotating - apparently - and so Sears was able to score up front.

This could be the wining formula that he can reproduce going forwards, allowing all these creative players to be on the pitch at the same tiime.

Professional away performance today, Charlton were there for the taking and we dispatched them well.
Very similar to last season where we were forced into playing 4-3-3 early in November and had 2 great months. Just hope we dont revert to 4-4-2 after Christmas like we did last year.
Even Gerken played well today, lets enjoy it, you dont get many days like today where everything falls into place nicely.

I am one of the first to criticise gerkins selection but I ate humble pie today. I predicted with our back five we would not keep a clean sheet. Humble pie has never tasted so good. Gerkin was outstanding and I don't think you will find a better goalkeeping performance in any other match today. Hats off to all the lads. If not for murphys hard work and goals I would have given MOM to Gerkin. Bring on boro. COYB.
