If Luke Varney could write Town’s end-of-season script it would see him score his first Portman Road goal en route to securing a play-off finish to the campaign.

The experienced striker, who initially joined on loan 13 months ago, has yet to break his scoring duck this season, having only returned to action in December after seven months sidelined with a torn achilles tendon.

Varney admitted: “It would be nice to get a goal because it’s long overdue, shall we say? Recently, I’ve had the one start and I’ve got on a couple of times as sub.

“I was happy to be involved with the goal when Pits scored a late winner against Reading but to get one of my own would be nice.”

Should he end his home drought tonight against former club Blackburn he does not think he will be able to stop himself from celebrating the occasion, adding: “I think I might even jump in among the Blackburn fans if that happens. I probably wouldn’t be able to hide my joy after the injury kept me out for so long.”

Varney, whose only Town goal came at Huddersfield last season, initially joined Blackburn on loan from Leeds in February 2014 before earning himself a one-year permanent deal and he had clocked up 26 appearances, including four starts, without scoring before joining Town.

He added: “I didn’t play a lot of football for Blackburn. I was backing up players like Jordan Rhodes and Rudy Gestede, who were scoring 20-plus goals per season, so it was obviously difficult.

“They’re a great club with great people and I’m looking forward to seeing a few old friends.

“I don’t feel I’ve got anything to prove to anyone because I understood my role when I went there.

“It will be nice to see some familiar faces but the main thing is that we get a win, which we need more than they do.

“People talk about Gestede and Rhodesy but Tom Cairney, who moved to Fulham last summer, was also a massive player for them.

“Everything went through Tom. I knew it would be a big loss for them and would affect the team.

“It’s a massive rebuilding job there for Paul Lambert but the money they got for Jordan will hopefully help them out.

“I hope they get back because they just missed out on a play-off place on the last day of the season [2013/14] when I was there.

“But with their squad and the infrastructure that’s in place they should be back in the Premier League. I’m sure they’ll get back there one day.

“They have a lot of loan players at Blackburn and they will be playing for contracts. Paul Lambert has brought players in that he knew from previous clubs and I’m sure they will be looking to stay.

“They will be giving everything they can. Blackburn might not seem to have a lot to play for but sometimes that can make them dangerous opponents and we saw it at Bolton last week. We are expecting another tough game.”

RaymondovicBlue added 12:02 - Mar 15 To be fair, with Murphy Pitt man and Sears all fit and hungry then Varney will be on for his goal creation not just scoring. Probably going to be a regular sub rather than starter. ... and of McGoldrick gets back then wet may not see that much of Varney unless Bru and Foley are injured? Really glad we gave him this year as he was injured playing well for us but not sure how many more years he'll have with Bishop back also ....one day...we hope. For now though .. let's hope we do indeed see him jumping into the Blackburn fans to celebrate our goalS. .. Mick is right...we NEED 6 points...so let's hope he really goes for it with selection and tactics. COYB
