McCarthy: Youngsters Will Have to Step Up Next Season
Monday, 18th Apr 2016 06:00

Town boss Mick McCarthy says youngsters such as Andre Dozzell will have to step up next season with the emergency loan provision no longer available.

FIFA have forced the Football League to scrap the system, which has allowed clubs to sign players on short-term loans of up to 93 days outside transfer windows, as it “affects the sporting integrity of the competitions”, much to McCarthy’s frustration.

He says that will mean that youngsters such as Dozzell, who made a goalscoring debut aged 16 years and 350 days on Saturday, will have to play their part and augment his senior squad.

“Whatever it takes, I’m going to have to use them," McCarthy said. "We go into next season with no emergency loans.

“People inside the club are already asking me how many players I think we’ll need, the other staff, scouts, the director of football, coaches.

“We’ve used about 18 players this season. Everybody will scream, ‘No. you’ve not, you’ve used 26 now with Dozzer', but we’ve had Tommy Oar, who had a bit part, Bish, who has had five minutes, Didzy, who made his first start [since October on Saturday], Piotr Malarczyk, who had 10 minutes at Nottingham Forest and not much more.

“If you go through the squad, there’s probably been a real, solid nucleus of 18 players. That’ll be the same and on top of that there’ll be Dozzell, Adam McDonnell, James Blanchfield, Josh Emmanuel, Myles Kenlock, who was on the bench today.

“Those boys are going to have to step up and become part of the squad and they’re going to have to be the ones who might get 10 minutes, two or three starts with a solid squad of 18 players.”

Emmanuel, 18, and Kenlock, 19, signed pro deals earlier in the season having made their senior debuts, 18-year-old Blanchfield, who is yet to make his senior bow, was recently offered pro terms.

McDonnell, 18, whose only first-team game came in the Capital One Cup at Doncaster, is understood to have had an option for a further season included in the two-year deal he signed with Town when he joined from Dublin side Shelbourne in the summer of 2014.

Also amongst the young players likely to be involved with the first team squad next season is midfielder Kundai Benyu who has spent much of this season out with a knee injury but has recently returned to action. The 18-year-old was on the bench for the first team last season, although without making his debut, and signed a pro deal.

Centre-half Matt Clarke, 19, could also make an impact at Portman Road having spent this season on loan with League Two Portsmouth.

Some of the young players cited by McCarthy are likely to be involved with the U21s against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane this afternoon (KO 1pm).

Midfielder Teddy Bishop, already an established member of the first-team squad at 19, has been pencilled in to play the full 90 minutes as he continues his comeback.

Having won three on the bounce, the U21s are up to sixth in their Professional Development League Two South table.

A few promising names mentioned hopeful for next season. Now await ' Mick will ruin them' comments. In reality though we have a top coach you only have to see what dozzell senior had to say about his son being in good hands. COYB

It's more the fact that MM actually does give our youngsters a go instead of buying 30+ ex wolves players. If they are good enough, then they are old enough.

I've been looking at some of the youth team games on the youtube channel and I like what I see with the quick 1 and 2 touch football so someone at this club knows how to coach the players to pass and move. I just hope it is allowed to flourish through to the first team and we get to see a few of our academy lads gracing Portman Road next season.

Maybe it's how the article has been written however I read that and get the impression McCarthy is reluctant to use our promising youngsters in the first team and he would rather have loan players. Prior to all this loaning of players we used to use our youth players that is what ITFC has always been about

In my opinion this is where our club fails,
Mick's style is direct we and he has been quite successful at this but our youngsters have been coached by the likes of Brian klug who has a different philosophy on how the game is played.

These lads are our only escape route from this league and they need to be managed well. Hopefully we will ultimately end up with 6 or 7 first team players from the academy

So does that mean MM isnt going to Villa? Well next season things need to change. Personally i am glad they are scrapping the emergency loan, will enable some of our own to get a game.

People have moaned about the lack of resources made available to MM, we all have but some more than others. I know the game has changed and itfc has changed, the thing is all the successful ipswich teams were built using our youths and not massive amounts of money or loan players. I just hope they are encouraged to keep playing the football they have been taught to play!

Very important point by bedsit. Dare we hope Mick might see the light and change just a little bit. Go on Mick take a chance get Marcus to break the bank and sign a footballing midfielder.

I don't think it's about Mick "seeing the light" but more a culmination if the Academy producing / developing players .

Klug said a few years ago that the plan is to have 50% of the 1st team coming through the Academy within 5 years. Looking after the players on the bring if the senior squad I'd say we're not far off.

Also players such as Clarke and Yowarth have had a season of competitive football and will be ready for step up next season.

I think next season with a couple of senior additions, will see a very much better team..and a lot more of them " one of our own" .

Having just renewed, I have to say that my heart sank when I read this. I really hope that when the youngsters can demonstrate that they actually can 'step up to the plate' that MM has the courage to play them. Please don't stick in the safety zone of playing the same 'safe' familiar faces which have made us so predictable and has cost us dear this season.

Excellent news and in some bizzard way this FIFA gives us some sort of plan that we really have never seen or heard of
Clarke and yerworth coming back will be great as our defense needs some better cover
Likewise Kenlock and Emmanuel can step up
I think it is positive but I am more curious how MM adds or cleans out some of the dead wood we are carrying
Would like to see Moncur come up the road for one and they can have coke Toure in return !

With this being the case isn't it about time we put in sufficient effort to get the academy up to Cat 1 level. We used to have a proud tradition of developing young talent and it would do supporter moral the world of good to see the academy being taken more seriously. It might just help the budget and the match day squad too.

Afcfee if we have a top coach at the club why doesn't MM let him train the team to play football instead of hoofball

Great news, I'd much prefer to see young and hungry talent given a deserved chance / break than bring in mediocre 30+ something loan players that are past their prime. Remember Stern John!!! :-( What is the point of having an academy if none of them get given a chance! Please bring out the young guns and give us something to get excited about!

Clarke and Smith next season cos
Douglas can do a tabby and work on his short game

Bert added 09:10 - Apr 18
Just remember that many very young players do not have the physique or muscle strength to play full games in the rough and tumble of this league. That's why the club has decent people to work with them and tell MM when they are ready but don't expect a full 90 minutes just yet!

paulcooperisgod added 09:17 - Apr 18
Step up for what? To be shipped out on loan and never seen again cos our dinosaur manager only picks his favourites? Bore off now MM give a young hungry manager the rest of this season and pre season to give us some hope next season. NO AMBITION

I think you've got to keep a sense of perspective.
i said a week ago we'll need the youngsters to bolster the squad next season.
They're the ones who should be replacing the Tabbs, Cokes etc.
We need to spend any money we get on true quality. If that means only two or three additions, so be it. The youngsters will fill the gaps.
Mick's not wrong, he will have a nucleus of 18 experienced players but if a Dozzell, for example, shines, I'm sure he'll play him like he did Bishop.
But let's be realistic, not every youngster will shine and they will be inconsistent.
Bishop wasn't effective in every game last season and Dozzell found the first 25 minutes of Saturday's match very difficult to adjust to.
We all want to see our youth academy come through but we won't challenge for promotion next season unless we have experience in the squad.

If managed appropriately and not all thrown in at the deep end this could be something brilliant. Of course we lose the ability to sign players like jonny Williams and Liam feeney on short term loans which we have used effectively in recent seasons. But this is a slight draw back for championship/lower league clubs. This will allow not only our club to develop its youngsters but also English football which is a far more promising plan for the national squad.
