Hyam: I Want to Stay Here For as Long as I Can
Wednesday, 11th May 2016 15:32

Ipswich-born midfielder Luke Hyam says he wants to stay with his hometown club for as long as possible, hopefully helping them into the Premier League along the way, having signed a new Town contract taking him up to the summer of 2018 with an option for a further season earlier today.

The 24-year-old’s previous deal was due to end this summer, although the Blues had indicated that they would be taking up an option of a further year prior to the agreement of the new terms.

“This is where I’ve always wanted to be since I was at a young age,” the former Northgate High School pupil told Ipswich Player HD.

“I support the club and I want to stay here as long as I possibly can and obviously it would be nice to help Ipswich get promoted into the Premier League.

“When your contract is up at the end of the season it’s always a worrying time because you never know what will happen and you don’t want to be looking for another club on a free, but it’s nice to get it done and dusted so I can focus on my football.

“I’m delighted to stay and with another two years under my belt it’s nice to have a bit of security.”

Hyam, who made his debut in the 3-1 win at Middlesbrough on the opening day of the 2010/11 season and established himself as a first-teamer under Roy Keane’s management before drifting out of the picture during Paul Jewell’s time as boss, says he’s been happy since Mick McCarthy took charge in November 2012.

“With the manager and the players that are here, it’s really enjoyable and I think the club has been on the up since the manager came in,” he added.

“When he came in he said he would get rid of the deadwood and he brings in players with the right personality that will fit in with the team spirit.

“The close-knit group of lads we have here is really good and it shows on the pitch. Obviously we haven’t performed as well as we would have liked recently, but hopefully we can push on next season and get to the play-offs or even get automatic promotion.”

I like him with proper coaching could turn into a very capable hard tackling defensive midfielder alongside Bishop and Dozzell. Just get rid of Douglas and Skuse no on field presence at all for defensive midfielders .
As Leicester have proved you don't need to spend a fortune just play the right way and coach individual players to become better .

I'm sorry but many people on here are swayed by this 'one of our own' nonsense. Let's be objective. He is very average. Sure he runs miles and gives his all but he has really limited ability. I think he's very very fortunate to pick up another two years with a championship club. We won't get promoted with the likes of Luke in our team

Who commenting on here actually watches the game from the side stands. Hyam is the energy that holds much of our game together. It's highly noticeable just what good work he does. He will never be a forty yard pass player but I'd have him in my team as first pick over even Skuse.

You need solid players in your squad who can be called upon when needed.

May as well be someone who gives a toss about the club.

I know quite a few people will minus me for this, but Hyam is a solid squad signing. Yes, he's similar to Skuse and Douglas...but he does give a bit more energy to midfield, tracks back well and actually supports this club.

We have lost a fair few players though, and this can hardly be said to be a new signing. This is "keeping what we've got". I do fully expect us to invest in the Summer in four or five new players to replace the seven or eight players we have lost. For me Feeney and Foley are both existing players so won't be new signings. We need a few new faces, and hopefully not just released players (which has been partly our strategy for the last two years).

Hyam was/is a good defensive midfielder, young with plenty of energy and bite, then we sign Skuse, older, more experienced who plays the same way. One to play, the other on the bench as neither carry a killer pass or goal threat. Perhaps our coaching staff needs to up their game?

There are a few rumours around about Harry Clarke moving on from Arsenal for a significant amount. Do you know if we would see any of this money? (If rumours are true)

PLayers all develop at various times but I have always felt he had ability - Look at Wes Morgan - 5 years ago he was getting run ragged by all and sundry - was a real workmanlike player - now he is a premiership winning captain who lead the team
Simple no nonsense - helped by Huth next to him
I would rather have Hyam than Douglas - I think Douglas will be like Tabb was this season
Playing golf
He was a liability - put a few decent midfielders around Hyam and some half decent defenders and let us see
Will he ever be a world beater , no , but I think he could be a great player to have in key games

I'm very pleased with this deal. It's been said before but you can never doubt his effort and determination on the pitch. I'm not saying the rest of the squad doesn't care about the club by any means but it's always good to have younger local guys in the squad because you need someone there is a fan of the club. Look at villa, they bought in a very good squad in the summer but they didn't put the effort in for their club, the same with Newcastle. And it's not looks local boy label that I think keeps him in the squad. He has the ability to both defend and push on a bit. He is a well rounded midfielder in my opinion just needs to really muckle down and get him self to the point where he's the first name on the team sheet. He can be the player we need in there with a creative partner

Smith got slated for years here - but he kept his head down, learned a lot and has been our most solid defender this year AND when playing on the wrong side to give the out of form Berra a chance to keep up on the left!

Hyam needs to do the same - to see this contract as a CHANCE to shine - not as a reward for what he has already achieved - he has more in there - he needs to step up and I'll support him as he does.

AGREE - Douglas should have only been given one year - as needed cover for Skuse when Hyam was injured. I agree that I hope Douglas only gets as much game time as Tabby did this year.

Has to be good news. There is no doubt he is capable of keeping skuse out of the side . He just needs to show this on a consistent level.

sotd78 absolute rubbish woop de do he has energy he's positionall 10 yards out of place in the first place, it's all well and good flying into tackles and people saying " go on son great passion shown " but if he was in the right place in the first place ala Skuse he wouldn't have to do this! Bang average player who along with Kevin Bru has absolutely zero positional awareness whatsoever.

I remember Bournemouth away last season, Hyam could have brought a player down on half way but chose not to six seconds later goal.

I don't as a rule comment on here even though I have supported Town from the 60s. Its nice to know the the town has more than one manager with MM being one, plus the other ones who know better than him and comment on here
