Town Facing Competition for Feeney
Saturday, 21st May 2016 10:05

Town are reportedly facing competition for ex-loanee Liam Feeney from Birmingham City and other Championship clubs. The 29-year-old is out of contract this summer having not been offered new terms by relegated Bolton Wanderers.

According to the Bolton News the Midlanders are among a number of other sides interested in the winger with wages said to be a sticking point in his negotiations with Town.

Speaking on the final day of the season, manager Mick McCarthy confirmed that the Blues were in talks with Feeney, who joined Town on loan in March and made seven starts and two sub appearances, scoring once, regarding a permanent deal.

“We’re talking to him and we’re talking to his agent,” he said. “I’d like him to stay and he would like to stay and if we can come to a mutually beneficial deal then that’s what will happen. If we don’t, then we won’t.”

Surely his wage demand can't be out of reach

By the sounds of it we're his favoured destination. Although you don't know whether or not his head will be turned by bigger money elsewhere if we can't compete

I'm not sure Birmingham are going to be able to offer him any more money than we will be offering, so hopefully he wants to come back having been with us.

Rumoured to be on £17K per week at Bolton. We are likely to offer between £5-10K. Others will offer considerably more. Is he worth such a high wage? Not in my opinion, but this will be a test of the clubs competitive nature in the transfer market.

The highest waged player we have at the moment is chambers at around £6,000 doubt feeny will get too much more than that.

He was on £17k a week at Bolton, that came out when Holdsworth was finalising the takeover.
Their wage bill was astronomical for a Championship club.
Perhaps now the people who didn't believe that at the time will revise their opinion that he was on £10k tops.
That's probably round about what Ipswich are offering now, with incentives.
Feeney won't want to take much of a cut but 12k would possibly be realistic.
Whether he's worth that, I'm not so sure.
I'd be looking at alternatives but the attraction of him is he won't command a fee.

Probably his agent trying to get him a better offer ..............not worth breaking the bank for , there must be better options out there

I can't see him commanding very high wages at any club, so he will need to be realistic. I thought he did fairly well during his loan period here, but nothing overly exciting and we all know how players' performances can dip once they have a security of a permanent contract.

For a similar level winger we'd have to pay 500,000 plus wages so if we can get him for 10k a week he's well worth it in my eyes

Not sure about this.
The figures that are being "quoted" here (is Chambo really our highest paid player at £6k a week !!!) would suggest we need to smash our current wage structure to secure him ........ & did he show enough to justify that & the potential disruption & demands others may then make ?
Not sure he showed me enough to justify that to be honest ....... now Ryan Fraser ......

Birmingham have got way more financial clout in the wage department and he could be swayed by that. It's hard to blame him if he goes. He obviously wants to play for us; but if another club is willing to pay him a few thousand more per week then it's going to be difficult for him to justify staying. He's a quality player and I certainly can't blame Birmingham for trying to pouch him off us.

He's allegedly on 17k a week?!

Jeeez.

ArnieM added 11:14 - May 21
he's no longer in the PL so can't expect PL level wages. He's not THAT good that we should break our wage structure.

One of the reasons Bolton were relegation fodder was that they paid over the odds wages-wise. If it's not sustainable then trouble looms.

Having said that, I'd be disappointed if we we weren't competitive.

Why hasn't Foley signed yet? Are Birmingham after him also?

How do some of you posters know how much these players earn! Is it just guess work.Players wages are never stated so don't guess it just makes stupid reading.

If we are going to break our current wage structure for a new player, it shouldn't be for Feeney.

tractorshark added 11:59 - May 21
Because it was revealed by Bolton themselves as part of the takeover process.
As for Ipswich, I don't know what we pay but I'd be very surprised if our highest earner is only on £6k a week.
Bearing in mind our wage bill keeps going up and we've dealt largely in free transfers, I'd suspect we're not bad payers.
I would've thought £10k a week would be closer to the mark, maybe £12k with incentives

Good player but there are other options out there surely if he doesn't sign!!

30 seconds of googling would suggest the posters are not guessing wages, they are using figures quoted from online articles.

not worth the money lets look elsewhere

As others have said. Not worth busting our structure over.
He started well but then drifted in and out me.
Anyway he will go where the best money is, just like most of us would.
