Murphy Again Unused Sub as Ireland Lose
Saturday, 18th Jun 2016 15:55

Town striker Daryl Murphy was again an unused sub as the Republic of Ireland were beaten 3-0 by Belgium in their second game at Euro 2016 in Bordeaux this afternoon.

The Belgians netted three times in the second half, Romelu Lukaku scoring twice and Axel Witsel once, to seal a comfortable victory.

Murphy, 33, will hope to finally make his tournament bow and pick up his 22nd full cap in the final game against Italy, who have already won the group, in Lille on Wednesday when Ireland, who drew 1-1 with Sweden in their opening match, need to win to progress to the knockout stage of the competition.

Murphy, other than the season before last, hasn't exactly been known as being a goal machine. So bringing him on to score isn't likely to be at the forefront of the managers mind. However, he would have added some much needed hustle and bustle.

I don't see the point him being there, better stay home and rest for new season, long was up top on his own and now was sticking, f you cant give him 10 mins at 3-0 down he will never play not worth his time even bothering.

Must say I saw more arguments for McGoldrick going rather than Murphy. Murphy is not that disimilar to Walters, apart from not being as good. McGoldrick would have at least brought some skill to the team, even if not goals.

To be honest I'm glad didsy didn't go, as he has a full end of season rest and full pre season which is good for us, we can miss murphy for start of season but not didsy

They preferred to bring on an ageing Robbie Keane.

If Murphy isn't the player to come on and score goals what is he supposed to be doing then? Seems like a pointless situation for both parties. Ireland seem like a bit of a shambles. The dark lord doing what he does best again no doubt!

Playing a 5foot 5 speed merchant up top on his own sums up a very stupid tactical management team. If its one up top then you need a player who can play with his back to goal ,hold it up and bring others in to the game. Murphy should of been given that chance.

I really hoped he'd get a shot when it went 1-0, Mcgeady and then Keane! Fair enough Keano but McGeady is nothing like his Celtic days. Shame as he would have helped them a lot today Murph.

@bluefeast, if you're referring to Shane Long he's 5 feet 11 inches

22 - 0..... it's not the strongest record.

Hope he gets a bit of time on pitch for next match against Italy,who as they are through might field a weakened side.

Hope to for Murphs sake that he scores as no goals in 22/23 matches is a very poor record for a striker,and if he does could give him a little boost when he eventually rejoins his club.
