No Surgery for McGoldrick But Pitman, Grant and Hyam All Miss Wolves
Monday, 15th Aug 2016 13:38

Town boss Mick McCarthy has revealed that striker David McGoldrick won’t require surgery on his ankle injury but still faces up to 10 weeks on the sidelines. Brett Pitman and Conor Grant are also unavailable for tomorrow’s game at Wolves, while Luke Hyam is out for three more weeks with his knee problem.

McGoldrick, 28, saw a specialist earlier today regarding the injury he suffered soon after coming on as a half-time sub against Stevenage last Tuesday.

“He doesn’t need an operation, he’ll wear a boot for three to four weeks to let it settle down so he can’t walk on it while it stabilises,” McCarthy said.

“He’ll have some sugar injections in it which helps the ligament heal and strengthen and tighten. And then he’ll be in his rehab.

“He’s probably eight weeks to 10 as opposed to 10 to 12 to 14. While it’s still bad news, it’s better news than it could have been. He’s not having an operation.”

The Blues manager says fellow frontman Pitman is still suffering with his thigh injury and won’t travel to Molineux: “Norwich at best. He’s not ready for tomorrow. He went out and did some training and he felt it slightly.

“So he stopped and we’re back to just getting him to where he doesn’t feel it at all. Fingers crossed he’s going to be ready and available for the Norwich game.”

He added: “Conor Grant has trained really well this morning and then he’s come off and he’s got a tight groin, so he’s not available for tomorrow night. We’re looking a bit bare, I have to be honest.”

McCarthy confirmed that last week’s re-signing Luke Varney will travel - “He’s in the squad” - but says Hyam remains out.

“He’s probably going to be out for another three weeks,” the Town boss continued. “He had nerve conduction tests and we’re just going to have to accept that we’re going to have leave him and hopefully it’ll settle down and he’ll be back.”

McCarthy says no new additions are imminent and played down suggestions that his presence at the Arsenal-Reading U23s game on Friday might mean there's a possibility of Ainsley Maitland-Niles returning for a second loan: “I’ve never had that discussion with him, so I wouldn’t know.”

So two games in, budgies on the horizon, we're looking a bit bare and McG is ONLY out for 10 weeks - all good then...

It just keeps getting worse and worse, never have I felt so underwhelmed for the forthcoming season. An owner who seems uninterested, and only contact with the manager is through the phone or on a golf course. A manager who has far too many favourites and loves square pegs in round holes, and finally players who are made of glass, or seem incapable of performing for 90 minutes.

Wonder if Dozzell may get a chance now.

How low do we have to go before something changes? Is it going to take a Paul Jewell type winless/losing streak before things change at PR? Mick you have had all summer to sort the squad out, but you have only managed a few underwhelming additions and haven't addressed any of last seasons problems. 4 injuries and the squad is looking a bit bare FFS?!

Why keep moaning at MM about lack of signings? Only one person responsible for this and that is ME.

" only managed a few underwhelming additions "

I forgot what a rubbish debut Ward played. Underwhelming to say the least. Should score 5 on debut. 3 is cack.

We'll play for the draw at Molineux, but I hope we give it a real go at home against the budgies thin on the ground or not. I think they'll miss the boy they've sold to Southampton more than they know.

As to starting Starting with Dozzell - OF COURSE WE SHOULD! Old enough to wear the shirt, old enough to play. Two games in, nothing to lose.

Keep the faith.

I don't think you need Nostradamus to predict a long slog of a season.

Douglas as an impact player when 2 down, words fail me.

Surprised he let Foley go in the summer, I've been away so I missed that one. Experienced player, ex-Wolves (of course!). It's got to be the financial restrictions he's working under, they're getting ever tighter and I hear the loan system is going to change this season too, making it harder for the teams with less money to spend now while the transfer window is still open. All this counts against us, as we have punched above our weight over the last two seasons - with a dire brand of football which has driven many supporters away. Lower season ticket sales + crowds = less money to keep existing players. He has to start to trust the young players who are starting to come through, as that is where what investment there is is starting to be made, and I do hope, beginning to bear fruit. Not just playing one or two youngsters as substitute when we are already losing. Start to build the team around them, yes risking a defeat or two. Saying ' we are a bit bare ' is surprising thing to say for someone with his experience. As if expecting sympathy in this league. We can get a result in the Wolves game, but stupid mistakes have be avoided for the whole 90 + 5 or 6 minutes. The other thing people don't realize is that top players do not want to join Ipswich Town. Ever since we thought we were in for the striker who ended up going to Burnley of all places, name escapes me - he then went to QPR, scored a hatful in the Premier League, and scored Southampton's winner at Old Trafford last season, off the bench.

Looking a bit bare! Football's a funny game only a few short weeks ago we were delighted with the three additions now a few injuries and we are a bit down. We need a bit of luck in our next few matches! COYB

At least the transfer window is still open just imagine if this was October, I can't see us spending anything though if we sign anyone it will be like varney who hasn't trained and not match fit.

The good news keeps on coming... :(

Think everyone needs a lift after the last week, 2 defeats and all these injuries. Hopefully the players can provide it tomorrow night!

Wasn't Conor Grant getting over an injury when he got to us? Perhaps playing 3 games in 8 days hasn't helped?

Wolves not the best time to bring in the youngsters as they are a really physical team but needs must I suppose.

Perhaps we should try Knudsen further forward and Smith or Kenlock at left back.

MM says 10 weeks, you can bet your testicles that we'll get to that point, and then Didsy will breakdown and need an operation. Defo information.

Not being funny, but yes, it's frustrating he is injured again, but come, lets not forget ho frustrating it must be for the man himself!!

It isn't just that we are playing Wolves tomorrow
Unfortunately we are going to the Dogs!!
Against Norwich on Sunday, we seriously have only a faint hope of achieving a result.

I'm already spitting "Fur and Feathers" where this club is
and the short sighted attitude of owner and management in addressing the areas
where we are clearly weak, and replacing over the hill crocks and aging players.

Whatever was the thinking in bringing in a "UNFIT" Varney back here?, it just highlights how badly ITFC is being run, by those making the decisions.

Good shout bluebell. Jk has good left and bringing on Kellock behind him could work. But then again we're talking about MM so expect Douglas to come in to lock up midfield!! Best outcome 0-0 by playing 631

Oh dear. Moaning about the squad looking a bit bare. We must be in January right? Surely not just three games and a little over a week in? Because correct me if I'm wrong, but we have just had a pre season. Ample time to build a squad which is big enough and packed full of quality to cover just three injuries. Only a badly run club, with an unambitious owner, would get rid of considerably more players than they sign. No club with ambitions of promotion would surely laughably sign just one player, leaving it until the last week of pre season before signing two more. Whatever sort of club would do that? Further, who would re sign players not up to scratch last season? Dear oh dear. Injuries is absolutely no excuse. Significant investment and an influx of players is now desperately required.
