Kightly Deal May Not Be Dead
Wednesday, 31st Aug 2016 14:03

Town’s move for Burnley winger Michael Kightly may not be as dead as previously believed, TWTD understands.

Yesterday, it had appeared the Blues had cooled on their interest in the 30-year-old with the Clarets having been unwilling to allow the former Grays Athletic, Wolves and Stoke man to depart until they had added to their own squad.

However, we understand that with the player and Town both keen for the move to go through Kightly could still be a Blues player before the transfer window closes at 11pm this evening.

On Sunday TWTD revealed that Kightly was being targeted by Town, while his Turf Moor team-mate Lukas Jutkiewicz was amongst the strikers Blues boss Mick McCarthy was eyeing.

However, the 27-year-old’s half-season loan to Birmingham City was confirmed earlier this morning.

Another player we understand to have been on McCarthy’s list of potential striker signings was 20-year-old West Ham striker Ashley Fletcher, although the interest doesn’t appear to have gone as far as a loan enquiry.

England U20 international Fletcher joined the Hammers from Manchester United last month having previously spent time on loan at Barnsley.

Town are close to confirming the signing of Crystal Palace’s Jonny Williams for a fourth loan spell, while further additions before the window closes have not been ruled out.

Elsewhere, Piotr Malarczyk, who left the Blues by mutual consent on Sunday, has completed his move back to Poland with Cracovia, signing a three-year deal.

Interesting. Had a feeling we may still get Kightly when I saw they were signing Jeff Hendrick this morning. Extra bodies are welcome and add options. If he's as good as he used to be he'll be a great signing. Still hoping for an exciting striker!

Kightly is available. I know for a fact he has been offered to Rotherham United. I don't think that will happen though.

A little underwhelmed I have to say. Was hoping due to the deal yesterday he wouldn't be arriving.

Don't see how Kightly fits into the 4-3-3 system.

"...may not be as dead as previously believed." :-) In other news, death no longer a binary state!

So we could be signing three players today then.
Williams on loan
Kightly loan or perm, not too sure.
And a striker

Our first team looks stronger already, but what we are doing is getting players in as squad players that could come in to the side without weakening us too much.

The Sears to Cardiff talk seems to have gathered some momentum. Hopefully just stuff and nonsense.

Phil, any idea who the mystery striker could be?

Hoping not.

But all depends on what MM want to play as formation.

If Williams is coming and with Lawrence added do we need this. If I recall he is right sided, left appears to be more of an issue for us.

Wow - we have about 28 midfielders - think a striker be good

As long as it's not another loan. No point of having too many more. Think of the future. We should also be spending fees after cashing in on our main asset.

My head is spinning after the last 36 hours & still another 2 signings are possible/likely before bedtime.
Grant Ward has already proven how important he is going to be for us this season & looks nailed on for a spot in our first XI.
Meanwhile Conor Grant looks as though he is a really cultured footballer and will give us a real presence and penetration on the left side of midfield. When fit we would expect to see him play also.
Now add in Tom Lawrence and Jonny Williams who are both at their best in an attacking midfield, playing off the forward(s), role.
Not forgetting our own Teddy Bishop, Andre Dozzell and even Kevin Bru, means there is going to be some real creativity, drive & depth available to our midfield whether Kightly joins or not.
With Sears, Pitman, Best & Varney already vying for the striker roles, and there might just be one due to how it looks like we will be lining out (Lawrence & Ward on either side of a centre forward) with our embarrassment of riches from midfield, it's hard to see where a new striker would fit in, especially with McGoldrick coming back in a couple of months.
Webster has plenty of improving to do, but I suppose that is to be expected when a young player steps up 2 divisions & tries to form an understanding with a new defence around him.
What all these signings (bar Varney) suggest though, is that Mick is really serious about changing the style of football we play, as they are all happy with the ball at their feet.
It's going to be an interesting couple of hours ahead & suddenly it looks like the season ahead is going to be interesting too.

no news of any interest in our squad then.. Time for a new leaf to turned over for all of them. Continuous improvement is the only trait to have

I know people are a bit worried by loans but with 3 mill in the bank, if they impress surely we could make moves for Lawrence and Williams permanent, rather that than another priskin, rather try before you buy, especially as players seem to like it here, get em in, earn their transfer rather than taking a punt on someone who is not worth the rare money we get to spend

Kings swap Smith in for berra and that is a solid looking team that is promotion worthy for sure!

A change of style and formation could develop what we've been trying this season into exciting attacking play with a solid defence!
