Town Ticket Prices Among Championship’s Highest
Wednesday, 16th Nov 2016 22:11

Town have the joint-highest-priced cheapest matchday ticket in the Championship, according to the BBC’s Price of Football survey for the current season, which has been released this evening.

The Blues’ lowest-priced adult seat purchased on the gate ahead of a game costs £30, as does the cheapest matchday ticket at Leeds.

Birmingham and Huddersfield have the cheapest adult matchday tickets in the division at £15, while Derby have seats at £17.50 and Blackburn, Cardiff and Nottingham Forest at £18.

The Blues' most expensive adult matchday ticket is the joint-sixth dearest at £40 along with Norwich City and Birmingham with Sheffield Wednesday (£49), Fulham (£45), Brighton and Leeds (£42), Bristol City (£41) dearer.

Town’s cheapest adult season ticket is the fourth highest-priced of Championship clubs' cheapest at £417 (if bought before the early bird deadline), 24 per cent above the league average, with only Norwich (£499.50), Brighton (£475) and Newcastle (£428) more expensive.

Sheffield Wednesday (£415) and QPR (£400) are the only other Championship clubs whose cheapest season ticket is over £400.

Wigan and Huddersfield have the lowest-priced cheapest season tickets at only £179, while the Latics’ dearest season ticket is only £229.

The Blues’ most expensive season ticket quoted in the survey, £842 (a small number of seats in an area on the halfway line), is the dearest ahead of Fulham’s £839 ticket, although the Town website shows other seats aimed at the corporate market at higher prices.

In terms of tickets for away fans, Town have the cheapest at £10, according to the survey, but also the joint-second most expensive away seat at £40 along with Norwich, with only Sheffield Wednesday’s priced higher at £42.

Further information on the Blues' prices can be found here, while details of ticket pricing, as well as the cost of tea, pies and replica kit, at 223 clubs across 23 leagues can be found here.

Commenting on the survey, Town media manager Steve Pearce said: “We have frozen matchday ticket prices for the last four years and our season ticket prices in that time have gone up by only 1.7 per cent on average.

"“We have maintained an under-11s season ticket price at just £10 for the last nine years, which compares favourably with any professional club in British football.

"“We have also introduced a ‘Pick 6/Pick 12’ match ticket bundle that provides a cheaper rate than buying tickets game by game.

"“As well as providing promotional offers to season ticket holders - these include saving money on additional match tickets - for the 2016/17 season we have introduced a new partnership scheme with local companies with season ticket holders able to get significant discounts on a range of goods and services.

"“Having said that, we are taking a detailed look at our whole ticket operation. This obviously includes pricing but also new initiatives, reward schemes for season ticket holders and how to cater for any increase in away fans looking to come to Portman Road.

“This is a big venture for us and significant discussions have already taken place. They will continue to take place and we will be canvassing opinions from supporters.”

One area I will not even begin to back the club on, prices are a disgrace for what we've had to endure for the past 15 years and what is currently on offer.
Of course they've got their usual crap excuses to justify, would love to know the uptake on that pick6/pick12.
You only have to look at attendances to see there's an issue, admittedly a lot stay away at present due to the football on offer but it's worsened when the price to watch it is ridiculous.
Put away pricing again is laughable for a club that for many is voted as the most awkward away day of the season

*insert typical 'Mick out' line here* haha

In all seriousness though, this is awful from the club especially how they try to justify what they do. Championship football at Portman road is no way near worth £40, not even if we miraculously win 5-0 (unless it's against the scum, then maybe).

£20-£25 maximum for adults in all seats would boost attendances. There is no way you can attract fans to turn up when you have to pay the high lest in the league for a team that is currently mid table!

I have not been to ITFC for 4 years now, i sacked them as the standard of football long ball hoof etc was not worth 10% of the fee. I am still a fan however with the current owners we are slowly driving fans away. Essex cricket costs me £410 a year for the lounge experience and you get coffee, biscuits, parking, programmes and players visits all for a lot lower that ITFC. Derek Bowden is one of the main figures at Essex and he is a big loss to ITFC. I hope the owners of ITFC wake up and realise they need to act. I will not come back to the ground at these prices as i have better value things to spend my cash on.

My work colleague ( who is a Newcastle supporter) told me today that he has bought tickets for the Forest game for two adults and 2 kids and it's cost him over £88 .
Hardy surprising the Club are missing a truck with enticing the "occassional" customer is. It's bloody outrageous what professional Club's charge fans now. And the football at most games is shyte anyway. Poor old state the English game is in now.

"Thanks" sky TV!

Don't really need a survey to know that our ticket prices are way too high and don't represent the quality of football on display. Our home attendances tell the truth

" In terms of tickets for away fans, Town have the cheapest at £10 - "

We certainly do not charge adult away fans £10 for any game, I dread to think where they have found that " information " from.

Also, SWFC lowest price on the gate is £33 so again this " article " doesn't seem to provide the facts.

In near total agreement with ArnieM. I've been to 19 Ipswich matches and seen us score 2 goals. To be fair, I've seen the opposition score a fair few goals but that's not the point. The entertainment level has been awful. I've seen people asleep in the grounds, arguments kicking off and some of the most shyte football I have ever seen. It's not entertainment. Football is in a sorry state and the gulf between Premier League and the rest is turning into a Canyon,

The worst part of this is that some loyal fans are starting to select their games for budget reasons and this is weening them off attending. With season tickets becoming too expensive there's only the option of which games can be attended. It's it's one/month then the most attractive opposition will get the crowds. However with the bland football on display there's little to encourage people to come back.

How many seasons in a row have we had to read this story and the same justifications from the club?

Marcus, I agree completely about having to select games. Due to the cost of travel+tickets, I now pick one game a season to go to - for the price of 2 games at Portman Road i got a season ticket for my local national league team - I'd love to get to more but simply can't justify spending that 20% of my disposable income getting to a game.

Tell us something we did not know
It`s a bloody disgrace
Considering the dross dished up over the last decade or about the same time as evans has been the owner it`s a testimony to the loyalty of the Town fans we still get decent crowds.

The evans ownership has been a disaster.

Watched one of the FA cup games and one of the non league teams had a huge screen at a cost of £20000 and a further 20k to support it and on a number of occasions this and last season our strip of a screen has been out of action.

I think what pisses me off most is £27.50 is far too expensive. yet you turn up on the match day they still have to bleed another £2.50 out of you !
I havent been to PR this season and i was a season ticket holder for years, but if you want to make a protest at high ticket prices my advise is to stay away.
Its no good buying a season ticket and not using it.

Jimmy86 added 06:44 - Nov 17
Bloody disgraceful if we're honest. Ipswich is not an affluent area and the prices charged do not help bring in bigger attendances, which would in turn boost the vouchers. It won't change, but the club need to seriously look at these prices.

WhoisJimmyJuan added 07:08 - Nov 17
I haven't been for a while now either because of the quality of football on offer. I agree with the above comments. What I want to know is whether this fleecing of fans is actually working financially too. If it is, how long before nor enough fans pay to go so they have to lower prices again?

Mark added 07:49 - Nov 17
I hear all the arguments the club makes about how they have analysed the prices and worked out that reducing prices would bring less income, but the fact is if we charge the highest prices in the table of 24 clubs yet have only the 15th best results and probably about the 23rd most entertaining performances, it is no surprise that fans are unhappy and walking away. I can see us dropping below 10,000 season ticket holders in the next year or two, which will be a sad day.

I think what we need to do with prices is freeze them for many years, scrap the silly £2.50 on-the-day extra fee, and have more promotions to get new people involved. BUT new visitors will only become fans if the football is good and they enjoy it, as even £27.50 is a lot of money when you compare that to going to the cinema, theatre, pub, restaurant etc.

Season tickets so expensive ?they have gone up 1.7% in 4 years. The problem is fans watching premiership football on TV expect the same style of play from Championship players unfortunately this is not going to happen.
The atmosphere at Portman Rd is toxic at the moment and until fans start getting behind the club things are not going to change.

Mirror all above comments. I only go to the odd first team game as price is far too high. My advice? Support the team from afar (like Benters has suggested). Go and watch the U23 team. Saw the team in October against Liverpool and it was 5 pounds. That's how much it should cost to get to see a 90 minute football match.

TV deals, Scouts, Agents Fees, Players Wages/Signing on Fees etc. It's got ridicoulous. It's sad to see Rugby gradually slipping that way too. The game is in a sorry state and is becoming a game for the rich.

Mark if we get anywhere need the playoffs or premiership you'll soon see 18k season tickets being sold and 26k attendance at games that's what a fickle bunch town fans are I'm affraid.

The sad thing is this is effectively a cut and paste news story - including ITFC's response - from last year, the year before that, the year before that...

The story is so,so predictable in its content and in the club's response, who trot out the same glib tripe year after year . I am sure, for example, that not a single supporter believes it is right to charge £2.50 for any supporters wishing to turn up on the day but they still will not drop this charge.

All very sad.

No respect for the fans, one bit!!

Surely, lower ticket pricing, would attract bigger gates, to actually accumulate more money - also making a much better atmosphere!! I would love to know how it compares to Prem teams, as we would still be in the top 10. Leicester charge cheaper than that for champions league games!!
