McCarthy Thrilled for Cresswell Friday, 18th Nov 2016 11:57 Town boss Mick McCarthy was "thrilled" to see former Blue Aaron Cresswell make his England debut in Tuesday’s 2-2 friendly draw with Spain at Wembley. Cresswell, 26, now with West Ham, came on as a 79th minute sub with Gareth Southgate’s side 2-0 in front and McCarthy says that while the left-back will have been delighted to make his international debut, he'll have been disappointed that his side didn’t win the game. “It’s always sad when you go on as a defender and it ends up being two-all,” he reflected. “I know how he’ll be feeling because I’d be feeling the same. “But I was really thrilled for him. I think he’s deserved that. He was outstanding here from the minute I walked in the door. “I remember him following the winger at Birmingham and nailing him and we went on and scored and won it, and that was purely and simply through him first and foremost pressing the ball and nicking it. “And he’s had a great time at West Ham, although it was sad that he got injured [earlier in the season]. I hope that’s a sign that he’s going to be in the squad for a long time.” Cresswell was with Town between 2011 and 2014, making 138 starts and scoring seven goals before moving on to the Hammers for an initial £3.75 million. That fee could ultimately rise to £7 million but with no clause relating to international appearances, which in any case usually only refer to competitive games rather than friendlies. All the top-ups are based on the former Tranmere defender’s West Ham appearances, the Blues having already received a substantial further cash with several of those milestones having been passed.
