Varney: Sending Off Worked Against Us
Monday, 12th Dec 2016 06:00

Town goalscorer Luke Varney agreed with manager Mick McCarthy that Cardiff having been reduced to 10 men following Sol Bamba’s red card worked against the Blues during Saturday’s 1-1 home draw with the Bluebirds.

Bamba, 31, was dismissed in the 70th minute following an extraordinary meltdown at a point in the game when Town were on top after Varney’s 52nd minute goal had restored parity after Aron Gunnarsson’s goal on 38 for the visitors.

“The sending off worked against us really because we were on a bit of a roll then but that slowed the game down,” Varney said. “It’s a shame because with a bit of quality we might have won the game.

“He really lost it though, at one point he came for me but I just said ‘It’s nothing to do with me’ and pointed at Douglas and said it was him.

“I saw him with the fourth official and we know you can’t go to the referee or anyone and have a go like that. He will have to pay the price with a punishment now.”

Reflecting on the match prior to Bamba's dismissal, he added: “The game had a bit of everything. We started well and had a couple of chances.

“Then we got hit by a goal out of nothing really. That seems to be an ongoing thing for us at the moment.

“Bart was player of the season last year, the best keeper in the Championship and I bet he will not be far of that this season.

“He made some excellent saves but unfortunately dropped one in the rain. We have nothing but admiration for Bart and that was just one of those unfortunate things.

“We had a good chat among ourselves at half-time and we came back to get a point out of the game, on another day we might have got more.

“It was almost more difficult for us once they went down to 10 men. I know what it is like, I have been on the other side of it when you get a bit of a siege mentality.”

Regarding his third goal of the season, his second in successive home games, the 34-year-old said: “To add to my tally is pleasing but I’m just concentrating on trying to help the team as much as possible.”

Despite the disappointment of not claiming the win, Varney hopes the Blues can build on the point at St Andrew’s in midweek.

“That is four points from two home games and we have another tough game at Birmingham on Tuesday,” he continued

“This is a difficult period with so many games. That said, I quite enjoy this time of year with so many games coming thick and fast because you can pick up points quickly and move up the table.

“This could prove to be a good point as we go away with confidence, whereas if we had lost it could have proved difficult.”

Meanwhile, Town’s U23s are in action away against Coventry City at the Alan Higgs Centre this afternoon (KO 1pm). With the first team in action on Tuesday few if any senior players are likely to be involved.

ignore this nonsense. it is just another example of the teams ineptitude under McCarthy.

Keep the e-mails flowing to the Marcus Evans group.

McCarthy OUT

No player should comment against a rare mistake by Bart, far and away our best player.

If we did that in relation to Chambers and McCarthy's other favourite proper blokes there would be nothing more to talk about.

Even McCarthy discarded Varney - his goal was a massive deflection. His runnning to McCarthy was pathetic

"He really lost it though, at one point he came for me but I just said "it's nothing to do with me" and pointed at Douglas and said it was him.

Doesn't sound like good team camaraderie to me....

Good to know they had a chat at halftime and decided to try and get a draw at home nothing like being positive at home!!!

Blah blah blah hopefully we can build on that result blah blah that draw will give us confidence blah blah.

I'm so bored of this constant stream of waffle. I've never felt such a disconnection from my football club.

And staying on the subject..... well I couldn't help but laughing out loud at this here truly clever constructed one (meme) I just recently came across, pussy(cat) & political related and all :-) lol:

PS: As for proper bloke "Reg" (Dino 's own cozy and ever sooo friendly term obviously!) ... well thumbs up to him really! As no only does he seems as a genuine likable fella but there is also reason to believe he could just bet his weeks' unluckier drawer of the dreaded 'short straw', speaking up more or less 'under duress' I imagine :-) ..... and as such the above article is just him being the latest Harbinger of ITFC orchestrated Public Relation & Damage Control (read: DRIVEL)!!!

Trouble with OUR club now to many excuses and words and the club's being run by everyone apart from the guy who's ment to be running it,

It will be ego milton next telling us what to think feel and how to act trying desperately to hold on to his very well paid job for not doing much, my mate at the club told me milton is evan's self appointed minder lol what a joke, non of the staff have any real love of OUR club they are just out for what they can get like free meals and sponsored car's and free golf day's ect.

Genius. It's a surprise at none of the top European managers are using this as a tactic. Getting a man sent off is the perfect way to grind out a result.

I'm hoping that Birmingham don't get two players sent off early in the game, they'll thrash us if that happens ...

Surely the critical point here is, why wait to late in the game to make more attackkng changes? Why not start with Bish/Williams and Sear (THROUGH THE MIDDLE). Cardiff, a team who can't buy a win away from home and we set up not to lose. I've always been a MM supporter, and I still have no clue who a replacement should be considering the lack of budget, but I am fast running out of patience.

best thing to do in that case would be get sent off Reg,then we will be down to ten and the other team will be stuffed SIMPLES ! Same script as your demented manager.Every week we get the same crap excuses, the others scored a world class goal, they this, they that, and at the end of the they this and they that its always same outcome ...WE DIDNT !,Ithink the fans could be spared the post match drivel having endured 90 mins of watching sh#te.The only statement most of want to hear now is that McCarthy has gone ,be it willingly or otherwise. WE JUST WANT TO HEAR ,,,,,Mick, YOUR FIRED !

Despite lifting Ipswich back into contention as possible playoff contenders on shoe string budget, Mick McCarthy had decided enough was enough and without the necessary backing he didn't feel he could take the club any further.

Last season when Douglas got sent off and we got a good beating from Brum , MM was all there is not much you can do against an extra player , now it is the other way round it also aided the opposition !!!
You couldn't make it up , excuse after excuse in reality we have won 6 games from 21 this season with the " best squad I have had at Town " says MM

And to think 16 years ago we were third in the league behind Utd and Arsenal after just beating Liverpool at Anfield , how far we have fallen is frightening

“It's a shame because with a bit of quality we might have won the game''. That quality, in the shape of Jonny Williams, was sitting on the bench throughout.
