Dundalk Full-Back Linked
Monday, 19th Dec 2016 10:50

Town are considering a January move for Dundalk right-back Sean Gannon, according to various reports.

The 25-year-old, who is out of contract and available on a free transfer in January, is said to have caught the eye when the Blues were running the rule over Dundalk winger Daryl Horgan during the Lilywhites' recent Europa League games.

Horgan agreed to join the other Lilywhites, Preston North End, last week with Town boss Mick McCarthy not having taken his interest any further than watching the recent Republic of Ireland call-up.

Dubliner Gannon played youth football with St Kevin’s Boys, then started his senior career with Shamrock Rovers before moving on to St Patrick’s Athletic and then joining Dundalk at the end of the 2013 season.

The 6ft tall full-back has been named in the PFAI Premier Division Team of the Year in each of the last three seasons in which Dundalk have carried off the SSE Airtricity Premier Division title, having also played for St Patrick's when they were champions in 2013 and been part of the winning Shamrock Rovers squad in 2011.

A right-back wouldn’t appear to be one of McCarthy’s January priorities with the Blues boss having said he is happy with skipper Luke Chambers as his regular starter in the role and 19-year-old Josh Emmanuel as his deputy.

Sitting on Josh's knee on the bench should keep them both warm ??

HAPPY CHRISTMAS ALL

God bless!

Oh come on, its not April fools, he's a right back, we haven't had one of those for at least 7 or 8 years, so absolutely no chance.

Horgan was considered the stand-out star of Dundalk and interest was very high (PNE fought hard to get him and with reason). Bradford City tried to sign Horgan but were also interested in Gannon at the time so could have competition for his signature. Saw Tranmere Rovers also interested in Gannon but I doubt they would be able to compete wage wise.

Probably all just rumour anyway.....

Webster to Sunderland. Chambers to Centre Back. Gannon in as right back. It all makes sense now.

It wont happen, this is just shop talk, when you have a manager who's happy to have a slow turning centre half as right back say's it all, we need a new manager for Christmas pronto, and an invisible owner who needs to sell up to a more caring consortium, who will respect the fans an not take the p**s all the time

He could be the next Cafu and still wouldn't take Chambers out the side.

martin587 "Marcus, open your purse or get rid of MM".So,your boss denies you any money to spend but you do the best you can but business falls away and your boss sacks you! I'm all for MM getting slated for incorrect team selection and poor tactics if that's your view. However,if ME wants to keep his money in the safe, how can that be MM's fault and,in turn, cost him his job?Respect to MM for putting up with a budget of two washers and a bottle top, year on year.

A good player that has played very well in European competition this season. He doesnt look out of place at that level. Would be a very capable Championship player and a good signing for us. Its a squad game and the more quality, experienced players we have fighting for positions the better.
At 25 and considering his experience and Ireland prospects, he would be looking for assurances for a first team spot, not to sit behind Chambo and duke it out with Josh for the bench.

As some said earlier, if Berra or Webster move on and Chambo moves to CB than it would make sense.

Now I don't want to get peoples hopes up but I've heard a rumour that MM will hand in his notice if ME sells any more promising youngsters.
Wouldn't that be tragic ! Go on Mick show some backbone put your foot down........please.

Chambers will never be shifted from right back, however badly he plays. Ask Emmanuel. If Kyle Walker was our player he'd stand no chance winning the position from Chambers.

A right-back wouldn't appear to be one of McCarthy's January priorities... And that's probably the main reason I want him gone.

The most exciting football Ireland ever played was with Mick McCarthy as manager back in the early naughties, that was a real top team with genuine flair players and flying full backs. Plus Matty Holland was in the middle of the park! In fact this was around the same time we saw the most exciting Ipswich town team in recent decades! I miss Mat Holland :(
