Warnock Confirms Huws Took Pay Cut to Join Town
Friday, 3rd Feb 2017 13:07

Cardiff boss Neil Warnock has confirmed reports that new Blues loanee Emyr Huws took a pay cut to join Town on deadline day. The 23-year-old Wales international will be at Portman Road for the remainder of the season.

“[Huws has] not had a look in, he’s a lovely lad, it shows how much he wanted to play because he’s paying some of own wages,” Warnock said, speaking at a press conference earlier today. “It’s unheard of for me, so it shows how much he wanted [to play].”

Warnock was initially keen to sign a Town player in a swap deal, almost certainly out-of-favour striker Leon Best, who played for him at Rotherham last season, but the former Ireland international has a groin injury which requires surgery.

"There aren't many lads like Emyr," Warnock added. "He came to see me and said he'd take a drop in wages to play. How many people say that, everybody just wants to stay put normally. He wanted to go. I was going to do a swap and unfortunately the player I wanted to swap was injured.

"I didn't want to stop him and Mick's a great pal of mine. I thought it'd give them another body really."

Huws played youth football with Swansea and then Manchester City, where he made one senior sub appearance.

While with City he spent time on loan at Northampton, Birmingham and Wigan before joining the Latics on a permanent basis in 2014.

A spell on loan at Huddersfield followed last season before he moved to the Bluebirds on a permanent basis last summer signing a three-year deal but has made only two starts and two sub appearances.

Huws has been capped 10 times by Wales at full level, scoring one goal, in addition to appearances for the U17s, U19s and U21s.

Speaking about the Llanelli-born midfielder yesterday, Town manager Mick McCarthy said: “Emyr Huws is a player of a real quality and he was of real promise when he was at Manchester City and he’s had a number of loan deals.

“He went to Cardiff and Neil Warnock picked and prepared his first team when Emyr was away on international duty and they’ve done all right since and he’s never got back in. He’s trained today and he’s trained really well.”

Former Blues midfielder Lee Martin was understood to have similarly taken a pay cut when he move to Charlton on loan at the start of the 2010/11 season.

Sort of player we need if he does well he should be paid it all back at the end of the season.

But it does show why we cant get anyone to come to Portman road ;-(

How much must Cardiff have been paying him? Or are we really that incredibly tight?!

Hardly surprising but it does explain why we didn't even come close to bringing a 'million pound plus' striker in permanently..

Can we just give them Leon Best anyway? I'll drive him over

With a regular run of games and desire to play I think he could be a decent signing for us.

And people wonder why McCarthy just brought in freebies and non-league players. No ambition from the owner. So much for investing the Murphy money. In fact, what happened to the Cresswell and Mings money?

It's difficult to watch McCarthy sides when he's backed by the owner, when he's forced into the bargain basement it only makes it worse. McCarthy's role now is to be a useful scapegoat and take the pressure of the owner.

I reckon warnock wanted to swap huws for a top quality midfielder. Unfortunately Giles Coke is still injured so he has to do without

All credit to the lad for wanting to play football & not just looking for the biggest pay packet.
Refreshing to hear in the current climate of greed amongst jumped up prima donnas.
Welcome to Town, might just be the hidden gem?

We can't or won't compete with any other team in this division and properly most of league one when it comes to wages, we were meant to sign Liam feeney on a free but Blackburn offered more than twice the wages we were offering, luke varney went to burton because the wages offered were far better than we offered to pay, both teams below us but can still out pay us.

Wow! We are getting pity from Cardiff now. 'I just thought I'd give them another body' what a sad state of affairs.

Why are people so bloody negative, how many of you would take a put cut to play for another team so this guys passion and commitment so get behind the lad and you might be surprised. Clips of him playing for Wales are impressive if he can do that in a Town shirt who knows.

The wage cut has nothing to do with what we pay. At the end of the day while he's on loan At a club he's entitled to whatever wage he is on at his parent club. This is I expect more a case of a dispute on which club paid which percentage of his wages and he's did he's take a cut to make that easier to sort out. Plus to those who just seen to want

Plus to those who seem to justvwantvto slag the club off for the sake of it, our wage bill is among the highest in the division.

We have actually got some quality players, and now some players with physical presence in the squad. If only Mick can pick the best formation, and would be willing to drop out of form players, ( am thinking Berra, Knudsen, Ward, Sears).

Some pretty impressive Lawrence style goals from this lad on you tube. Just the one international goal (against Holland). On Tueasday night I didn't see too many players who looked like they wanted to be playing for us, but this lad is prepared to take a pay cut to do it. I say we get behind him, make him feel at home here. God knows we need some positive purpose.

The out of form player who needs dropping is skuse ArnieM. This lad will show us all what a midfielder should be all about.

So we can't even compete with Cardiff on the wages front then? Didn't Evans once say the reason we don't pay transfer fees was because we over index on wages?

And s for the video with the lad saying 5 and 1/2 hours to drive here, what did he leave the handbrake on? I just did the same journey in just over 4 hours (no speeding either)!

It's not good that he is taking a pay cut. I don't like to see that, even if it does show how much he wants to play for us. Good on him, but Evans should be ashamed. Shows how far we are behind other clubs when it comes to being competitive.

You heard it from Mick himself. The owner spent a lot, got nothing, then spent nothing and got a lot. Which sounds better? Unfortunately, for whatever reason, it's not happening this season and something has obviously got to change. I've read between the (thin) lines from Mick's interviews. He's not happy with having peanuts to spend, the players aren't happy with having peanuts to play with. Evans is obviously finding the ropes with this business, but boy is it painful for us to endure this crap.

There seems to be a lot of contradictions going around
According to Mr Milne our players wages are in the top quartile for this division.
If I am not mistaken then this means we are one of the top 6 payers (24 teams).
However as a lot of people are commenting we do not seem to be able to compete when trying to sign players.
Does this mean that some or perhaps most of the senior players at the club, including the manager and his staff are paid far more than we may think. Ho one wants our players (not only as they are not performing) but possibly it is because no one can afford them. This may also be the real reason why Evans cannot afford to sack McCarthy now as he will need to pay him and his entourage 18 month money and also his successor and his staff too.
This is just a thought, bearing in mind the mixed messages we are receiving.
btw, the 7 players that have joined us this January will cost us in the region of nearly £2m (if they are only paid an average of £5k a week) and I expect Taylor, Diagouraga or Huws are paid far more than that.
Let us hope they all get some game time and show us they are worth it.

Can we swap McCarthy for Warnock?
