Milne: Massive Rebuilding Over the Summer
Sunday, 30th Apr 2017 19:45

Managing director Ian Milne believes there’s got to be “some massive rebuilding” at Town over the summer with owner Marcus Evans and manager Mick McCarthy having held their first meeting to discuss their plans for the 2017/18 season.

“Marcus has indicated and we’re indicating that there’s got to be some massive rebuilding over the summer and that’s starting, there’ll be more after the end of the season so they’ve started looking at the options,” he told Saturday’s Life’s a Pitch on BBC Radio Suffolk (47mins 00secs).

“There are loan players that I think we’d all like to keep, so they’ll be working on that. It’s always difficult to say precisely who is going to be here because it’s up to the players, they will have other offers, there will be some players who may go because they’ve got a better offer somewhere else.”

Does this rebuilding mean Evans will be spending some money? “He continues to spend a lot of money, £6 million or £7 million a year. I know fans want more spent but we all have budgets we have to cope with.

“As we’ve said before that squad, the basic squad is good as it proved against Newcastle, but it keeps going up and down, that’s our problem. We had bad day at Rotherham, which was very upsetting. Marcus was there and he knew our thoughts.”

Milne confirmed that McCarthy and Evans met last weekend to get their summer discussions under way: “They did, they had a good meeting, but it was the start of many.”

The MD says Evans is well aware that significantly more money is now being spent elsewhere in the division than was the case in previous seasons.

“He fully understands that,” he added. “At the moment he doesn’t know how much he’s going to spend because we don’t know who’s coming in and going out. But I’ve got no feeling that he’s going to spend less and hopefully he’ll spend more.”

Having said in January that he would make a decision on his future in the summer, McCarthy has more recently stated his intention to remain at Portman Road.

Asked whether McCarthy would still be in charge at Town next year, Milne added: “That’s a question we’re going to have to wait [to hear the answer to]. He’s got another year on his contract, I have no further news on that at the moment.

“At the moment he’s here, he’s going to continue for the season and we’ll see what he says.”

Milne isn’t yet sure when Town will announce their matchday prices and says the club have been discussing more flexible ticketing arrangements.

“Not at the moment, we’ve got a review with Marcus to go through that,” he said. “We want to get that right.

“Basically, it’s around the idea that we’ve got to understand that people’s lifestyles have changed and maybe they can’t come to every match and they want to pick and choose which matches they want to come to.

“I’m not a golfer myself, but they tell me golf club memberships are difficult to sell now because people don’t have that time every week to go and play.

“The same with us, they can’t come to every match, so I think we’ve got to give more options on that and that’s what we’re working on.”

Season ticket numbers are expected to dip to just below 10,000 for the first time since the Blues’ stint in the Premier League at the start of the century - a drop in revenue of more than £1 million - and Milne says the precise total sold before the recent early bird deadline should be known soon.

“We’re processing those at the moment, the DDs [Direct Debits], so we will be coming up with that shortly,” he continued.

“It’s lower than last year but I don’t know the actual figure at the moment. But we’ll come out with that shortly. Of course it is lower, we understand that because of the entertaining football issue.”

Regarding the new kits for the 2017/18 season which are yet to be unveiled, he said: “I think we’re a bit later this year, part of it is because of Adidas and the marketing.”

Milne expects the home strip to go down well with supporters: “I’ve seen it and it’s traditional and I think fans will love it.”

Where has Milne been? More spin. Focussing on Newcastle. Ignoring the rubbish. This nonsence that Evans puts lots of money in is just that. Unless the owner can invest significantly in the playing squad, we are going nowhere. The fact the owner supports MM is remarkable. Shocking.

It's time to cancel season ticket ... Sadly.

Rebuilding? As usual these planks will sit back and see what players get better offers elsewhere! How proactive! Therefore we are safe to assume our club again will not be competitive!
Evans continues to pump 6-7 million into club! Don't expect anything else or more, better still ,acknowledge his Lordship, our saviour, messiah blah blah blah!
Dear Rotherham United, please excuse us, but McCarthy needs your 'better' players next season, you know, the one's who helped you finish the season in strong position 24th!
Tony Blair once said 'things can only get better '....we all know how that ended!

The money Evans pays as sponsor should not be included in his £6 million as this could be gained elsewhere , with the fees we have received for players far out weigh what we have spent , wages are like for like with players leaving , our squad is no bigger now than it has been so more rubbish from the club . The biggest thing to get more ticket sales would be getting rid of MM as 5 would be purchased here straight away

I can handle not much money being spent, I think good quality players are available at decent prices you just have to find them, i have no issues with that philosophy whatsoever -
what i can't handle is lining up with 3 defensive midfielders at home to Rotherham, setting up for draws and being so so negative it bores me to the point where i'd rather pluck my balls with a rusty pair of tweezers than go to a game.

I could also do without being told Jonathan Douglas is 'different class' Cole Skuse is 'Premier league standard' and Dean Gerken is 'fantastic' along with pretty much anything Ian Milne says on the subject of spending money on transfers because, frankly actions speak louder than words and i'm only likely to believe any of the above if i'd been heavily sedated.

I wish they would stop talking about things and just bloody well get them done

I have an idea how to raise attendance Mr Milne, sack the dinosaur and get someone in that can coach a team that can pass a ball and doesn't play with 7 defensive players... just a suggestion but what do I know.

It was hard to suppress a cynical smirk when I read the "massive investment" phrase in the above headline as we have been here before under the present owner, not least at the beginning of last January. That striker never did materialize.

I reckon that we will have a firm idea how the coming season will pan out by the end of this July and before a ball has been kicked in anger. I hope I am wrong but must confess that I'm not holding my breath

More BS. Evans has invested approx net £Nil over last 2/3 seasons. Presume interviewer has no balls to pull him up on this.

I really don't care how much "rebuilding" is done, because until that foul-motor mouthed, arrogant, self obsessed idiot has left our club, I wont be returning to Portman Road, end off.....

I'm sorry but the club has been nothing but a joke since Evans took over, I can see he thought we were a sleeping giant but his decision making on management has been nothing short of farcical. Taking a punt on a young and upcoming manager is a huge risk and all other managers have been a bit of a joke to be honest especially the Dark Lord!!!!
I wish I thought Milne meant his words, but I fear the same sh*t, different season next year. The fans deserve better.

'The basis of the squad is good'. What planet is he on? 45 games do not lie! 1 good result against Newcastle? Please get real! Evans has no feeling for the club or no understanding of the true meaning of football culture. McCarthty is arrogant in the extreme and well past his sell by date. Sorry while the current regime is in place then it downhill all the way!!! Oh the new strip will make all the difference!!!!

I actually feel sorry for Milne, I hope he gets paid well because being the fall guy for Evans is not worth a triple lottery win in my opinion! He is either very rich, very brave or very stupid?

They know exactly how many ST's have been renewed, they just don't want to admit how poor the total is.
If you consider that theyve been claiming 15,000 have been there all season when there's only really been about 13,000, that's 2,000 ST holders per game not showing up, probably on a rotational basis so it's more likely to be 2,500 who have picked and chose their games to attend.
If they all cancel plus about another 1,000 the total will be about 8,000. Add away fans and match day sales and they will be lucky to be running out infront of 10,000 every single game.
It's a mess, a huge mess and the only way they will get those people back me included would be to sack MM, and give the job to a young manager with a footballing philosophy, they then need to extend the early bird deadline.
If they don't then I can only see us doing a Coventry next season

While this article obviously mostly evolves around 'Immaculate Ian's' latest conceivable Public Relation AZzz STUNT! :-), my post here is actually more of a carry-on or carry-over from the 'Bart POTYA' article's mind-boggling MM related contains ... and thus predominantly specially directed to our very own prehistoric museums-ready Dino :-) who imho completely indefensible at this very date & at this very hour is still holding the job as our once proud & revered football club's manager:

"Dearest" Mick
By complete chance I just earlier this evening had myself a little phone-chat with a dear literally & seriously OLD friend of mine which just happens to also be a genuine (former) amateur football historian (In fact back in the 90's when I saw him or talked to him regularly me & my homiez use to refer to him as our very own around-the-corner oddballing 'Walking Talking Football Encyclopedia! lol) .... so as our otherwise private conversation was drawing to an end I simply couldn't help or restrain myself from posing him this very "hot" locally in Suffolk related pair of football question:

1) Could he possibly recall ANY other supposedly top professional (i.e. minimally in tier 1 or tier 2) team manager here in the UK or abroad for that matter who previously while officially still holding his job position had referred in public to his own club's so very existential fans as: "F@CKERS"???

2) Could he possibly recall ANY other supposedly top professional (i.e. minimally in tier 1 or tier 2) team manager here in the UK or abroad for that matter who previously while officially still holding his job position had proclaimed in public (as MM just very 'delicately' did at the Supporters Club's Player of the Year Award): "I will be back here next year, even if that's **JUST TO** annoy the people who don't like me!!!"

Deep within I had really really hoped he would come up with some wildly obscure & little known Pre WW2 or even Pre WW1 example(s) ... but not too surprisingly he was actually first clearly **speechless** for several seconds -- exactly like so many of us ITFC fans probably were when first we heard about these Dino statements -- before semi-jokingly asking me how many real seconds on the proverbial egg-timer he had to rumage through his old memory bank (a la in 'Jeopardy' or 'Who wants to be a Milionaire' etc.) ... before he about a minute later eventually declared he was utterly & complete blank = NOOOOO such precedents that he himself could recall!

Now this here little cutish personal tale & test quite obviously doesn't exclude that there really has been any such precedents among said 'Supposedly top professional team managers' (my friend here is real old as I said and by no means what I would call an 'All Knowing' entity particularly at this real advanced stage of his life) but somehow with all that I myself have ,seen ,heard, read & otherwise know about the game of football I personally strongly doubt it! ... meaning that UNTIL I learn otherwise then : Congratulation Master Mick! You have just twice now in this month alone made extreme NEGATIVE football history!!!

Soooo ehmm how do you (and ME!) feel about exactly this here above-mentioned and particular latest ultra disrespectful behavior towards this club's fans or if you prefer: SIZABLE "chink in the Dino's armor" Mr. Milne, you wunderschön equal part clueless equal part deluded "Snake Oil Salesman Extraordinaire"??? LMAO!

Ohhh and Mick "dearest" here is a mucho interesting book I very very very very much recommend you read during the off-season, especially IF you really do return to work "as normal & and as if nothing ever happened" lol here at ITFC once the summer holiday period is over .... Why you might ask??? Well your ultra luuuuvable self-perceive genius ehmmm considering that very latest unmistakable '2-fingers-up' at us the very existential to the club ITFC fans i.e. the beyond nice "I will be back! Even if that's just to **ANNOY** the people who don't like me!", the very title of book itself should hopefully make it crystal clear as to why I (and probably **THOUSANDS** of other of our fed-up fans) could easily find it to be so recommendable reading for your special dinosauric eyes:

:-) :( :-) :(

Wow, the entire interview suggests a MD who doesn't have much of a clue regarding any aspect of the club. Doesn't know the level of future finance available , doesn't know how many season tickets have been sold, and apparently addidas dictate to their paying customers rather than the other way round! Hasn't exactly got his finger on the pulse has he?

Part of any rebuilding is having the materials to do it with, and usually people who know what to do with those materials. At the moment we have neither.

Our club would make a for a perfect episode of 'Rogue Builders' (if not Laurel and Hardy) with Evans being the elusive 'builder' trying to dodge the cameras.

Evans, Milne & McCarthy Builders and General Bodgers

Simply the (Leon) Best

Looking at 'ticket pricing' - why do I get the feeling that season ticket holders will regret renewing ? Why do I get the feeling that the Club will treat them with contempt now they have committed ?
