Garner Move Set to Be Completed This Week Tuesday, 13th Jun 2017 13:14 Town’s move to sign Rangers striker Joe Garner is expected to be completed later this week, TWTD understands.
TWTD revealed that the Blues were close to making their first signing of the season on Sunday with a fee of £1 million - Town's first seven-figure outlay since the recruitment of Paul Taylor for £1.5 million from Peterborough in August 2012 - having been agreed between the clubs.
The further formalities relating to the deal are in the process of being concluded with Garner, 29, set to pen a three-year contract with the Blues.
Garner moved to Ibrox from Preston for £1.4 million last summer, when Town we understand were also interested, signing a three-year contract.
The former England U16, U17 and U19 international scored 10 goals in 22 starts and 12 sub appearances during 2016/17.
Garner started his career with his hometown club Blackburn Rovers but was unable to break into the first team prior to moving on to Carlisle, initially on loan, then Nottingham Forest, Huddersfield (loan), Scunthorpe (loan), Watford and Carlisle for a further loan spell before joining Preston in 2013.
While with the Lilywhites the 5ft 10in tall frontman scored a 20-minute second-half hat-trick as the Lancastrians beat the Blues 3-2 in an FA Cup third round replay at Deepdale in January 2014.
The following season Garner won the League One Player of the Year award as he helped Preston into the Championship via the play-offs.

If we're chucking £1m on a 29 year old then i'm guessing Marcus has decided to open his wallet and more (and hopefully better) are to follow. Huws should be our priority.

a waste of £1m if you ask me if your trying to find a bright spot about this deal then you won,t he,s not going to improve at 29 yrs of age his best season was 3 yrs ago at preston if rangers are prepared to let him go then he is,nt good enough for the championship , if we where in div 1 then fair enough but I would rather spend the money on a couple of youngsters from the lower leagues, I,ll bet anyone he wont get 10 goals in the championship I,d like to think that sears will be our go to guy this season after being wasted being played out wide for 18 months

My guess is that he's the replacement for McGoalshy

Just watched some of his highlights on YouTube and he looks better than I expected. He looks more lively than our strikers did last season! Hopefully he can hit the road running as we badly need a striker with an eye for goal as we've badly struggled for goals since Murphy left.

Wasn't Murphy supposedly finished when we got him from Sunderland?

mkbobby, you've brought me down to earth with a bit of a bump, maybe that footage of him at Preston I just watched was him at his peak and we're buying him on the way down. Hopefully he's not done at 29 (depends how bad an effect his injury problems have had on him) as we spend so little money now it would be a great shame to waste it on a lemon!

All the haters hating already, give him a chance. I say welcome to the lad and hope he does well for us. Nice to see us spending a bit of cash. I don't think he will quite be the replacement that we need for Murphy but it's a start and I could be wrong

Underwhelmed, this sighning won't make me run to Portman road to buy a season ticket, he's not a Darren bent or Marcus bent or Marcus Stewart, he's just your average Joe!!

Not a hater - just someone who cares about this club and when I keep hearing about how tight money is then I personally find it astonishing that we're prepared to throw around a million quid at a player who's never done anything at this level and pushing 30. I could see Leon Best was going to be a disaster (most of us could - our brainless manager couldn't) but at least he didn't cost anything apart from wasted wages. This for me is too much of a gamble on another jorneyman...Mick's wasted far too much on taking gambles over the last 5 seasons.

I said yesterday that at £500,000 this would be a good signing .... at £1m it feels a little expensive BUT if it's not the end of the outlays but signals the start of some real investment/desire by Evans/Mcarthy then great. Hope the change back to the Championship is just the spur he needs to re-create his Preston form & wish him well. If it's the only signing or considered our summer "marquee" signing then I think we might be in trouble !

Well I'm not gonna succumb to knock Mr. Garner in the sense of whether he is a "good", "mediocre" or "bad" 3 year signing for ITFC, as quite obviously you have to be a bloody certified Psychic to give a proper answer to that one! lol .........HOWEVER especially now considering the new 7 figure price for him i.e. someone somewhat *suddenly* deemed not only not a "keeper" by his current employers residing in the freakingly (NOT!) awesome & high standard Scottish PL???!!! but imho of even greater significance: A) at the fairly advance age of 29 years and 4 month come opening day 2017/2018 ... and B) frankly not close to being worthy of the "excellent player" let alone "good player" LABEL (which numerous TWTD members have actually labelled him as the last couple of weeks) at this HERE level mind you! (His indeed great merits in League 1 is an entirely different matter) .....which mostly must be based on his inconspicuous combined Championship track record (a goal every 6-7 league game) in the Championship , compiled not only in part when he was a fair bit younger but also presumably "by-default" :-) lol with I take it somewhat more daring & attacking-minded managers than our prehistoric super wimpy safety-first & draw-happy Dino .... So I PERSONALLY have a little list of around 12 offensive players at in almost all cases well under 27 years old, 2 from the UK but most from the 2 tier or low part of the 1st tier in central Europe like France, Belgium & Holland that I personally MUCH MUCH more would splash out (in some of those 12 cases mayhaps slightly optimistic indeed but nevertheless certainly still feasible) 1 mill or up to 1.5 mill transfer fee for ... which of course is a lot of the total annual transfer budget for a usually super-tight club like our ME owned one! .... rather than on the btw also apparently to some observers here quite hmmm unsportsmanlike- & disciplinary- susceptible and thus to some notable degree = overall "gamble" that is 3 years?! of Mr. Garner. . But having said that about my personal preferences I will also stress that I like most sensible TWTD members ---- aye including even those who more or less daily keeps on moaning about OTHER fans moaning & moaning rightly or wrongly (i.e. "other" generally meaning them pesky anti-MM & anti-regime fans) , apparently completely oblivious to the fact that this imho ULTRA LAME repeated behavior of theirs essentially very much makes them tiresome & broken-record-like "moaners" themselves!!! :-) LOL :-) ---- I agree that once Mr. Garner is officially an ITFC player but preferably simply right now & here!!! then there is no sense nor etiquette whatsoever in being overly negative "just for the bloody sake of it " about him and his future contribution here while also not making him feel remotely welcome and basically wishing him the very best at ITFC .... regardless of whether you initially rate him or not. Period!

As always, I wish any new signing well. Have heard mixed reviews, but seems like a typical MM signing. If he can produce the goals he scored in league one then could be a good asset. Temprement could be an issue, but will give 100%. Good to see us spend some money - but need several more signings.

If were spending a mil then Jason Cummings from Hibs would be my shout. Young, scored plenty ready for the step up. Supposedly Forrest are in for him. Interesting that the man who took him to Rangers isn't looking at him again.... I hope I'm wrong and I'll give him all the support he could want in a Town shirt but I just don't see the goals that we need in Garner.

Personally for a couple of reasons I believe this is an awful signing. Firstly he is 29 years old so past the prime age for playing at his best for an outfield player ( for goalkeepers 29-32 is a approximate prime age for them). Yes I know some players do improve later on Jaime Vardy is the prime example but his is the general exception to the rule, and to those fans that will look to Jaime to back up your arguments as to why he COULD be a good player: don't be so deluded, at least Vardy had a capable manager and incredible creative players such as mahrez to bring the best out of him. We unfortunateley have neither. Secondly his record in the championship is poor 6 goals in 41 games in the 2015-16 season or 0.14 goal to game ratio. His overall record is 22 goals in 133 championship games or a 0.16 goal to game ratio. Since the fact we need a striker that's got to score 15+ a season it can clearly see he doesn't fit the bill. However his ratio in league 1 is very good with 43 goals in 72 games for Preston in league one alone and this brings me to one of my biggest issues with this signing. Tall at 6ft 1, successful in league one but not anywhere else, bit of a journey man finding success at only one club is a very similar resume to David McGoldrick a fan favourite and a one of the only successful strikers under MM. I get the feeling that Mick thinks he can be the manager to make him successful in the championship like he did with McGoldrick, which (if true) is a prime example to MM's arrogance and delusion. If he couldn't make Sears or Nouble or Moore or Larson or Taylor our 15+ striker then how on earth will he succeed with Garner, it's just madness and stupidity! Plus I fear that MM will see this as the Murphy hole filled in which case we are in serious trouble next season if we are relying on a striker that can't hit double scoring figures in his entire career at this level to be our main 15 goal striker. Thirdly and most importantly I believe the ramifications of this signing will badly effect us in the long run. He is ,unless by some miracle in which I'm proved wrong, going to most likely be a flop, another MM misjudgement. This time though ME has spent £1 million pounds on this player which would make understandably give him flashbacks to JET and Chopra and stop investing his money in players again taking the club back to step 1. And who can blame him if MM is making daft signings like this??? But it will mean we will fall further and further behind the rest of the league leading to the inevitable: a free fall down the footballing pyramid. Fourthly, let's not kid ourselves here the Scottish league is completely different compared to the championship (and by that I mean worse). The championship is volatile unpredictable tough and competitive whilst the Scottish premier league is neither of those things hence look at Celtic going unbeaten all season to win their 6th title on the bounce. With Garner barley getting into a Rangers side that posed no real threat to the title or second place. So if he can't into that team or preform in that league (7 goals in 31 appearances) how on earth will he be able to perform in the championship a much harder and more competitive league? On a side note this is nothing personal against Garner at all it just seems a reckless, uninspiring signing that does not fit the teams needs and it just seems that we are scraping the bottom of the barrel to what's available for us when we could and should be aiming for so much more. I wish you all the best Garner at our club and I hope you prove me wrong however I doubt it. I would also like to point out this isn't an attack on Garner as my frustration comes mainly from the principle of this transfer and the decision making process gone into this transfer rather than Garner himself. MM, ME OUT! COYB!

... ArnieM - I think you're being rather optimistic to be honest - far too many 'if's' I'm afraid. I can see McGoldrick spending even more time on the treatment table than last season, Bishop I feel thinks he has 'arrived' although he is far from having done that, and Huws looks as if he will be going elsewhere. That's the reality of it all - and after all, with the Dino still at the helm - HOOFBALL will continue to be the order of the day. Why ? - because he knows no other way. Your thoughts looked good on paper though.

1 million could be classed as technically 2 in the climate we are in, season ticket sales equalling 1 million loss in revenue, which could have funded this technically but now we have to find it......

Never in the field of football have so many moaned so much about so little. So much negativity! If we've made no decent signings by the time the season starts then have a moan. MM is going to be here this season so why not break the habit of a lifetime and get behind him.
Suffolk_n_Good added 21:24 - Jun 13
I have absolutely no intention of "getting behind him" he decides to swear, & slag off the fans of ITFC at every opportunity, he has a one dimensional way of playing, he has no idea on how to set up a team to win & lastly he actually believes his way is the right way, so by all means micksillett you support him, I won't be attending PR again until he has gone

We just can't get it right can we... We finally spend money, but on a player approaching 30 who's best Championship goal scoring season amassed 6 goals. I'd have preferred us to have spent £1m on a younger proven goal scorer from the Spanish or German 2nd tier. If we are spending/wasting a million on Garner then I expect more signings and more money to be spent. If this is McCarthy's BIG signing of the season then I literally give up.
