Town Closing in on Huws Signing Tuesday, 27th Jun 2017 19:48 TWTD understands that Town’s deal to sign former loanee Emyr Huws from Cardiff City on a permanent basis could be completed as soon as tomorrow.
Yesterday, Bluebirds boss Neil Warnock revealed that his club had accepted an offer from the Blues for the 23-year-old Wales international, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Portman Road.
The fee is likely to be Town’s second seven-figure outlay of the summer, probably in excess of the £1 million paid to Rangers for Joe Garner, the biggest sum spent by manager Mick McCarthy since he took charge of the Blues in November 2012.
Speaking at the first day of pre-season training yesterday, McCarthy said he’d be delighted to get the deal done.
“We’ve made a bid and had it accepted by Cardiff,” he said. “He was an outstanding player for us.
“Tom Lawrence stood out like a sore thumb with the goals that he got, but from Emyr coming in in the window in January, he was brilliant, really outstanding.
“And I don’t think I’ll ever forget the goal he scored against Newcastle that probably rubber-stamped our survival in the league, so if we get him back I’ll be thrilled.”
McCarthy says everything seemed to click for Huws during his loan spell at Town, in which he scored three goals in 13 starts, following an unsettled period of his career having left Manchester City after progressing through their academy.
“He was a Manchester City player, he was on loan at Birmingham, he was at Huddersfield, he’s been at Wigan, he’s been to Cardiff.
“Sometimes you find a place where you’ve enjoyed the football maybe, you find a manager who trusts you and lets you play and it just fits.
“And I think it did for Emyr and hopefully we can get those performances that he showed last season and better than that if he signs permanently.”

Good permanent signing. Nice to see us in for players who can develop and push on, rather than players in the retirement stage of their career. Do need 3 more signings to be competitive, particularly given the nature of our injury situation every year.

I don't want to sound negative, but if we are honest, we are still in the same mode as before: do things on the cheap -"need to sell more players before we can bring anyone in" - and hope that we can pull off a surprise. I'm sorry, but that is pretty unlikely. I really like Spence and Huws as people; they seem both to have a really good attitude and they are not bad players. But except for the addition of Garner and Celina, we are so far not much different than we were last season. The latter is an unknown entity, and for me the only bit of quite exciting news we've had to date. (Let's just hope he gets the chance to play. )I don't expect us to go out and splash the cash like some of our rivals. I even like the idea of sticking to a sensible budget, as a good "family club" should. But I want a happy medium, combining financial caution with a bit of REAL ambition. A couple of serious signings might just make us competitive as opposed to our present likely mid-table obscurity once again. Anyway, COYB!

Great business I always look forward to the new season this one with some optimism bring some of the youngsters through and this season could suprise a few. Only cloud is that hanging over Bart let's hope the club do everything to keep him.

Undoubtedly this is good news and the club should be commended for doing the deal, assuming it's finally confirmed. However, this and the other signings are really only the bare minimum needed in order to challenge for promotion. And it's going to be more about HOW we play, which will be down to MM... Still, good news and welcome aboard.

I believe that Huws would be a great replacement for Skuse. Can tackle, has vision to play a pass (forward), can head a ball and has a presence. Add a real playmaker in the midfield and we 'could' be OK. We have as yet not made any improvements on last years team that just avoided relegation.

This is good news. Emyr made an impact and his presence was a factor in keeping us safe in the Championship.

Wonderful news - how anyone can find fault with this is beyond me! He was my main transfer wish for the summer.

We are not quite there yet Arnie;but like most think he is a welcome addition. Some however, especially the beat have reservations;and Pragmatic as usual having a go,instead of posting positively as most have. I agree that he does go missing sometimes;but is a talented player and will be a great addition if the deal does go through. My only concern is not with Emr;but Cole Skues. Will he still be a shoo in.I hope not as he tends to slow the play down, and is too negative

looking at the transfers for today I see that Jack Marriott has signed for Peterborough from Luton. It says for a substantial fee, may I ask did ITFC have a percentage sell on clause with Luton if they were to sell him. Be nice to think there might be a bit more money in the transfer pot for MM to use.

This is an excellent news. Trouble is last season he wasn't very well supported with different players in midfield. So agree that we need McGinn for one and with maybe Dozzy getting a look in it will be better. Hopefully we'll play 532 and leave out Skuse!

Kingfisher. I think Marriot was released rather than sold so no such clause...?

Seasider - there is not a shadow of doubt in my mind unfortunately that Skuse will be anything but a nailed on starter (favourite!!) and that will be a shame. Your correct in the fact he does slow play down, struggles to move the ball forward but The Dino must see something in him that the rest of us don't. Let's hope that the favourites scenario will be the only thing that remains from last season and not the negative tactics, hoofball etc, etc ,etc. I personally don't think the Dino has it in him to change in any shape or form, but we will see.

I'm very happy that for once we're doing deals early in the Summer and not on deadline day. Hopefully this means that McCarthy, Milne and Evans have got the message.

Great signing. Added creativity and forward thinking to our drab midfield last season. Hopefully we can sign one or two like minded midfielders to play alongside him. I still think we need 4 or 5 new signings on top of what we have (after a few players leave). Just hope we can hang on to Bart.
