Youngsters Make Ireland Trip
Tuesday, 4th Jul 2017 16:22

Youngsters Tristan Nydam (pictured), Flynn Downes, George Fowler, Adam McDonnell and Pat Webber have all joined the first-team squad for this week’s Irish training camp at the Carton House Hotel in Co Kildare.

Midfielder Downes, who signed his first pro contract last week, was on the bench for the final game of last season at Nottingham Forest, while defenders Webber and Fowler and midfielder Nydam - who came on in the first-team friendly at Cambridge last summer - were unused subs for the senior side earlier in the season.

McDonnell, another midfielder, made his only Championship appearance on the final day of 2015/16 at Derby having made his senior debut earlier that season at Doncaster in the Capital One Cup.

New loanee Bersant Celina also flew out with the rest of the squad yesterday along with fellow summer additions Joe Garner and Tom Adeyemi, as well as Jordan Spence, who signed a two-year deal last month having been out of contract at the end of the season.

Steven Taylor, another whose short-term deal was up at the end of 2016/17, has also travelled as he looks to prove his fitness and win a new contract.

David McGoldrick, Emyr Huws, Tommy Smith and Andre Dozzell won’t join up with the squad until after the Irish trip due to summer international commitments.

McGoldrick, Huws and Smith were involved with the Republic of Ireland, Wales and New Zealand respectively earlier in the summer, while Dozzell is currently away with the England U19s at the European Championships in Georgia.

Town play their first friendly against Drogheda United at United Park on Saturday afternoon (KO 2pm). A full list of the Blues' pre-season games can be found here.

Everything I have heard about Nydam (and seen from Football Manager) suggests he could be a wonderful little player one day. Hopefully he gets a chance to impress.

I assume Monty Patterson not considered due to international with Tommy Smith and New Zealand, but what about Ben Morris out some good displays in last season for U23

Good luck to them all, fingers crossed everyone comes back injury free. Pleasantly surprised to see McDonnell included, thought he'd drifted out of first team reckoning for good during the second half of last season. Hope he takes his chance to impress.

Great to see that Mick is including them.

Hopefully they will get some game time and experience from the older players.

It will give Mick a chance to see them play competitive games.

In terms of numbers, we have a very small squad. They may all be needed!

Be interesting to know the full squad that had flown out. Would like to know if Morris, Blanchfield or Paterson have gone (maybe not the latter as he might be with New Zealand as well). Just take all the youngsters with you. On another note does anyone know when the numbers are announced?

Very small squad at moment, but still plenty of time to sign a few players. Five or six more new faces and I feel we will be competitive. Present squad: possible relegation. We are the smallest squad in Championship right now, but still have time to change that.

Squad looks very small. Three new signings, with Huws signed on a permanent but part of last years squad. So much still needed.
