Connolly Hopes Loan Move Will Aid His Development
Monday, 4th Sep 2017 16:21

New loan signing Callum Connolly says he hopes joining Blues will benefit him more than staying with his parent club Everton and playing in their U23s side.

The 19-year-old right-back, who has been given the number 16 shirt and can also operate as a left-sided full-back and at centre-half, joined the Blues on loan for the season in the final hours of the transfer window.

"I got the call on the Thursday night, but I knew Ipswich had been interested for the past couple of weeks," he told iFollow Ipswich.

"The gaffer spoke to me and straight away I thought it would be a good move for me.

"My aim always was to go on loan and develop myself more, so I hope that potentially playing every Saturday and Tuesday will benefit me more than playing U23s football at Everton.

"Everton wanted me to go out on loan to develop as a player and as a man. It will be tough moving away from my family for a while but I want to stake a claim in the team and help move the club in the right direction.”

Liverpool-born Connolly, who has won England caps at U17, U18, U19 and U20 levels, came through the youth system at Everton, with whom he has made one Premier League sub appearance, and has previously spent time on loan at Barnsley and Wigan.

Having made three starts for the Tykes during a month-long spell towards the end of 2015/16, he spent the second half of last season with the Latics, making 15 starts and three sub appearances, scoring twice.

In the summer he was with the England U20s squad as they won their World Cup in South Korea, making appearances in two of the Young Lions' early games.

Not quite sure how we'll work out which is Downes and which is Connolly
other than that, it's all good

Best of luck to the lad. If it means Iorfa can get game time at CB I'm all for it.

I don't understand why people are suddenly saying this means Iorfa will play centre back. Surely if he was a better centre back than Spence then he would've been playing there and Spence would've been playing right back?

Blue blood, surely you could flip that though and say I don't understand why people are saying this means Spence will play right back as if he was a better right back than Iorfa etc. etc.

I imagine this move helps us out if we play a back 3 meaning Spence AND Iorfa could play there if needed I suppose (I really hope it doesn't get to that!). Other than that it does seem a bit of an odd move. But good luck Callum, you're highly thought of by all accounts so let hope we see the best from you!

Think we assume because he's 19 he would find it tricky at CB. Maybe good enough already.

I think we assume McCarthy thinks that, given that he said two weeks ago "I don't see any team in the league with an 18-year-old centre-half playing. Most of them are tough, hairy-arsed, experienced, professional footballers. That's pretty much what you need.”

Will Mick play him in the centre, after all he is 19(not 18) lol.

A panic buy? But would he have got him anyway as well as Goldson, who knows!

Could turn out to be an asset, like Celina,as long as our esteemed manager plays them.

Welcome anyway lad.

I wish him well, but personally I'd prefer to be aiding our own players development.

Now that we've got him, I hope he gets some game time. Rather defeats the purpose of both camps otherwise. Always quite liked Everton too: "The people's club."

wow! that's a shock, a season long loan to aid his own development.

I don't really understand the necessity for this move.

Best of luck anyway.

1/ spot on jas0999 - can't believe we've let Emmanuel go.

2/ just hope he is a straight replacement for imawful.

If I was the manager then Emmanuel would be playing at right-back and we would have spent say £750k on an experienced Berra replacement rather than signing Irofa or Connelly. That said I welcome the new lads to the club. Connelly sounds good; hopefully he does well for us and we sign him permanently.

Spoke to my Everton mate who was banging on about Wayne Rooney when we were both 16 and asked him about Connor Grant last year, and this lad this.

He told me Grant was very poor and amazed we'd taken him on loan.

He says this lad is very very promising, and surprised they'd loaned him out as leaves them short of cover for Baines.

Looks an odd signing on paper, however have to assume Mick hasn't signed him for no reason?!

He sounds like a promising signing. Callum should be at right back as Iorfa can play in the middle. But how good is Iorfa at centre back. Anyway, good luck Callum.

So with not being able to get a CB do you think we will be playing 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 until at least one of our CB's come back from injury. I think we will need our forwards to keep outscoring the opposition until we are settled? No good CB free agents then? (Considering we have missed the transfer deadline)

Good luck and lets hope that this provides some needed help with the defender/injury issue.

Has decent pedigree and sounds useful going forward, with Knudsen shining at CB and Kenlock not in the best form I wouldn't be surprised to see him play at LB.

Well everyone gave a bit of stick when we sign Lawrence on loan on loan who knows he may turn out to be a great prospect in the back 3 but do wish him best and welcome to to the fotress and yes i no Lawrence wasn't a defender but hoping as downes play last night it be good to see him back and hoping smith to get back also as he's a vital player in that centre so let's bring on qpr and hoping 3 points.
