Skuse Hoping to Be Fit to Face Former Club
Wednesday, 14th Mar 2018 18:40

Midfielder Cole Skuse is hopeful of being fit enough to face his old club Bristol City at Ashton Gate on Saturday having missed Tuesday’s 3-0 home defeat to Hull due to a hamstring problem.

“I’ll be outside doing some work tomorrow and then hopefully I’ll be back in training on Friday,” Skuse told the club website.

“My hamstring has tightened up a bit, but if all goes well I’ll be okay for Saturday. I want to be out there helping the team.”

Skuse, 31, joined the Blues after leaving the Robins, his hometown club where he came through the youth system, in the summer of 2013.

People can knock Skuse but we do look more solid in midfield when he plays.

I know things are bleak right now... but skuse was the best town performer last week when I was at Sheffield Wednesday last week. He is a hardworking player and rarely lets us down. We are a better team when he is in our side and within our current squad he is the best holding midfielder. He will never be a playmaker (which we so need) but he is effective in his role. I welcome him back because he will perform. It is not his fault that he sometimes has two other similar players alongside him !!!
True story!

I've had a change of heart on Skuse. Having been a critic of his since he joined Town, there's no doubt in my mind that our midfield is weaker without him. He's not a great footballer and doesn't contribute nearly enough going forward but he does the unglamorous holding roll and he does it well.

The problem comes when Skuse is partnered with similar players in midfield. Skuse is a fairly limited defensive midfielder so needs a couple of creatives around him. I think the long-running Skuglas partnership didn't do the fans' appreciation of him any good.

In fairness to Cole obe could argue that he came out better than any player in the squad after last night.

Whilst he is in no way our own Pirlo he does a least protect our back 4 and limit the opposition to 2 goals a game.

Skuse does all the dog work in midfield quite well, the problem is whe we need to go forward !
He can't make an attacking pass ! And he shouldn't really be expected to as we should have some attacking midfielders in there alongside him ! Not a team of 8 defensive player.
So, yeah pleased if he's back and I hope Nydam, Ward and Celina are in the with him..... but the won't be because Mick is to stubborn!
MM has to go so the good players we actually have can get the confidence back and play how I'm sure they want to play !

Let's be clear here. We (the Team) MISS Skuse when he's not in the side! He does the dirty work for the team. Havent some of you grasped that yet?

And let's be clear skuse wouldn't be in the team if we have another manager here

We only ever win with Skuse in the team. True fact.

But if Skuse fills the defensive midfielder role successfully then there shouldn't be any need for anyone else in the midfield who doesn't pass the ball forward, or dribble, or shoot.
You can't have it both ways.

Baxter7: who would you currently have in that midfield role then instead of Skuse?

Good news. Skuse is a far better midfielder than Gleeson and Hyam, as his absence against Hull showed. I hope we win Saturday to keep ahead of Norwich, but surely MM's time is up whatever the result.

Our form dramatically improved without Skuse in the team this time last year actually GCON

Skuse is a key member in our team but MM please drop Hyam - he is useless [ he has no pace , no skill and no vision to go forward ] - I rate Hyam as non- league standard at best.

I think the system Skuse has to play in does him no favours. I'm no expert but I think every team needs a Skuse type player to break up play, pass it to the nearest team mate and then sit in again. The system he has to play in (certainly against Sheff Utd) meant that the 2 nearest team mates were also defensive minded. Resulting in an endless loop of win ball, pass to another defensive midfielder, who has no instinct to go forward or spot a forward pass, so pass back to defender to lump it up front.
