Town will have to wait if they want to make Paul Hurst their new manager with his Shrewsbury side having reached the League One play-off final.

The Shrews, already a goal in front from Thursday's first leg at the Valley, beat Charlton 1-0 at home in this afternoon’s second match to secure a place in the Wembley final on Sunday 27th May where they will play Rotherham, with whom Blues right-back Josh Emmanuel is on loan, or Scunthorpe.

The Millers and Iron drew 2-2 in the first leg at Glanford Park yesterday and meet again at the New York Stadium on Wednesday.

Hurst, who is currently the joint-favourite to take over at Town at 7-4 with Bet Victor alongside St Mirren’s Jack Ross, is believed to be high on Blues owner Marcus Evans’s list of potential new bosses but we understand formal contact is still to be made with the Shrews with their season still ongoing.

Evans has held interviews with a number of candidates - among them Tim Sherwood, Scott Parker and Jack Ross, who he will meet with for a second time in the week to come - over the last couple of weeks but will have to wait another fortnight before he can talk to Hurst.

Quizzed about links with Town 10 days ago, Hurst, whose side finished third in League One, said he was flattered.

"It's just a compliment to everyone here and the season that we've had,” the former Ilkeston, Boston and Grimsby manager said.

Asked whether he could offer Shrews fans an assurance he would still be at the Montgomery Waters Meadow next season, he said: "I can't honestly answer that - it would be wrong for me to sit here and say that. I don't know what's going to happen between now and then.”

Meanwhile, 17-year-old Blues right-back Dylan Crowe was an unused sub as the England U17s beat Norway 2-0 at the Pirelli Stadium, Burton this evening to secure their place in the European Championships semi-finals.

Elsewhere, Fortuna Dusseldorf won 3-2 at Nurnberg this afternoon to secure the 2. Bundesliga title having confirmed promotion a fortnight ago.

Don't know to much about Ross but what I have read and heard he sound a good bet as does Hurst. Would not be so keen on Parker and Sherwood Exciting times and even more so if Evans lets some of his £800 million fall in to the new managers hands

Sure, Burley made mistakes at the end last time but Sheepy was the one who put us into administration and he got a cushy job with the FA as a reward. All this trendy must have a young manager, why? Most have no experience with a club this size or ever got promotion to premier. Burley and Butch on a two year deal please!

rfretwell added 08:28 - May 14 Has everyone forgotten the great job John Lyall did for us in getting us promoted prior to the Burley era? An avuncular highly experienced manager with huge knowledge of the game at the highest level. Brought in experienced players from the Hammers - big Steve Whitton and Paul Goddard, blended them with highly talented Town youngsters like Dozzell and Kiwomya and hey presto. The Burley/Butcher partnership could do the same - they certainly have loads of high level contacts that young inexperienced managers wont have.

Who better for the club than two ex-Town players who still live and breath Ipswich, and are legends in their own right. Surely everyone can remember the style of football Burley employed at the club. On the ground, attractive, attacking football. I keep hearing this "they've been out of the game too long". Is this the only negative anyone can come up with? You don't forget how to ride a bike. Butcher by the way, was managing Newport only 2 and a half years ago. Between the two of them they have over 35 years of managerial experience. So any kind of 'unqualified' argument is just ludicrous.

All that experience but with a chance to look at things with an outsiders perspective. It's also significant that GB will be up to speed on the inside workings of Playford Road via Hogg and probably the likes of Dyer and Bramble. Isn't GB dyers brother or sisters godfather?

People have been really against Parker yes he has no experience but I've only heard good things about him coming out of spurs and if he is half as good as his teacher we will be in good hands

Burley and Butcher our of the game for so long......you don't forget how to manage and they are not just sitting in the garden at home with the tv off, they go to matches and watch games. Redknapp is out of the game in the same way but Evans is asking for his input to possible managers. Would prefer Burley to Parker who is “active” as he is managering a u18 side. Saying all that Would be happy with Hurst or Ross

BlueBlood90 added 11:11 - May 14 I'd like to think it'll be Hurst or Ross now. They both appear to be the two names where every fan would get behind them with 100% support. I don't think anyone would be happy with Sherwood and there would be a few question marks about someone like Scott Parker. Burley did a wonderful job but should probably be left in the past. Personally, I think Hurst is the best candidate. He has come up from the conference and scouted every league on his way up to our level. Therefore, he will have an eye for which players have the potential to make the step up to the Championship. He's also been in and around the play offs with every club he's been at. Jack Ross sounds like a very decent Plan B though and seems to have a positive style and is ambitious. However, he doesn't have any experience of English football and can't imagine he has many contacts in the English game. Also, the Scottish Championship is a million miles off being a comparable league to the Championship. If we appointed him I'd still be happy though.

Lightningboy added 11:15 - May 14 Think our owner really needs to stop pussyfooting about regards Jack Ross otherwise we'll lose him to another club..waiting at least another 2 /2 and a half weeks just to even interview Hurst seems nonsensical to me now. If we fail on either of these 2 then I think Burley/Butcher would be a very very safe pair of hands. Like I said though,I hope Marcus doesn't go and drag his feet and undo all the good work & good feeling that's been restored over the last few weeks by appointing someone nobody really wants.

timspencero added 12:01 - May 14 George Burley for me has to be brought in, ideally as manager and if not at the very least in some high profile role. Club legend yes, brilliantly talented yes. I've said it before, i'll say it again - he is a huge part of this football club. People saying he shouldn't come back are like the Newcastle fans that wanted rid of Bobby Robson. Thought our fans were better than that. But more to the point, again, he is an unbelievably talented manager. He has a long history of massive successes. He built our club into the EUFA. He transformed Palace. He transformed Southampton. He had Hearts challenging for the title. He is magic. And he's ours, and wants to be involved. It's obvious.

I really don't think many of the names in the hat are seriously in the frame, bookies do what bookies do . For me now it would be a straight choice Hurst or Ross. Burley /Butcher would be the fall back option but not with an initial long term contract ..

Also if hurst was a target then surely contact would of been made by now. I think it is plain to see that Jack Ross is the number 1 target.
