Town Draw Exeter Away in First Round of Carabao Cup
Friday, 15th Jun 2018 11:03

Town will face League Two Exeter City away in the first round of the Carabao Cup, the draw having taken place in Vietnam this morning.

The teams last met in the competition at the same stage at St James Park in August 2010 when the Blues won 3-2 after extra-time, Ronan Murray netting once and David Norris twice for the Blues and Ryan Harley, who is still with the Grecians, scoring both for the home side.

The clubs also faced one another in a two-legged first-round tie in 1998/99. The first leg in the South-West ended 1-1 with Matt Holland putting the Blues in front and Jonathan Richardson equalising for the home side in the final minute.

Town comfortably won the second leg at Portman Road, Mauricio Taricco, Holland again, Mick Stockwell, Alex Mathie and Paul Mason, playing his final game for the Blues, scoring the goals in a 5-1 victory. Richardson again netted for Exeter.

Overall, the Blues have won 11 of the 26 meetings between the sides (eight in the league and one in the FA Cup), nine have ended in draws (eight in the league), while Exeter have won six (all in the league).

Unlike the 2010 match, this year's tie, which will be played in the week commencing August 13th, won't go to extra-time, the additional half-hour having been scrapped with a number of changes having been made to the competition for the season ahead. While the draw was regionalised on a North-South basis, there was no seeding.

Last season Town won 2-0 at Luton in the first round before a very youthful team impressed but were beaten 2-1 at Crystal Palace.

Town's Championship fixtures for 2018/19 will be announced at 9am on Thursday 21st June when they will be available on TWTD.

Possibly, the furthest away journey we could have drawn?

Hardly exciting but at least Hurst will have decent knowledge of playing league two opponents. I doubt there will be any complacency and a good chance to get a win in the bank if we are focussed

Go for it, lets get a cup run , if we are just going to float about mid table we may as well. I think we should be trying to win every game and develop a winning attitude. We have had too many years with no cup interest, and boring play not to lose tactics. Lets have something cheer about .

Yes yes yes! I live in Exeter and rarely get to see Town! Very very excited for this - St James' Park is a lovely little ground too - proper local ground that still has standing areas!

I am sure Paul Hurst's approach to cup games will be refreshing for us all!

Surely one of the worst draws we could have got?

Went to the last Tuesday night game we played, if I remember correctly the local police were more interested in under age drinkers. Fish and chips on the beach beforehand.

If Carlsberg did Cup draws that would be PROBABLY the worst draw in the World. Totally hopeless on every level.

Good job the draw was regionalised otherwise we could have faced a long journey.

Crikey! What's that 300 miles? On a Tuesday night. Jumpers for goalposts. Mmmm. Marvellous. Isn't it.

It would be fairer if they divided it east to west - then maybe someone like Bolton could trek to Devon for a change.
