Updated: Webster Set for Bristol City as Clubs Agree Fee
Wednesday, 27th Jun 2018 15:38

Town have agreed a fee with Bristol City for central defender Adam Webster.

It was initially reported that the Blues would receive £5 million for the 23-year-old, however, the Bristol Post says the initial figure is £3.5 million rising to £8 million, presumably after appearance milestones as per the deal which saw Aaron Cresswell join West Ham in 2014.

TWTD understands some of the fee the Blues will receive will go to Webster's former club Portsmouth, who are due a percentage of the profit Town have made on the deal, believed to be 20 per cent.

Webster cost the Blues £700,000 plus Matt Clarke - who is believed to have been valued at £100,000 - when he signed in the summer of 2016.

The defender is at Ashton Gate this afternoon to undergo a medical with the deal looking likely to go through later today.

News that the Robins had renewed their interest in Webster broke last night as a replacement for Aden Flint, who has moved to Middlesbrough for £7 million.

Webster made 48 starts and five sub appearances in an injury-hit spell, scoring one goal.

The money received for Webster gives greater scope for new boss Paul Hurst to pay fees as he looks to add to his squad ahead of the new season, having already signed Trevoh Chalobah on a season-long loan from Chelsea.

As reported earlier, Hurst is in the process of trying to sign free agent former Crawley Town winger Jordan Roberts, while another wideman, a central defender to replace Webster and probably a striker are likely to be among his other targets.

Earlier this week the Blues were linked with a move for Blackpool centre-half Curtis Tilt, while Shrewsbury's Aristote Nsiala, also a central defender, has been mentioned in connection with Town on a number of occasions, although his former boss Hurst played down those reports on Monday.

Although disappointed to see him leave, we have to face up to realty that we need to sell a player from time to time. I'd rather it was Webster leaving than Bart or Waggy. Hopefully Hurst will be given some funds to reinvest and whose to say he can't find another Webster from lower leagues. Hopefully we have a sell on clause put into the fee, so that if he does improve as others have have suggested, we wont miss out in a couple of years time.

I believe this is good for Ipswich. Decent money for a player who is injury prone. If we can put the money into a player smartly then this could be a very good deal for us. Excited to see who could be coming in now :) COYB

Not sure on this one on one hand a player with lots of potential and can play some good stuff. On the other hand he's had a lot of injuries can we risk another player being injury prone and leaving on a free. I think it's a good offer hopefully a sell clause and we should take it I think Evans will invest as Hurst said earlier he had to sell to buy. It's a new start so everyone support this discussion judge Evans on his actions now not what happened in the past!! I don't think Evans ever sold a player without out his managers agreement.

May be on my own but think this is good money and if it means we don't sell Bart even better deal . Webster has potential no doubt but is very injury prone and doesn't command enough for me for a centre back . Certainly not as good as Flint so 5 million is good money to 're build the squad

I remember when Mick got Webster in & we were all up in arms because Matt Clarke went the other way, now it's time to go back to Pompey & get him back! I wouldn't be surprised if this lad Tilt is bought in

A shame we won't get to see him under a progressive manager who will allow him to leave his own box. So much potential when not held back by Dino

Just hope this means Waghorn and Bart stay. Hopefully get Nsiala as replacement. Think that would be decent business if that were the case. Only plays half a season like McGoldrick.

Great piece of business, the guy's been so injury prone since we signed him..he may be a bit stylish but playing roughly 5 out of 10 games is no use to us whatsoever.

If we can bring in 3 or 4 players for that cash then it's a no-brainer.

So we lose a player with possible long term future , get in an 18 year old loanee who has very few league games . Just hope there is a plan for permanent replacement and money does not disappear as usual ...if B B and D W go also we are doomed.

Great price for an average centre half who is another player who came to us injured and is repeatedly out do to another injury of some sorts , we need players who can at least play more than twenty games before they pull an eyelash . It seems Mr Hurst is weeding out the sick notes and 5 million is great business ,

Its good business for a player that has only managed to play 2/3rds of each season. Yes, he can pass a little but most of the hype around him is still hype. Injuries have stopped any chance of Webster showing any consistency at the back. There are more important members of the squad we need to keep, Bart, Waghorn and good young players like Dozzell, Dowes etc. I trust PH will be able to find a decent replacement.

Maybe he wanted to go?
The business is good and if it lets us bring in others then that's up to the new boss, stop moaning, this happens every season.

That'll do. Now time to scatter gun 3.5m down in the lower leagues. One or two are bound to make the step up.

Not too worried about this I dont think, but more disappointed that Tommy did not stick about just a bit longer. He may be gutted now.

You lot make me laugh! SO many experts here about money being spent, money not being spent etc.. You KNOW nothing, OK?

Oh dear; we only owned two centre-backs and we've sold the better of them.

This is just so disappointing and bursts our feel good bubble :(
It just showss how far we have fallen as a club when a rugby playing region is able to buy our best players. Not impressed with this at all :(

Great business. Town get a massive profit,Bart gets an improved contract and Hurst gets money to spend, it may not be a cash windfall for the manager but it begins his team building.

If we end up getting £8m it's a good bit of business for an unproven, injury hit player. Webster has potential but every time I've watched him he reminds me of a slightly better version of Phil Whelan.

I am a bit schizophrenic on this.

Part of me recognises that he probably has further potential but the other part says he hasn't been as good as I expected and he does seem very injury prone.

£8m may end up looking like a good deal, who knows.

Imagine a lot of incentive clauses to be hit in order to realise that ful 8 mil

Good to see Evans displaying continued commitment to the club........

Doesn't really matter who you get in as manager, they are on a hiding to nothing under Evans. I like the sound of Hurst, but let's face it, he was employed on the basis that Evans thinks he can deliver a silk purse from a sow's ear.
