Blades Not Giving Up on Waghorn Pursuit - Report Friday, 20th Jul 2018 09:02 Sheffield United reportedly aren’t giving up on their pursuit of Blues striker Martyn Waghorn, despite manager Chris Wilder having said last night that Town’s £8-£10 million valuation has put them out of the chase.
According to the Sheffield Star, talks between the clubs are continuing with South Shields-born Waghorn said to be tempted by a move back up north.
That and Blues manager Paul Hurst admitting yesterday that he can’t guarantee that Waghorn will still be at Town on the opening day of the season are reported to have led to the Blades continuing their interest in the 28-year-old, who scored 16 times and recorded 11 assists last season.
Although Wilder cited the Blues' asking price as £8-£10 million in an interview with Sheffield Live TV last night, it’s claimed the Blades were initially given a £7.5 million valuation when making contact with Town regarding Waghorn.
The South Yorkshiremen are far from the only party interested in the former Rangers, Leicester, Sunderland and Wigan man.
TWTD previously revealed that Derby and Middlesbrough have also shown strong interest this summer, while Birmingham City have also been monitoring the situation and Nottingham Forest have been linked.
Waghorn, who joined the Blues from Ibrox for a bargain £200,000 in August last year, is contracted to Town until the summer of 2019 but with the club having the option to extend that deal for a further year.

'Giving up. aren't giving up' - it's like a soap opera, when there's anything fairly conclusive report it. It seems like anything from thoughts alone is then reported these days!

Please people let go of the £200K, we did not buy him for that!

£10m take it or leave it. The fact alone that Sheff Utd sold a kid for £12m who scored 7 goals last year means we shouldn't accept anything less. I don't think this is the same sort of situation as McGoldrick with Leicester a few years ago as he was always injured anyway. Waghorn is so important to us and I really don't think we'd be able to improve our squad with equal quality if he left.

Also, Waghorn doesn't appear to be a bad egg and would probably knuckle down and get on with it if we rejected all bids anyway. Make him stay!

8 Million and i would accept that, as much as i hate to say it were not the club we once was. I would rather us sell and buy couple of 2-3 million pound players who are destroying league 1 or in another country. 8 million is a good return for a striker who has had one good season and approaching 30 years old. Me saying this doesnt mean im not absolutely gutted if he leaves just trying to see the bigger picture.

Fans on here make me laugh! Were R:Madrid showing a lack of ambition selling Ronaldo No! We're Roma in letting Allison going to Liverpool No! Every player has a price & selling a prized asset is doing right for yr Club not lacking ambition: last few weeks of the window plenty more time for fans too get their knickers in a twist: I'll keep saying it why can't we judge Evans/Hurst 10 August & then we know what are squad is:

It's probably his agent trying to make this happen. The more a player moves the more money the agent makes.

Ok we sell Waghorn and make a decent profit... question is who would replace him I really don't understand why we thinking of selling him unless we have an adequate replacement in mind

My guess is it's 80% likely we'll sell now. Not a good move imho, but there you go....

As of now the bookies have it about right with us as relegation candidates. Alot weaker in c/d and what if Chambers gets injured again? Experienced quality signings cant come soon enough now.

We simply cannot sell him. Bring in players that can score and supply. Don't sell players that do both. Not now.

OK 7.5 million is a fair valuation BUT only worthwhile if every single penny is re-invested in the squad.

Waghorn is an excellent player However, with a mi imum of £8m in the bank, plus surplus from previous sales, Mr Hurst could do some serious wheeler dealing and build a squad in his image We have to accept this is a new era, and there will be some tough decisions However I trust the management team to get this right The times they are a changin' Our hero may not be Waggy this season, but there will be someone else!

I like Waghorn and would rather us keep players like him. However, like others have said if it gave hurst the ability to sign 2-3 quality players to bolster a pretty flimsy squad you can see why he would. The guy is not going to get funding from Evans unless he sells so how else will he be able to build a squad of his own design. If he goes and the funds from that and the Webster sale are not reinvested that is obviously very different and would be a disgrace, but i genuinely dont think Hurst would agree to it unless he could reinvest. Evans is the problem and it's been obvious for a long time he is in this venture for financial gain and we will operate on a shoestring for as long as he is at the helm. However, unlike Mick who delighted in telling us how well he worked with no funds (but then used it as excuse for garbage football and results), Hurst has his reputation on the line as a bright up and coming manager and i really hope this makes him more likely to stand up to Evans over key issues like transfers.
