Chalobah Skippers As England U19s Exit Euros
Monday, 23rd Jul 2018 18:51

Blues loanee Trevoh Chalobah skippered as England’s U19s crashed out of the European Championships following a 5-0 hammering by France in their final group game in Vaasa, Finland.

Chalobah, a member of the squad which won the competition in Georgia last summer, played the full game as he won his 23rd U19s cap, while Town striker Ben Morris was an unused sub having made his debut in the 1-1 draw with Ukraine on Friday.

England finished third in their group and now face a play-off against Norway on Thursday for a place at next summer’s U20 World Cup in Poland.

Andre Dozzell was also a key man in the side which won the Euros last summer but has remained behind this year as he continues his return from injury.

Fellow midfielders Tristan Nydam and Flynn Downes also won U19s caps last season but Town were unwilling to release the duo for the competition, preferring that they remain in Suffolk for pre-season.

Nydam and Downes were far from the only players head coach Paul Simpson was unable to call upon with a number of clubs refusing to release youngsters who would otherwise have been in the squad.

Not trying to be negative or anything I hope he proves me wrong but I've watched all three games that he is played at the championships and the last two games against Ukraine and France I thought he had a very poor game. Was playing Centre half but I'm not so sure that's the right position for him. But I'm sure he will improve under PH

That's 3 goals over the 3 games.

Agree with the following. Rather him play CDM, but can't be bad if he is captain of the under 19's and has won numerous FA youth cups for Chelsea! Hope he gets us promoted this year and we go unbeaten though!!!!

Poor tactics take their toll. He is very, very good.

It's a blessing in disguise this event was picked at the worse time of the year and let's be thankful that nobody was injured.

From what I've heard from a Chelsea fan his best position is sitting in front of a back four

Avidly watched all 3 games....he was poor in all 3 of them (especially against Ukraine and France) BUT you don't get to be captain of the U19's without substantial talent...

Hoping this was extreme poor patch and he'll come to ITFC and play well...

To be honest, in my opinion the England U19 midfield was extremely poor today, and that put all the pressure on the defence.

Anyway, at least he can come back earlier and start training with the squad.

What do you expect without the rest of the town contingent? Just missing Dozzell, Downe and Nydam is all.

He's young and I suspect that he needs to be used in midfield until he's had a bit more exposure to the rough and tumble of the championship. France were exceptional though and a lot of our outstanding players weren't allowed to go.
