Bolton Reportedly Set to Step-Up Garner Pursuit Wednesday, 1st Aug 2018 19:43 Bolton Wanderers are reportedly set to step up their pursuit of Blues striker Joe Garner, while Sheffield United are said to remain interested in much-coveted Town frontman Martyn Waghorn.
Garner, 30, has been on the Trotters’ radar for much of the summer but with Bradford’s Charlie Wyke believed to be their number one target.
However, Wyke is now on the verge of joining Sunderland and, according to the Bolton News, that will see Phil Parkinson’s club up their interest in Garner ahead of the transfer window closing next Thursday.
Garner was initially linked with Bolton in late June when it was said they were willing to pay £500,000 for his services with the former Preston man believed to be keen on a return to his native North-West.
Meanwhile, Sheffield United remain interested in Blues striker Martyn Waghorn, according to the Sheffield Star.
The Blades had a bid for Waghorn turned down a month ago with manager Chris Wilder subsequently saying Town’s valuation of last season’s 16-goal top scorer is beyond them. Nevertheless, they are still said to be keeping a watching brief.
However, Derby and Middlesbrough remain very much the frontrunners for the 28-year-old’s signature, although speaking earlier today, Rams manager Frank Lampard said his club currently have no bids in for players, although he expects more ins and outs before the deadline.
No one has yet met the Blues’ valuation for Waghorn, while Town want to get another striker signed before they would be willing to allow the South Shields-born frontman to move on.
The Blues have made a £1.5 million offer to Accrington for Kayden Jackson, who is also believed to be interesting a number of other Championship clubs including QPR also interested.

We can't sell Waghorn or Garner until deals are in place for replacements. Preferably on a permanent basis. Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if Garner is one of the players Hurst is reportedly not keen on. He's more a MM style player.

Hurst obviously is not keen on players who spend a good part of the game on their backsides!!!

If we have a 1.5m bid for the stanley man, plus the shrews 2, and tilt... Nobody can accuse ME of not backing hurst... These sales will make it happen

Is it just me or is the "training" kit as worn by MW above, far superior to the actual kit? Way more stylish. Whether we ever see MW in the actual one is another matter!

Probably not a Hurst kind of player. £500k for a 30-year-old who offers more nuisance value than goals...I'd sell.

Some pretty stupid comments on here as usual. I'd keep Garner, he is a 110pct player the kind that Hurst likes. Hard working, never gives up & gives his all for the shirt. Good in the air & got his share of goals too. Why does that make him more of an MM player than a Hurst player??

Another one we need to keep, certainly for the time being. Until this notion of signing lower league starlets is proven, we need some dogged experience in the squad to lean on [when] things get tough. We mustn't sell Garns, and we must keep Wags. I don't want us to 'survive' this season, i want us to compete for playoffs. there's no time to waste, every season it gets harder. I expect us to do well this season, and i'll 'understand' if we don't - but if we sell all the established players I expect us to struggle badly. The MM team always worked its socks off, the deadwood we have had is a lack of ability and creativity. Garns works in the Hurst mould, I don't doubt that. He's just missed pre-season is all.
