MacAnthony Reveals How Close Jackson Came to Joining Posh
Friday, 10th Aug 2018 11:32

Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has revealed just how close new Blues striker Kayden Jackson came to joining Posh earlier in the week. The 24-year-old eventually signed for the Blues for an initial fee of £1.6 million yesterday, penning a three-year deal with the club having an option for a further season.

“One of our targets was Kayden Jackson,” MacAnthony said (see below, from 3mins 20secs). “We’ve chased him relentlessly, I have anyway, since January, [Accrington chairman] Andy Holt will tell you that.

"We put bids in in January, I put bids in on 2nd May, 10th May, 20th May and we fought that one all the way through the summer.

“Last Monday, Andy finally rang me, I was in my house, and he said, ‘Right, you’ve got a deal, you’ve got permission to speak to him, it’s down to you and the agent and the player, but I’m also giving permission to other Championship clubs [understood to be the Blues and QPR]’. When I heard that I thought ‘Right here we go, other Championship clubs’.

“I even got involved, I spoke to the agent all Monday, I spent 11 hours on the deal, I spoke to the player directly and at 12.30 on Monday night the player told me he was coming, the agent told me he was coming, the boss of the agency told me he was coming. It was done, everything was agreed with Accrington and with the player.

“Tuesday morning, he was picking his gear up at Accrington, he was driving down to us for the medical. I spent four grand on a medical because it was such a substantial fee, a thorough medical.

“And the agent on Tuesday morning said, ‘Yeah, he’s picking his boots up, blah-de-blah’. But in that time in between, as can happen, Ipswich got on the phone to him, did what they did, it’s the Championship, it’s a lot more than we can offer. Worse than that he wanted to play in the Championship because he’s 24, he’s not 20, 21. And he changed his mind.

“So, that was absolutely devastating and that was tough to take because Monday night a lot of work went into that, particularly from me, and I was disappointed not to get that one over the line.

"But I was thrilled that we could reinvigorate the Ivan Toney one [from Newcastle] which we thought we’d lost during the summer.”

Cynical Smithy! I like his openess. It gives a good insight into the difficulties of player recruitment and also the costs involved. Unless you just dont believe him.

I'm sure it was to appease his fanbase, but that's fair enough in my book. He may use twitter/social media a bit much for my liking, but he has been a Chairman who has backed his club in the transfer market over many years & is clearly a fan of football who wants the best for his club.

It pleases me that Peterborough were in for him & prepared to pay a seriously large fee for a Division 1 club (& not a big established Premier League/Championship club with massive resources who have gone through a bad run & been relegated such as a Southampton, Sheffield Wednesday, Blackburn Rovers type) because they have a great reputation for finding quality players in lower league football, paying a modest enough fee, seeing thm become really successful & sought after before selling them on at a massive profit. If their scouting system has identified Kayden as the next big thing, worth chasing through 2 transfer windows and paying in excess of £1.5m for, that can only add to my confidence in Paul Hurst's decision to bring him to Ipswich.

Do you know what the guy definitely talks too much but I like how open and honest he is at the same time. If Marcus was like him a bit more I don't think we'd complain.

I absolutely can't bear this bloke. Seems to think it is desperately important that every single human being on the earth hears his opinion on everything. Spot spouting nonsensical tosh on Twitter and do your job.

I've criticised ME on his approach, or lack of it in relation to addressing the fans, but I'm glad he isn't like this. What a load of drivel, why does he feel the need to post this crap?

Some people put “negative comments” of what the Peterborough chairman has said and he has a right to say what he wants but I think what he's trying to say is that this these things happen in football behind the scenes and he doesn't actually slag off ipswich for gazumping which is actually a good thing. Hopefully Kayden will do a good job for us."

Jeez, look who was involves, the club who spent the money for a medical that did not happen, the player, an agent and an agency. All taking a cut out of the deal. Just goes to prove, we may pay 1.2 million quid for a player but how much more is added on for all of the parasites that are involved, that's football for you
