McAuley Had Agreed Terms With Town
Monday, 3rd Sep 2018 10:40

Former Blues skipper Gareth McAuley had agreed terms with the Blues last week before opting to join Scottish Premiership Rangers instead.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard confirmed after yesterday’s 1-0 Old Firm defeat to Celtic that the 38-year-old, a free agent following his release by West Brom at the end of last season, is set to join his club, probably later today.

“I hope that’s going to be the case,” he said. “There is no major rush, he’s been called up by Northern Ireland, so we won’t see him for a couple of weeks.”

The Blues held talks with McAuley towards the end of last week and had agreed terms, however, the Northern Ireland international ultimately decided to join Rangers, the club he supported as a boy and who previously showed interest in him during his time at Town.

McAuley, who also held talks with Hearts and had also been interesting Aberdeen, made 126 starts and one sub appearance for the Blues between June 2008 and May 2011.

Yesterday, Town boss Paul Hurst confirmed that Town had also held talks with former West Ham defender James Collins last week and would speak to the Welshman again in the days to come.

Good luck to him at Rangers. Pennington looks a decent player and we still have the Collins option.

Massive shame but Pennington was very impressive and still got Collins on the cards. Toto, Pennington, Chambo and Collins would be a strong set of CBs.

Personally I think Pennington looks a better bet than a 38 year old McAuley.

Pennington was getting slated on this site on Friday even before he had kicked a ball, glad his proved a good choice for PH to get in on loan.

Just spoken to a West Ham Fan, and he spoke very highly of Collins, and he said if you get him it will make your season, so let us hope that we can get him ?????

Pennington was good yesterday but is a loan and we are maxed out on loans, so Donacien misses out even though he already looks a much better option at RB than Spence. A permanent signing would have been ideal but have to accept we will be a work in progress at least until Xmas. Hope we can pick up some/enough points along the way though ! OK performances have to become good performances as agree with other posters that whilst yesterday was decent overall, there were no 9/10 performances.

Good opportunity for him, play in Europe, might have a chance at winning something up there, play in front of 40,000+ every other week.

Let's face it 6 loanees is ridiculous..thought we were never going there again?

2 weeks to sort the team out now - 6 changes yesterday is smacking of early cluelessness from Hurst.

Fresh start on the 15th,by then “hopefully” he'll have some sort of idea of his best 11 and try sticking with it for a few games.

Let's face it, who would pass up the chance to play for the team they supported as a boy, especially at the end of their career?

Good luck, Gareth!

Collins would be a colossus - GET HIM IN. Just the kind of experience we need in Defence, and we need it .. !!

No loss not getting mcauly, Pennington looks useful and if Collins comes in that's a bit more experience throughout the team maybe the new young lads will learn a thing or two.

Although nowadays " older" players can play for more years than in past times, those such as McCaulay and Collins have to wrestle with the problem of " getting their best last pay days" or playing regularly .
Rangers have a fabulous name but the opposition in Scottish Premiership, is with respect...apart from Celtic, arguably much less strenuous than in the English Championship.
MCCaulay from both points of argument has probably made the right choice.
James Collins is a " unit" BUT when Nsiala ( who has impressed) pays his ludicrous debt to the FA , and again becomes available he will then "compete" with the more than admirable and younger Pennington and the ( in my view) revitalised Luke Chambers, who would Collins replace?
And possibly the " pay packet" at the London Stadium might be greater.
nothing as yet to suggest that Mr Hurst wants to play three Central Defenders...so maybe a " dilemma" for different reasons for player and manager.
(More important is to find a "Jim Magilton" for midfield !)
We all have our views just as supporters and those for management even more important.

@clinteastwood, it's not about how many centre backs we have but getting the right ones in. NO clean sheets so far this season, and with exception of Villa we haven't played anyone any good yet, even Exeter, last season wasn't much better defensively either.
