Lambert Backs Winter Break
Thursday, 20th Dec 2018 18:34

Town boss Paul Lambert says he’s very much in favour of football taking a winter break.

The Blues manager experienced the season coming to a halt at the midway stage during his time with Borussia Dortmund, with whom he spent just over a year and won the Champions League in 1997.

This season's Winterpause in Germany runs from this weekend until fixtures begin again on 18th January.

The FA is introducing a mid-season break to England from the 2019/20 season but it won’t be implemented in the EFL.

“I’ve been asked that question about a million times,” Lambert said when quizzed on the issue. “For me, the winter break’s the best way going forward.

“It’s brilliant because it gets everybody refreshed, everybody at the club, players, even supporters, the media as well.

“It gives everybody a break from it, people can recover and can go and have time with their families. I’m fortunate enough to have experienced it so I know exactly what it’s like.”

But while teams in Germany and elsewhere won’t be in action over Christmas, the Blues have four vital games in 11 days.

Asked how much of a bearing those matches will have on Town’s Championship future, Lambert responded: “As I’ve said before, you should have asked that question in August.

"That’s when your season starts. You season doesn’t start in November, December or October, it starts in August.

“We’ve come in five months behind it but we’re slowly and surely catching up, but I don’t care what anybody says, your season starts when you start pre-season.”

Surely we had a summer and autumn break from football under Hurst, and only just getting back into it now?

I work in retail and i'm not getting a break, footballers get paid a damn sight more than I do so why should they get one?

No, No, No. Love the Christmas programme. The more games over the winter the better.

I must admit this is the first thing I have disagreed with Paul Lambert on. The Christmas programme is great for supporters I believe. Also we have enough breaks already with the ridiculous amount of meaningless international breaks. It would also mean cramming more midweek matches in unless they are thinking of overlapping into the Cricket season which I am equally opposed to.
The decision will be taken out of footballs hand anyway as sadly Sky TV run the game these days!

I'll be the one who agrees with Lambert, although I wouldn't want a winter break as long as in Germany. Two weeks would suffice.

Christmas and New Year football may be a British tradition but I'd quite happily lose the boxing day game, a fixture I rarely attend because for me it's family time. The players should have that time, too. Remember; many of the players, managers and staff live away from their families.

We will have a break in January. Then we will be hit by snow for 3 weeks meaning a log jam at the end of the season.
As our weather is so unpredictable I don't think this is realistic

There's enough bloody summer breaks and international breaks to keep the players refreshed and it's bloody boring. Just get on with it!

And if we did have a break, the teams like Chriski arsenil will go to America or asi a and play games for mega bucks there,so the players are not getting any rest.anyway
