Leicester Youngster Elder Training With View to Loan as Dawkins on Trial
Saturday, 29th Dec 2018 18:30

TWTD understands Leicester City’s Australian left-back Callum Elder has been training with the Blues with a view to joining on loan when the January transfer window opens, while free agent winger Simon Dawkins has also been with the Town squad for the last couple of weeks as he looks to win a deal.

Elder, an Australia U20 international, who joined the Foxes from Manly United based in his hometown of Sydney aged 16, will become manager Paul Lambert’s first Town signing.

The 23-year-old, who is out of contract in the summer, is yet to make a senior appearance for Leicester but has spent time on loan at Mansfield, Peterborough, Brentford, Barnsley and Wigan.

He was with the Latics for the whole of the 2017/18 campaign, in which they played in League One, making 30 starts and three sub appearances in all competitions, scoring once.

Elder’s only Championship experience came in spells with Brentford and Barnsley the previous season, a total of 11 starts for the two clubs.

When joining the Tykes, Elder, who qualifies for England and Scotland as well as Australia, described himself as “an athletic full-back. I like getting up and down the left-hand-side”.

The Blues moving for another left-back is likely to add to the speculation that Jonas Knudsen, who is out of contract in the summer and dropped to the bench for today’s game at Middlesbrough, could move on in January.

The 26-year-old Danish international is in talks with Town regarding a new contract but may be unwilling to commit himself to a new deal while the Blues look destined to drop into League One.

Town may well be willing to sell the former Esbjerg fB man now rather than allow him to depart on a free transfer in the summer.

Knudsen has previously been linked with FC Copenhagen and FC Midtjylland in his native Denmark and Fortuna Düsseldorf in Germany.

Meanwhile, we understand free agent former Derby winger Simon Dawkins, who was linked with the Blues last weekend, has been on trial with the Blues for the last fortnight.

Dawkins, 31, who left MLS side the San Jose Earthquakes in February, came through the academy at Tottenham and spent spells on loan with Leyton Orient, the Earthquakes, Aston Villa and Derby while a player at White Hart Lane.

In January 2014 the Edgeware-born left-sided wideman was sold to Derby for £500,000 without having broken into the Spurs first team.

Two years later, the 19-times-capped Jamaica international moved back to the Earthquakes in January 2016 but left this February.

Dawkins subsequently came close to joining Minnesota United and then spent time on trial with League One sides Charlton and Luton in the summer but wasn’t offered terms by either club. We understand the Blues are yet to make a decision on Dawkins.

Elder would be another inexperienced Championship player, Dawkins not offered terms in League One in the summer...we need more quality than that!

Dawkins ain't gonna help get this lot out of the poop, but these are the only type of players who would come, also why hasn't he signed for anyone else earlier!!, clearly not ain't good!As for the other fella, clearly replacing Jonas! Not sure about cashing in mind, he only cost £300 grand in the first place!😂😂

I'm not normally one to moan about potential signings before they've happened but given our predicament these 2 hardly fill me with excitement or indeed hope, however given Evans running of the club this sort of signing is all too predictable...and maybe all we can attract.

The sorts of bits-and-pieces journeymen whom we've been briefly using & then rejecting for the last few years. These are not the sort of players to keep us in the Championship. Maybe we already preparing for next season in League One, with Knudsen probably departing.

We need experience. If we sell another permanent player in Knudsen and replace with yet another loan it once again shows that Evans has learnt nothing. We need to build a squad of players. The reason we are in in this mess is because our players were sold and replaced by loans or cheap frees/alternatives.

If these two happen, we really are scraping the bottom of the barrel. Much better needed.

It's actually a mystery how Evans has made his millions. I'm sure he didn't cut corners and hire the cheapest shiit staff he could find to build his empire? Marcus - please dig out and dust off the old blueprint for success and finally start to implement it at ITFC.... please.

Some of you need a reality check! We're destined for relegation.....tell me who really wants to come here. Selling Knudsen makes sense with contract up in the summer, so at least we get some cash for him. We need that as with relegation we will be hugely down on revenue and ME likely to fit the bill for that.
Loan signings are our best hope until the summer when we clear out lots of players to get cheaper ones in as we will be LEAGUE ONE.
Suck it up guys.....the rebuild for league one promotion next year has begun.

Can any of the so called experts say who will sign for a club who are bottom of the league and favourites for relegation. Anyone with a jot of experience is not going to come here and why would Lambert sign someone with experience who would most likely be on a lot more money than those currently in the squad and may well cause wages issues.

Some fans really do live in a fantasy world. Sell Knudsen and bank the cash because the club will need every penny next season!

Miserly Evans trying to paper over the enormous cracks on the cheap AGAIN. When will the idiot ever learn.

We need proven, battle-hardened, quality reinforcements to stand any chance of avoiding the drop - which, if we're brutally honest, is probably unavoidable, even with additions.

If ME's intent on forking out on the likes of Elder and Dawkins - both of whom are nowhere near what we need - would suggest he saves his money in Jan. Recall as many of the youngsters currently out on loan and start to bed them into the first team - in preparation for next season.

Ten years of footballing mediocrity, racking up a £90M and increasing debt, wrong decision compounding wrong decision and taking our beloved club into football's third tier for the first tine in decades. A great legacy, eh Marcus?

Er..... what's the point in signing them?
Why waste the money?
Come on even 1 major input, ie, Jimmy Bullard or Jonathan Williams could galvanise a spark.
Come on the Blues!!!

Can't believe another club would want to take Knudsen and give us money for him.

We know we're down really don't we? Can't see any form of miracle is going to save us. My worry is with the type of player we are being once again connected to we will get out of Div 1 don't worry, but it won't be at the top end!

This lad has been at Leicester for a while now and in September was offered a new contract that he signed to take him thru to summer 2020. He is billed as a winger or full back, and is expected to make a breakthrough into the first team in 2019/2020 season. Mathew Pennington only had a few Championship games experience before joining us and arguably has been one of our better players this year.

I wouldn't dismiss this one too quickly, he played a major part in Wigans promotion last year and could be a useful signing. Granted that he uses up a loan place but if we sold Jonas I would consider signing Pennington on a permanent in January.
