Lambert: I Can Still Keep Town Up With Hard Work and Financial Support
Monday, 7th Jan 2019 10:41

Boss Paul Lambert insists he can still keep the Blues in the Championship with hard work and “financial support over the next few weeks” of the transfer window, despite believing he has never had to “rebuild a club or turn things around as much” as he does at Town.

The Blues' season of woe hit another low at Accrington Stanley on Saturday when they were beaten 1-0 by the League One club to exit the FA Cup at the first hurdle for the ninth successive season.

Town, bottom of the table, 10 points plus goal difference from safety, face a crucial game against fourth-bottom Rotherham United at Portman Road on Saturday at which the club are staging a ticket promotion.

“I still believe I can keep this club in the Championship,” Lambert said. “It’s going to take a lot of hard work and I need financial support over the next few weeks of the window, but it can be done.

“I came into this job with my eyes open. I knew it was going to be difficult, but it’s only when you go into the fabric of the club that you truly understand what you are dealing with.

“What has gone on here in the past is not acceptable. There has got to be a lot of changes going forwards.

“First things first, we need more bodies in as fast as possible. I have never had to rebuild a club or turn things around as much as I do here. But I know it can be done.”

The Blues have already added Hull City striker Will Keane and Leicester City left-back Callum Elder to their squad during the window.

On Saturday, Lambert said he hoped to add “a couple” of further signings early this week with Cardiff City winger Anthony Pilkington and Huddersfield forward Collin Quaner among those understood to be in talks.

He's given the players a chance and like us he's had enough. He's on our side!

Sounds like PL covering his ar5e if we go down bcos if he doesn't get financial backing and we get relegated he can say its not his fault bcos he didn't get the funds so his reputation stays intact. Its obviously a little dig at ME to get his cheque book out. I think PL will leave at end of season either way as he is probably rich enough that he doesn't have to work or needs the hassle. He would probably get a job somewhere else.

Even Mick said that the January transfer window is a difficult one to do business in. The added difficulty is that we are bottom of the league and potential targets may not fancy coming to PR. I'm sure ME & PL with their staff are doing their level best to bring players in. If we get relegated, it will cost ME even more to keep us afloat financially.

He's thrown down the gauntlet to Evans - cough up sunshine or face the consequences.

We are gonna lose one of the best attacking style play managers we have had in this club for a long time. Thanks to Evans. He won't back him. I can see it now and lambert will have enough of the s*it talk Evans gives him.

Why would any manager want to come here when you get promised a chest and all you get is a piggy bank. We are Sunderland. So much of that documentary screams Ipswich town football club. And it pains me to say it. We are doomed with Evans

Well Saturday PL finally blew his top, and quite rightly so given the performance and result. We are lucky he grew up watching the great side and aspires to not only save us but to try and get us back to the Premiership rather than treading water under MM. He is also aware of what needs to be fixed and the list is long. My concern is that if ME doesn't back him then he will walk and we will be in a third rebuilding status within a calendar year.
We need two good/experienced Central Defenders and quickly as that area hasn't really been addressed only the sale of our one decent left footed Centre Back to Bristol City. I love Chambo and all he does for us but sentiment doesn't win a relegation battle and if we go down he will have to move on anyway.
I have faith in the signing of Will Keane, long time ago we signed Steve Whitton, not a prolific goalscorer but he was a good foil for our other strikers at the time and brought the best of them. Also Alan Lee was stagnating in Cardiff City reserves after injury and what a good signing he turned out to be. Fingers crossed Will be an asset every bit as good as Lee and Whitton. Come on you Blues

PL obviously knows the history of the club, can see the facilities and remembers when Ipswich were the envy of many clubs.

I think this is about personal pride as much as anything.

Will Evans throw a few million at it now? Is it really worth it? Even with a premier league defender, midfielder and striker I wouldn't fancy us making up 10 points.
Too few games remaining and relying on those around us to have a really bad run?

Noticed that Rotherham haven't won away all season. That statistic could well change Saturday.

Apologies for the negativity, but if this was any other team apart from our own we would be saying "They're gone"

I just hope Lambert, with his obvious passion, is here next season.
Might be wiser to use that ( imaginary ) war chest then?

Refreshing , I seem to remember MM saying he is happy with what he had and saw no reason to make additions once . Hmm . Barmy

Sad indictment and lets see how ME reacts

Come on Lambo!
Let's get a few in on loan until the end of the season, and if it doesn't work out we can rebuild from scratch next season.
I believe in Lambo. 💪🏼

I like PL comments here, but feel it will fall on deaf ears, to stay up we need to win 10 of the last 20 games......to quote Keegan, i would love it if we do, but lets face facts, its a big ask, lets focus on getting the youngsters up to speed for D1 next year

Rugbytomc - ME never gave Paul Hurst anything really we made nearly 18 million in player sales in the summer and think with wages and fees spent around 5 or 6 so nice profit for Marcus.

As I've said, there is no excuses to be had from Evans and his cronies.
The money can be made available if Evans so wishes.
The clock is ticking.
Also it would appear to me, that we know ourselves the damage done by Hurst.
But what was the extent of damage carried out by MM over the years.
Apart from the obvious.

Sadly, I can't see Evans making any real funds available.

Not only will we be relegated, we'll struggle in League 1 as well.

Having PL as our manager almost makes the last 3 years of pain worth it.
Even if we go down, as long as he stays, then I can see us changing into a club we can respect again.
If he goes then we are f0cked with a rusty banjo.

All the spin dished out to us supporters since Hurst....£10m war chest....not far off being a great side etc etc....only to confirm what we already new.
The 5 point plan or recent AGM had no mention of total rebuild top to bottom.
Looks like MM caused more damage than Hurst.

I think this is about the likes of Gestede - i think that ME has probably recoiled at some of the wages of £30k and more, probably based on the fact that MM managed without those sums.

The difference is, that MM got a little lucky with the likes of Waggy, but did brilliantly on a small budget (but killed the soul of the club in the process) while Hurst sold the very gems that we needed to build on, not sell.

100% BACKING FOR PAUL LAMBERT, best manager we've had in years and years.

Playing our football and better, has a vision, understands history and understands success and what it takes to get there. We're v lucky to have him - by god we need to keep him.

We need to get 30 points from the final 20 matches to have a reasonable chance to escape the drop. That's an upper-mid-table rate of efficiency. We'd have to play like Villa, starting right away, with the lot we've got. Otherwise, even a Eureka moment from ME to bring in half of Barca would likely be too late. And that's the problem. Evans can do the math, as well.Given his history, I just don't see him going all in to keep us up.

At last. A manager who has realized the "proper blokes" can,t do it anymore. So goodbye to Knudsen/Chambers/Spence/Ward/ Sears and Skuse. Probably a couple more you can add to the bench. Now all we have to do is get the young players more battle hardened in defending and more productive going forward. Might have to move some players into different positions but what is important is a regular team. We need a real leader on the pitch organizing the man-marking and defending. We have to move the ball around faster, feed the strikers with service. More grit and creativity in the midfield. Every player should now know their job. We have capable players and now it is time to step up a few gears. There comes a time when players have to earn their place in the team. It has been too comfortable at this club for too long.

Sunderland got new owners because the outgoing owner paid of all the debt.
However Sunderland need to go up this season as they will not be able to sustain the current squad as their Premier league parachute payments will be gone.

I want to believe that we can pull off the great escape but reality keeps kicking in. I have no doubt that PL is the best man for the job but I cannot see ME providing the finances we so badly need.i just hope PL stays after relegation and put us back on track.

Paul Lambert ,nailed it . Things cant continue as they have been. Will Evans take heed ,i have my doubts, But what i DONT doubt is that if Evans dosnt wake up, shake up ,and stump up, i think Paul Lambert will say well get on with it im off ,and the club will just slide to oblivion . Its been painfully obvious what the problem is for years, but no manager has spelled it out in big letters before , the proverbial ball is well and truly in Evans court now.
