Downes Wins Cap as England U20s Defeated

Flynn Downes won his second England U20s cap as a 65th minute sub as the Young Lions were beaten 1-0 by Portugal in Penafiel.

Andre Dozzell was an unused sub for Paul Simpson’s men who as a result of the defeat finished fourth in the U20s Elite League.

Trevoh Chalobah was withdrawn from the squad having skippered in the 3-1 defeat to Poland on Thursday.

Elsewhere, Alan Judge and Jonas Knudsen were unused subs for the Republic of Ireland, who beat Georgia 1-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Dublin, and Denmark, who came from three goals behind in the final six minutes to draw 3-3 in Switzerland.

Meanwhile, academy youngster Armando Dobra won his second Albanian U19s cap as a half-time sub as his side were beaten 2-1 by North Macedonia in an away friendly in Ohrid.

The 17-year-old had made his debut in Sunday's first friendly between the sides hosted by Albania in Korça which ended 1-1.

Unused: Diangana (West Ham United), Austin (Tottenham Hotspur), Field (West Bromwich Albion), Feeney (Everton), Dozzell (Ipswich Town).

Good to hear. All this experience our youngsters are getting will give them confidence and in turn will make them better players.
